As for Sony TCs: they physically mount, but there is no autofocus and aperture doesn't report correctly. You can manual focus only. A firmware update might change this, but it might not, too. I suspect we'll have to wait for Sigma TCs to arrive, and I don't know for sure if Sony will allow that.
@stjepantomislav3634 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that feedback regarding Sony TCs. Since I'm mainly interested in stopped down landscapes with this lens, manual focus isn't a problem (a preference, actually). Did you by any chance check for the image quality across the frame with TC attached?

Hi Dustin, Happy New Year 2024! I was just going through your reviews. In the review of the DSLR version of Sigma 100-400, you compared it with Canon EF 100-400 II and had a conclusion that Sigma had a better image quality overall. And now for the mirrorless version of Sigma 100-400, the comparison shows between Sigma 100-400 DGDN and Canon EF 100-400 II that Canon is the better one. So my question is, in terms of image quality, it looks like Old Sigma >Canon > New Sigma, is that right? Looking forward to your reply, thank you very much!

With Sigma/Tamrons' increasing support of the Sony camera system it has to be tough for anyone but pro's to look at Canon/Nikon. Tamron is clearly the low price driver but Sigma has done an outstanding job targeting the infamous "90/50" goal of 90% the performance for 50% the price. The consumer is winning big now but it also pressures Sony to advance the A7iv to round out an unbeatable system.

Excellent and very informative review as always. Two things that still bug my about my Sony that keeps me from going Sony iare 1) the mounts are so variable (some so tight it is hard to get the lens on and off-not the smooth turn and click like Canon) and 2) touchscreen LCD capability is no ware near Canon. The drop is about average. Yes, the quality of focus is somewhat less, but by about an equal amount.
@bobpeticolas1214 жыл бұрын
What reviewers miss about the GMaster lens is that you can stop down to f22 with no noticeable diffraction. As a landscape shooter, that added sharp depth-of-field is the single most important feature to me.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob - what camera body are you using? You certainly can't stop down to F22 on the higher rez a7R bodies without any penalty from diffraction.
@bobpeticolas1214 жыл бұрын
Hi Dustin. I'm still shooting the a7rii so 42 MP. When I was shopping for the lens, I first noticed the difference in comparing the Canon 100-400 with the GM in the DXOMark measurements. And what I found in use after purchasing the GM was that there was no NOTICEABLE diffraction at f22. I'm sure there is measurable diffraction with fine instruments, but my images still look ultra-sharp at f22 across the zoom range. It really makes focus stacking a long lens manageable. At f8 and a long focal length, you sometimes need far over 100 images to really focus stack a long shot.
@bobpeticolas1214 жыл бұрын
But, yes, Dustin, physics dictates that there must be some diffraction at f22.

Thanks for this thorough review. Can I ask a logistical question about this lens? If this were mounted to say an A7Riii/iv, and put into apsc mode, would its reach be increased to c.150-600? And if so, how would you expect this lens to perform under such conditions? I understand that the A9 might be better matched for speed, but could the A7R be able to handle detail over such a large distance? Many thanks to anyone able to reply.

Because the crop mode just crops the image in camera, the detail is going to be the exact same as in full frame mode; the image is just cropped. This lens can handle that just fine, but you are only advantaged if you wanted the lower resolution shots already cropped as opposed to doing an individual crop in post.

Another wonderful review. Tamron seems to have diverged from Sigma in the way they are complementing Sony's range of lenses (i.e., 28-75 v 24-70) so I don't know if Tamron will compete directly with a 100-400 of their own. With your recommendation, I got the Tamron f mount version of this lens and love it. Right now, the lack of support of third party lenses for the Z system is a point against and will keep me from moving there for the foreseeable future. Sony really has taken their early start with mirrorless full frame and run with it. On a side point, I don't think you've ever looked better in one of your videos!

They've got to solve that Z-mount issue if the system is to survive. Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks for the thorough review! I just don't get why Sigma would omit proper weathersealing in this lens. I mean even the cheaper DSLR version has weathersealing... Knowing how much dust can get into an unprotected lens e.g. on a safari, it is a deal breaker for me.
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure all of your facts are correct here. The DSLR version has weather sealing at the mount, as does the DN version. Neither has advanced sealing throughout the lens, but they both have the same level.

Good review Dustin, as always, thank you! Nice that you already got the lens weeks in advance! Wanted to buy one immediately.. but then i thougth, since you got the lens way before others do, how will that impact the review? If you are too critical companies will not give you stuff to review anymore (before announcement). So how objective is the review? Another question that came to mind in cases like these were a lens copy is selected and given to a reviewer, which copy do you think they gave you? A bad copy, a random copy or a very good copy? I think i know the answer. Do not want to give you critique, since your reviews are very thorough, but it came to mind and i think i need to take these factors into account.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
Fair questions, though I guess, as always, you need to trust in my integrity. If you don't trust my integrity as a reviewer, you probably shouldn't watch my reviews. I've always been very open with both my criticism and praise, and I've never yet had a company try to get me to change my remarks. As for "cherry-picking" a lens, my experience is actually that a very early lens or prototype is actually more likely to have issues than when production is stabilized later on. I've often reviewed multiple copies of a lens at different points or bought a different copy for myself later, and I've yet to find the performance of the second copy radically different.
@martijn52074 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI fair answer! Thank you and keep up the good reviews! Do you also have the tamron 28-200 in for review? I am wondering if it sort off can compete with the tamron 28-75. I have the 28-75 and was wondering if it could be replaced with the 28-200 to trade a little bit of image quality to a much larger zoom range. The 200 seems like to have much distortion and thus resolution loss.

Thank you Dustin. I currently shoot the Sony 70-350 on my A6600 and A7R III and am very pleased with it. However, I'm not gonna lie, the extra 75mm equivalent reach and the potential for a tele converter is tempting. The almost double the weight, not so much for an arthritic old man. Decisions.
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
It is a tough decision. The fact that you have both APS-C and FF is a vote for the Sigma, as I'm assuming you're shooting the 75-350 in APS-C mode.

@@vladimirivanov6353 Actually it works just fine. It gives me an 18mp image, with a105-525mm range. Maybe not ideal, but for most of my uses, adequate. Hello, I decided to purchased the Sigma 100-400 with the help of your review. The lens is great, but I have one issue I was hoping you could help me with. I have a Sony a7riii. My subject is a statue. When I shoot continuous with OS on and all shutter speed below reciprocal rule. Only the first shot is in focus. I've tried several different shutter speeds. Happens with mechanical shutter and e-front curtain shutter. It does not happen with electronic shutter. Single shot photos are perfect. I believe there is an issue with shutter slap and the Optical stabilization in the lens. I called Sigma and was told it was my settings, but they couldn't tell me which ones. I have a Fuji XT2 and 55-200mm lens and it shoots mechanical shutter and continuous hi with OS and every picture is in focus. This is a little frustrating for me, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ted.

@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
I have not been able to get my hands on the RF 100-500 yet, so I don't know the answer to the first question. I found a little give and take with Sony's 100-400, but I preferred the Canon overall. The Sigma isn't quite as good optically, but it is close. Where it isn't close is in terms of autofocus performance, where it lags behind a fair bit.

Wondering if you see the same problem? I did lots of testing and found the problem is related to OS=enabled and using mechanical shutter together. May I ask - if you put this on an aps-c camera like a Sony A6100, will you get a 1.5x magnification (cropped) - so the FOV acts like a 150-600mm mounted on a full frame camera (with less pixel resolution) ? I have the SEL55210 55-210 and I get 55-210 since it is designed for a crop sensor
@DustinAbbottTWI4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, so you do get a 150-600mm equivalent angle of view, but your 55-210 is multiplied by the same crop factor (all lenses focal length have to be magnified by the crop factor they are attached to). Here's what you'll find on Sony's website: 35mm equivalent focal length: 82.5-315mm. This is a point misunderstood by a LOT of people; camera companies could definitely do a better job of explaining it.
