This is a short comparison of the 105mm Art vs the 85mm and 135mm as I have been trying to decide if I can replace those 2 lenses with one. I will be following up with another video after using the 105mm for a longer time on real world photoshoots.
All the photos here are with no external lights , nor edited, just done for the purpose of a clear test comparison.

Would you trade the 85mm and 135mm for the 105mm? Which one you guys prefer?

Do it. You have to adapt a little but it is worth it. The look is unique and this can cover both apllications in one lens. The only downside really is, how huge it is..

I have the 85mm and 105mm and have used both extensively in the studio and on location. The 85mm is a great all around versatile lens which gives you more room to move around in smaller spaces. The 105mm I pull out for the very special shots as I can shoot the same model same lighting position everything with the 85mm then switch to the 105mm and there's some kind of magic that happens with the 105mm I can't really explain it solely on the basis of bokeh or perspective. It is just how it renders an image that really sets it apart. I still do not know why DxOMark haven't included this in their database as it is a very special lens.

Thank you very much for the comparison. I don’t have any of these focal lengths as a prime yet (just the Sony 24-105 and the Sigma art 35 1.4). I always thought I’d need an 105 1.4 or 130 1.8 for ultimate background blur. But now that I have seen how beautiful the 85 1.4 is rendering the face, I think I’ll go with the 85. I am glad Sigma made the new, small 85 1.4. cheers from Frankfurt, Germany.

Thanks for putting all the time into the comparison. I got the sigma 105 1.4 and sony 135 1.8. After doing a proposal shoot at the beach with the 105 i kind of realized how much i was wanting an 85 but made the best of it with the 105. The 135 i could definitely not use since i didnt have much distance. It's more of a lens for when you have that distance and it can focus much closer/faster than most portrait primes out there. Also jesus its the sharpest lens i ever used, just nuts. Now i need to get an 85 but i want something smaller as the 105 1.4 is the heaviest i will carry. The 135 weight is good actually not heavy. I tried the 85 1.4 gm and loved it as well. Sigma 85 1.4 is just so friggin huge for an 85 😫
@LuisGabrielPhotography
@LuisGabrielPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed the Sigma is big BUT what you get is the sharpest 1.4 lens across the frame vs every other 85mm for Sony at least. I love my 105mm and replaced the 85mm and 135mm with it now. I also tested the 135mm GM, very sharp lens for sure although my copy of the Sigma 135mm was VERY close to it. The thing is, the bokeh of the 105mm is just something else so I do not have a use for either 135mm..just hoping for a 200mm from Sigma 2.0 LOL Maybe you can do what I am planning to do..get the cheap 85mm 1.8 from Sony since its small in case I ever need something shorter than my 105mm but longer than 35mm. Also it gives me 20fps with the A9 if I ever need that. Thank you for your kind words! :)

It's so interesting how different people's experiences are.. I bought the Sigma 105mm 1.4 and the pictures were definitely of high quality, but i missed the 'Magic' that i known of the Canon 85mm 1.2. That emotional Film look. I expected so much, because of all the extreme good reviews, but it just didn't blow me away, just no Magic to me. After years i gave the Sigma 85mm 1.4 HSM Art a try, and it was pure Magic!! next to my Canon 85mm 1.2 L ii. To me the 105mm 1.4 has this look like cutting out a person and sticking it on a background while crafting. although with the 85 the person is in the middle of the bokeh rendering which gives it a certain realistic 3d look. It could be really possible its just because i like the 85mm focal length more..
@LuisGabrielPhotography
@LuisGabrielPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed we are very different because I tried the 1.2 L ii before and was not impressed at all with it. Never felt the 105mm has a cardboard cutout look either. The RF 85mm 1.2 though that one I like a lot more than the EF version and in some cases I may like it better than the 105mm too. But I am hoping for a mythical 135mm 1.4 :D Thank you :)

@Luis Im on the market for an 85mm. Sigma lens is good but too heavy for my liking so I'm choosing between Samyang 85 1.4 AF and Sony 85mm 1.8. Between those two, which one would you shoot for on location portrait s?
@LuisGabrielPhotography
@LuisGabrielPhotography 4 жыл бұрын
Hello. So I prefer the bokeh rendering of the Samyang vs the Sony 1.8 but the Sony has faster AF and more importantly, is more accurate than the Samyang at least based on the firmware I tested when I did my comparison video with the Samyang, GM and Sigma. Another option could be the Viltrox which I am currently testing and seems to have very accurate AF for photos so far but of course, Viltrox is not as known as Samyang nor Sony so, if you want to play it safe, you may want to go Sony. I tried getting another copy of the Samyang but while Samyang of Japan was very quick to respond, the USA team never replied back after several tries so I gave up. Thank you!

The only time I would ever consider leaving the 105 1.4 is if there was ever a DG DN version from Sigma. I'm conflicted at times about the weight of the lens, but every time I use it, it just produces the most sublime images across the frame (even at 1.4). The 105 1.4 is just fabulous.

Thank you for a very nice and thorough review, I love how you explained everything in detail! I own a Nikon 135 f/2 DC lens and although I prefer the vintage look sometimes when shooting with it, I really would like to try the Sigma 135 and get more crisp, sharper images paired with my D800 and lose the chromatic abberations which sometimes are annoying. I did not know which one to pick between the 105 f/1.4 art and the 135 f/1.8 art (better low light/creamy bokeh vs better compression/sharper images), but I think I will go with the 135!

Thank you so much for the kind words! I just got another copy of the 105mm as i want to try it more time as my one lens solution with a lot more comparisons keeping the subject the same size and also AF comparisons with moving subjects so a 2nd video is coming up for this but I don't think you can go wrong with the sigma 135mm 1.8, it's awesome!
@steelxl4ever
@steelxl4ever 4 жыл бұрын
You' welcone, I am looking forward to seeing your second comparison in this case 😁 The two factors that made me decide to stay on the 135 are the compression and the fact that I have no problem whatsoever with being farther from the subject when shooting portraits (provided I have space). Another indirect factor would be the weight of course, that 105 is really heavy after a days work. When I need to be closer to my model I use a Tamron 85 1.8 lens, it is the only portrait lens so far with optical stabilization for the Nikon system and I love it.

I own 85GM, 135GM, 105/1.4 and the subject isolation is the best on 135, the biggest sharpness to the edge + lowest CA on portrait distance is on 105 and the most circular bokeh (of point light sources - especially seen at nigh scenes) produce 85. Thus I pick the lens depending on needed working distance and the background distance - if the background ~ model distance can not be changed but my position can be changed => 135. If I can control all the environment / positions I pick 105 - better working distance than 135 and 2/3 EV advantage is handy in the lower light available situations like a sunset or night/indoor shooting.

@@LuisGabrielPhotography I use the 70-200 2.8 for that. Bokeh is sufficient and the compression is similar to a 200mm prime. The sharpness and colours are also pleasing. In addition you get a much greater versatility with that lens and a 200mm 2.0 or 2.8 from Sigma will cost almost the same, will have the same weight and is still not existing ;)

If I would say the huge size of the Sigma 105mm doesn't matter, would you prefer the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM or this lens to shoot with the A7iii? I am staying infront of a hard decision. Both lenses have their pros and cons in my opinion, but I really like the focal length of 105mm.
@LuisGabrielPhotography

To give you a little bit of history..I had the 85mm GM for 2 years, then moved to the 85mm 1.4 Art..and now use the 105mm 1.4 for almost all my portrait work. It replaced both the 85mm and the 135mm 1.8 as my main portrait lens. The extra smooth bokeh and subject isolation/3d Pop of this focal range and lens is amazing. Also it is sharper than the 85mm GM wide open in the center and even more away from the center. So if you don't mind the size, like I do not mind it now, then that would be my choice. :)

I personally ended up with the 105mm and sold all 85 and 135. I found the bokeh of the 105mm smoother than the 85mm 1.4s and the 135mm GM and Sigma BUT of course, it is a big lens that not everyone may want to carry. Before moving to 105mm I was shooting both 85mm 1.4 and 135mm 1.8. If I had to choose between the 85mm 1.4 and 135mm 1.8 only, I would probably go with the 85mm as I will have more flexibility in terms of space needed to shoot but of course, the compression won't be as much as the 135mm and also for tight headshots, I prefer to shoot at least 100mm for most people. In the end, all those factors are why I went with the 105mm. My new video with the Canon vs Sony, has the 135 GM and the 105mm 1.4 there with better comparisons I think, than the one on this video :)

@@kendrickcontent I have been trying to get my hands on it but from what I have seen bokeh is similar to the previous version or maybe the previous is a tiny bit smoother so nothing would change in my recommendation in terms of getting the smoothest bokeh, great sharpness and more compression than 85mm (but less than 135rmm of course), the 105mm is still king for my portrait work. I actually do event work many times with the 35mm 1.2 on one side and the 105mm on the other! Big combo but the results just make me smile :)

Hello Sara. The 105mm 1.4 it can feel heavy if you are going to be shooting it for a long time. I workout and still can feel it so while I don't know you personally, I know my wife would never use the 105mm. I use it for weddings and so on but I am used to it so I am kind of a bad reference point.. A fast 85mm like the new or even the old Sigma would be smaller (specially the new one) allow you to be closer for family shots and still give you nice bokeh. Won't be as smooth and as 3d pop as with the 105mm but won't be as big or heavy either :) Also for family photos you will likely be stopping down to keep everyones eyes in focus, unless you very carefully place them within the thin focus plane.

Hello. Well unfortunately that is one of those questions that is hard to answer. The 105mm 1.4 will give you smoother bokeh, more "3D pop" and "compression" all which are the reasons I prefer it over any 85mm and 135mm in the market (aside from the RF 85mm1.2 which is overall as good for me). So for MY style, I would get the 105mm but it depends on your specific needs. :)

Great job on your review. I think for outdoor, the 135mm has the best background compression performance and gives the portrait a more flattering look. The 85mm and 105mm to be honest is probably better suited for indoor studio portraits against back-drop where you can work closer to the model. Not to say that, the 85mm and 105mm wouldn't be great outdoors as well; they are! I just feel that the 135mm is a better all around portrait lens outdoors because you have the space and can choose more distant background elements to incorporate bokeh. The 105mm F1.4 just doesn't wow me as much better or different from the 135mm F1.8 or the 85mm F1.4. Plus the added compression of the 135mm F1.8 due to the longer focal length will always have smooth buttery bokeh even if shot slightly stopped down at F2.8. Perhaps, the 85mm F1.4 is also a keeper as well because it performs very well at indoor scenarios in low light and tighter spaces as well as outdoors. Whereas the 105mm F1.4 is very close and not that far off from the 85mm F1.4, producing almost identical results. So keeping the sigma 85mm F1.4 and Sony 135mm F1.8 GM gives you the perfect lens gap that will produce amazing but unique results. If you do consider the sigma 105mm, or something in the 100mm range, I would suggest adding a 100mm F2.8 macro or the Sony GM 100mm F2.8 STF OSS with macro mode to add variety to your kit. Otherwise, why not just wait until Sony releases the 85mm F1.2 GM (don't quote me on this) within the next few months. The bokeh for this new lens would be comparable in bokeh to the 135mmF1.8, and just as versatile as the older 85mmF1.4. This (85mmF1.2) would be the lens that I would trade-in my 85mm F1.4 and 135mm F1.8 for. This new lens by Sony would offer something unique that the latter does not have. Just my 2 cent. Thanks again for the wonderful and inspiring videos, cheers!!!!!

It goes to show how different we all are. For me, when you keep the subject the same size, the 105mm 1.4 has the smoothest bokeh with more blur. If you check my other video which was better made, comparing the Canon 85mm 1.2 with R5, the A7R IV with the 105mm and 135mm 1.8 GM, you can see the differences in 3Dish pop of the 105mm vs the 135mm. The Sigma is my choice these days as favorite all time portrait lens after that 2nd test. I just love that look that it achieves vs anything else I have tested aside from a 200mm F2 (that is my other lens I would love to add to my tools). I had the 100mm STF and while it has a very unique look, at full lenght it is not fast enough to give me the amount of blur I like. I may grab the 135mm STF instead one day. After comparing the Canon RF 85mm 1.2 to the Sigma 105mm 1.4, I dont feel I would go with an 85mm over the 105mm. I just prefer the extra compression over the 85mm while having more blur and smoother bokeh than the 135mm 1.8 options. Of course, those are just my opinions and your views are just as valid. :) In the end we all ned to find the gear that clicks with us. Thanks so much for the kind words!!

@@LuisGabrielPhotography Honestly, Sony is relatively new in the lens development market since acquiring Minolta. Which is good because they push the newer camera technologies, that puts a lot of pressure on other manufacturers. But when it comes to lenses, Sony has not done that bad at all and has offered competitive gear, especially with their GM and Zeiss offerings. It seems now Sony is ready to step up to the plate and offer the 100mm F1.4 (which I think is releasing soon) and the 85mm F1.2; (which is rumored to be released in a couple of years) I watched your other video and gain great insight. Now I understand why the sigma 105mm F1.4 is favorable. And from also looking at the specs, I speculate that the reason might be clear from physics. When you look at the lens from a technical and physical aspect, it's clear who the winner is; it may be the Sigma 105mm!!!! The sigma just simply has the largest front lens elements out of both the 85mm and the 135mm. And is surprisingly heavier that the 70-200mm F2.8GM. By having a larger front lens element, more light has to be squeezed down to the sensor. This causes it to diffract more light in the out of focus regions. Which is why flare performance is poor but bokeh performance is king..But it does this at the cost of having many corrective lens groups and elements, which in -turn adds weight and size; however, in my opinion, it may render more beautiful bokeh that the 135mm GM as a result. I respect Sigma for doing this because often photographers in general tend to want what works for their style. So if the lens is a little heavy, we can generally live with that if we are happy with the results until the weight and size outweighs practicality. It is also interesting that the Canon 85mm offered fairly good performance and the reason became suddenly clear after looking at the specs. From your video, the reviewed Canon 85mm DS model has a De-focused smoothing lens element that renders that smooth out-of-focus transitions in the background and foreground; Hence, rendering a gaussian blur effect with smoother, circular bokeh balls. The rendering of the Canon 85mm DS lens reminds me of Sony 100mm F2.8 GM STF and the older Sony 135mm F2.8 STF manual focus A-mount lens. Surprisingly, I prefer the rendering of the Canon 85mm F1.2 DS lens; however, only at closer focusing distances. For instance, I would prefer to use the 85mm DS only for headshots or tight 3/4 poses because the gaussian background blur effect drops off rapidly as you move farther away from the subject. Which means I'd switch back to the 105mmF1.4 for the full body portraits to preserve the more traditional effect. So it makes perfect since to just stick with the Sigma 105mm for almost everything in portraits. Although I have not tried the Canon 85mmF1.4 DS or the Sigma 105mmF1.4 myself, many thanks for helping me realize that the Sigma 105mm is a great and unique lens. Now, I want to wait for the Sony 100mm F1.4GM release to see if they will make something as daring as the Sigma 105mm F1.4. Hopefully Sony makes the filter thread size of the new 100mm F1.4 larger than the one found on the Sigma 105mmF1.4 .... lol.... Great videos...Thanks again... Cheers!!!!!
@LuisGabrielPhotography
@LuisGabrielPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
You got a point for sure. The size of the 105mm which for some is a con is also what gives its awesome performance. I have to admit, I am a sucker for big lenses. It always makes me feel like less compromises were taken. I agree about the DS and stf in general, when you move farther from the subjects the effect diminishes but under the right setup those lenses surely give a unique look. That is on fact where I'm a bit stuck right now choosing between swapping the A7R IV for the Canon R5...or adding two lenses that give me very unique looks... the 9mm 5.6 and the 135mm STF.

@@insidefeelings9434 Well I had all those before so lets see if I can help. The Sigma for portrait work has very good and accurate AF at least with the A7R 3, 4 and A9 that I tested it with. Bokeh is a big smoother than the Sony 135mm GM but the Sony is sharper away from the center. I love my 105mm 1.4 ARt as it has the smoothest bokeh of all but since you have an 85mm already, maybe it will be best to get a 135mm to have a bigger gap between the two lenses plus 135mm will give you a very different compression and "facial features" perspective vs 85mm when standing at the same distance from the subject.
