In my opinion it is a deal breaker when a lens has no filter thread. When you want to film outside you are screwed and when doing landscape photography you will also need a filter at some point
@JoshCameron2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I sort of agree with you on this one. Of course there's work arounds for this particular lens, but generally speaking I like to be able to slap a filter on the front without any questions!

You can get an ND kit that fits ND in the rear side of the lens, it's really very simple.
@the_black_douglas90412 жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing this comparison Josh. I’ve been waiting for someone to do it! I use the Sigma 14-24 on the S5 extensively on a DJI RS2. I do own the Haida rear ND filters but never used them on a job. With wide angle you want deep focus, not shallow, so you can see all that amazing width compression packed into the background ? I’ve never found an environment where I couldn’t control exposure by just stopping down and reducing ISO. If I want shallow DOF i’ll go 70mm+. The focal range on the 16-35 is pretty attractive but I really love the je ne sais quoi Sigma optical quality.
@JoshCameron2 жыл бұрын
I guess the only reason you'd go to a shallow DOF is simply for vlogging or when there's literally no light present in the scene. But I do agree that I prefer to use a deeper focus when shooting ultra wide :D
@fabian_992 жыл бұрын
did the sigma lens work well with the S5in terms of auto focus ? or how would you decribe its strenghts and weaknesses in this combo?
@the_black_douglas90412 жыл бұрын
@@fabian_99 I haven’t tried it in auto focus and I wouldn’t rely on auto focus with any Lumix camera. For use on the gimbal, having the zoom range allowed me to compromise field of view/ lateral compression/ barrel distortion to suit different situations without messing around keeping the client waiting changing primes and rebalancing the gimbal. Also you can get an exact focal length in the range when sometimes with primes you want something between what you have. The extra stop of light on this lens as opposed to the Lumix allows me confidently to kill fluoro lights that will cause flicker and push the ISO to get enough exposure with minimal noise. Any other noise I clean up in post with the Neat Video plug in. I rate the Sigma. It’s a beast. But i only use it manual focus.

Nice review Josh! Yea, I have that Haida kit as well for my 14-24. I really like having the filters in the back. Only slight drawback I've noticed is I find them a bit tricky to carefully remove without touching them to leave fingerprints the first times switching them out. I think I got a method of tilt down, but in a hurry switching them out, I've touched the filter or even dropped them. Not perfect, but I think I like it better for wider lenses as when I used front filters on my Canon 16-35, they would vignette a bit, depending on the screw on filter size.
@georgehudetz12332 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've used the Haidas on my 14-24 as well. They do work well, but a little fidgety. On my 16-35, I'm currently experimenting with Freewell magnetic NDs. Super fast and convenient, and seem to have very little color cast and are very sharp/contrasty. However, while one filter produces no vignetting at 16mm, two will create some, requiring me to shoot at 17mm.

I’m a real estate shooter and this was a great review Josh. For gimbal work, the sigma is tough to balance with the s5. If you like low or underslung shots, good luck. That said, I just shot a real estate video where I needed f2.8 at iso 8000. The 16-35 is tempting weight wise but I’d rather have the wide aperture options vs the lighter weight and longer focal length.
@the_black_douglas90412 жыл бұрын
Depends on the gimbal maybe? I use the Sigma 14-24/S5 lots on a DJI RS2 and it balances easily.
@EricBlair-jg2ux2 жыл бұрын
If your gimbal struggles to balance that setup then let me introduce you to a simple concept........magnetic counter weights. Thank me later.

Despite being a 2-year old video, it’s still incredibly useful. I was looking at the 16-35 for my s5iix so I can keep my 14-24 for my S1H and my 24-70 for my other S1H so I can have a vlogging camera and two run and gun cameras haha

I was trying a dificult shot with sunny sky behind tree leaves and the sigma 14-24mm got to much cromatic aberrations. It work fine interiors but outside without filters was worst than the lumix 20-60mm so I think using it for interiors and fast works. Finally I made that complex picture with the lumix 24-70mm pro I take 4 photos and merge in photoshop. Better even than the high resolution 96 mpx mode of my lumix s5II. Lumix lenses still getting better quality in dificult light sotuations. I hope they made a 12-28 f2.8 pro in the future to change this sigma.
@anthonystevepropertyvideop24162 жыл бұрын
my sigma 14-24 came with filters that you put on inside the lenses rear glass element which isn't ideal but works fine. I find with the widest end the edges of the images aren't always in focus and a little soft but it's my workhorse and happy with the extra 2mm. Good video

@TB-up4xi2 жыл бұрын
Seemingly.... and personally I think I might prefer the Sigma (with a caveat)....but the Panasonic lens is 300g lighter, physically smaller, has a wider focal range and has better native autofocus (particularly for video if you're into that) and uses standard filters. If these attributes are more important to you than the f/stop gain then maybe there is a case for the Panasonic. There is the issue with the bulbous front element which is a turn off on the Sigma, for me anyway that front element makes the Sigma much less desirable.

16-28 would be worse for corner wobble I'd say. 16-35 does a great job
@rodmehta53562 жыл бұрын
I could never make up my mind between these two. Anyway, instead I had to spend $5000 on my work van. That solved the lens problem. I would predict that Sigma will overhaul their two ultrawide lenses soon and design something like the Laowa 15mm f2 (which is rather unsharp, I am being told by astro photographers). Thanks!
@rodmehta53562 жыл бұрын
PS: I adapted a Canon EFS 11-18 and at about 14mm I get reasonable results for B&W situations such as promotional photography with the S5.
@dannykrzewski28852 жыл бұрын
The laowa 15mm f2 is very sharp if focused right and/or stopped down, although I never used the 2 zoomlenses for comparison. But what I can say for sure is that the sunstars the laowa produces are so much nicer than those of the zoomlenses (10 point vs 22 point). That and the extra stop of light kept me with the laowa lense although sometimes I wish I had a more versatile zoom lense
@rodmehta53562 жыл бұрын
@@dannykrzewski2885 Thanks for the heads up. I think there might be huge quality differences at Laowa. I have seen some pretty unusable focus at f2. If I didn't want one with a fast aperture, I would just bite the bullet and get the Lumix 16-35. I would try a Laowa in the shop, but my nearest photo shop is a 1000km round trip away. Something to put on the back burner 👍 Cheers!

Another "dark-horse" option is the Sigma 12-24 F4 in EF mount. The Sigma MC-21 allows the use if drop-in filters (search on Aurora-Aperture) so that you can avoid the monster square filters. Of course, no AF-C, and it's a beast. But if 14mm isn't wide enough, it's worth considering.
