Christopher, the edge issues that you are experiencing on the Sony is due to the differences in the sensor stack thickness between the different cameras. The thickness of the glass in front of the sensor is optically significant, and lenses designed for a particular mount are designed such that they give optimal performance with a particular range of thicknesses. Once you stray outside that range, you can see sub-optimal behaviors, especially in wide lenses and in fast lenses (and doubly so in wide, fast lenses). This can range from under/overcorrection of spherical aberration, astigmatism, comatic aberration, or as it seems in the case of the Sigma 14mm, field curvature.

This is a plausible explanation. Another explanation could be the design of micro lenses on the sensor glass, which are designed to divert angled light from the lens down into each pixel of the sensor. Since Sony has a shorter flange distance than Canon and Nikon, the micro lenses are designed to divert different angles than the ones that are coming from a lens designed for a longer flange distance.

I do love the Sigma Art Lenses. My 35mm f1.4 gets used a lot. My only experience with 14mm lenses was the Canon EF 14mm f2.8 II. I was so disappointed with the image quality that I sent it back. The lens was very unsharp at the corners and had severe chromatic aberration on the left hand side of the image. It went back to Canon for testing and they said it was normal performance for that model! This Sigma looks a lot better. The lack of filter fittings would be a deal breaker though. Whilst I do not use filters a lot, I do use NDs & grads on wide angle landscapes. I am surprised there is no rear filter holder. The Sigma 15mm f2.8 Fisheye had a rear filter slot. After I got rid of my Canon 14mm I bought one of the first Irix 15mm f2.4 Blackstone lenses when they first came on the market. This lens is not auto focus but is extremely sharp right across the frame and takes both front & rear filters although the 92mm front thread means filter prices can be eye-watering. Keep up the good work!

I've been trying (and failing) to find an explanation for the focusing anomaly you experienced with the A7RII, putting it down to field curvature - exaggerated by the very short distance from sensor to test chart with such an ultra-wide-angle lens - and to the higher resolving power of the 42MP sensor or perhaps to some slight inaccuracy in the adapter's construction. Out of interest, were you using a Metabones, an MC-11, Commlite or another adapter? I'm sure you were only focusing manually, with OSS switched off... By the way, if you plan to test more Sigma lenses then it might be worth investing in a £39 Sigma Dock. I was hoping that Roger Cicala's review (www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/07/sharpness-tests-of-the-sigma-14mm-f1-8-dg-hsm-art/) might throw some light on this but he only briefly mentions field curvature. You may be also interested to know that Lens Rentals (in the USA) appears to be offering the Sony E mount version for hire soon - in a couple of day's time if you take their hire page literally! www.lensrentals.com/rent/sigma-14mm-f1.8-dg-hsm-art-for-sony-e

If the blurry corners were due to an adapter, it would seem like not all 4 corners would be off in the way. I think that's why he stressed "all four" because if the lens was tilted at an angle the blurring wouldn't be evenly in all four corners. I wish he would've tested if the corners were also blurry at longer distances. It kinda seemed like he found a happy medium where the center and the corners were decently sharp... This video has had me trying to research field curvature for a couple hours and I'm just getting a mixed bag of results. If you know of any good articles beyond what you already listed, let us know!

Excellent review as always. I can't wait to see what gurus of astrophotography have to show us and how they can capture milky way with this. Yet at this price, despite all the merits, I don't have this lens in my wish list as first of all, my Samyang / Rokinon 14mm 2.8 is more that what I can dream about (I have three copies of this lens). Then, and if I was in market for wide / ultra wide, fast lens, my first choice probably would be this but at 1/4 the price, with only 10 percent or less, lose in quality, my choice would be Venus optical Laowa 15mm F/4 and not F/2 that you mentioned at 10:46 minute. Anyways excellent job and thanks for your great work in this review. You are a priceless source of truly unbiased information with right projection of scientific data (That really matters to user), at best. A very unique and rarity on KZbin.

Hi Chris! How are the Sigmas behaving with the R5-C? I have the tamron 15-30 which I will be returning , as the AF and stabilization won't work in Video mode, and I only discovered about this after seeing it doesn't work and googling the issue.. quite a few complain in forums but Tamron says 'it doesn't test it's lenses with EOS cinema cameras' as the weird excuse to why it doesn't fix this.

Great review. I'm considering picking one of these up for architectural video with my RED Dragon-X 6k, which has a sensor with an approximate 1.25x crop (from 35mm) in 6K, making this ~18mm. I'm wondering about the barrel distortion, and if you have tried to correct it using premier's built in barrel distortion tool?
@claudeganter3911
@claudeganter3911 6 жыл бұрын
Thank about your reviews. Much appreciated. About the curvature of field on Sony camera: While super wide angle lenses have huge depth of field on the subject side, the image plane on the sensor size is actually razor thin. Also if the lens is not a telecentric design, like it seems to be the case here, then rays arrive with an angle of incidence at corners. The optical path will then vary as a function of angle of incidence and glass thickness (stack) in front of sensor hence curving the image plane field. See for Brian Caldwell and Roger Cicala articles. I would suggest to test the lens on a Canon 5DS R which is probably closer to the intended design of the lens.
@jefffenske1958
@jefffenske1958 6 жыл бұрын
So how do you explain this in practical terms?
@claudeganter3911
@claudeganter3911 6 жыл бұрын
Well that was the simplest explanation I could figure out. Just kidding. Anyway, what that means is that when you "adapt" a lens on a Sony A7x camera - especially if it is a super-wide and even more so if it has a large aperture - you may get field curvature blurring the corners. The adapted lens and the camera stack are one unique optical system. To mitigate the problem, there is a company that sells 'thin' stack modification for Sony cameras. Just google 'kolari mod'. But it seems expensive and no warranty that it works perfectly for this case.

thank you Chris. I have Nikon D3400 and I want to get a sharp and wide angle lens. my budget is $500 max. the only good value for money lens I found was Samyang 14mm f/2.8. Do you have any other suggestions to get a sharp wide angle lens? I am willing to take landscape and street photos. Best

Take a look at my video about wide angle lenses for APS-C cameras, and bear in mind that Canon lenses don't work on Nikon

The Sony version has built-in adaptor? So it's not a native Sony lens? I thought those lenses were gonna be native :(
@shaolin95

Wazer Benal if it gives you all features of a naive lens then I consider it native. Sure would be nice to have them specifically made to Sony but they claim its better than adapting that lens... We shall see

Thanks Christopher. 14mm AF lens for Canon EF mount, but budget options. I have a 90D and do landscape. Which one of the following 3 lenses you think is better for the price. * Yongnuo YN 14mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon EF, $552 www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1383150-REG/yongnuo_yn14mmf2_8c_14mm_f_2_8_autofocus_lens.html * Rokinon AF 14mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon EF, $529 www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1383660-REG/rokinon_io14af_c_af_14mm_f_2_8_lens.html * Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon EF, $549 www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1438341-REG/samyang_syio14af_c_af_14mm_f_2_8_full.html But I have manual lenses as well (90D, tripod & focus peaking =>> is ok). www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/SLR-Camera-Lenses/ci/274/N/4288584247?sort=PRICE_LOW_TO_HIGH&filters=fct_fixed-focal-lengths_2207%3A14mm%2Cfct_lens-mount_3442%3Acanon-ef%2Cfct_zooms-primes_5903%3Aprime-lenses Thanks

Adaptors always cause issues especially from one make to another. Many of your videos where you adapted to your apsc canon many had issues with the adaptor which you wouldn't have seen on a apsc without an adaptor.

for the price point, i think the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 distortion free lens is superior.

Every time you use a converter or adapter you are introducing a chance of an error that was not originally taken in to account by the manufacture because the product was simply not intended for this use. Later trowing the product and manufacture under the buss buy testing it with adapters on camera that was intended for really shows nothing about the product it only shows that the user is ignoring the manufacture instruction and then is complaining about the final result. It is like buying shoes 2 size bigger filling them up with different insoles to compensate for the size differences and then complaining that the shoes are really not comfortable .

now that Sony has a 14mm f1.8 (and Sigma has a 14mm f1.4), a comparison is in order. I can live with vingetting as long as it is even and symetrical. I can only accept so much coma.

It is really weird. I have seen the same problems with Canons 16-35 mm lenses. Somehow the corners get blurry although the adapter does not contain any glass. I think the effect is way to strong and it can't be a lens problem. This also would have rendered this lenses useless on a 50 megapixel 5Ds. It was one of the reasons for me picking up Fuji cameras rather than Sony since I do not have to think about adapter problems.
