Jeff, great video. I hope you remember that when I upgraded from a very ‘old’ MK11n Canon to my R-7, ( mostly because of your review) I had gotten involved with a friend of mine that was running a Nitro Burning Front engine dragster, and I was the ‘media’ guy. ( lots of fun,hay) I found this review very interesting and relevant, because of a friend of mine use to be a ‘high end’ wedding photographer. ( he is not doing that anymore) . At a resent car club event he brought out his Canon camera and a 60-600 Sigma lens. He had it mounted on some fancy gimbal mounted tripod. He told me this would be a super setup for the night time events to get the flames from the nitro dragsters. Well I really wasn’t interested in spending that kind of money. But I never even looked at the 150-600. I wish you were still taking images at the drag strip. I would like to see how it works there. As always good content, keep it up.

I bought the Sigma sport model with a 7D body used, talk about heavy the lens scales at over 6lbs. and on the body almost 8lbs. I have used the lens on my new Canon RP body talk about sharp. my lens tests are taking photos of the very top of cell phone towers. When you can count the strands of each wire sticking out at 600mm that is good. The plus was an Osprey on the nest on top of one. Heavy Bogen tripod.

A friend of mine has the Sport version, she got it used for $1,300 i've used hers and yes, it's a workout using it but the Payoff, My god so Sharp. Thats the reason i ended up getting the Contemporary, and even though the AF is a bit slower, and made of more plastic, It's pretty much the same as the sport. I love this lens, So sharp. Good job on getting that Osprey.
@rayspencer5025Ай бұрын
I have the EF mount Sport version, and it is great. You don't lose a stop of light due to crop. If you use it with the standard adapter you get a maximum equivalent focal length of 960mm f6.3. If I use my SpeedBooster I get about the equivalent of a 660mm f5 (plus there is a teeny tiny bit of apparent image quality improvement.). Now my version is damn heavy, I'll have to admit. That is why I have kept my old Tamron G1 150-600mm, it is much lighter (~30% lighter) and still not a bad lens at all.

I currently use the sigma 150-600mm (c) on a xanon rebel t6. Thinking about upgrading to a 90d, but with everything going mirorless would i just need a ef-rf adapter to shoot my current sigma on something like an r7? And would that be worth the upgrade?

I’m looking to buy an R7 soon and planning to use my 150-600C on it. I’ve gotten really mixed signals about if it’s a good setup or not. Mainly the focus pulsing in Duade Paton’s video. This has reassured me that this is a good setup and is worth having. I was actually planning on getting a 90D before watching because of the similarities between the cameras. Going mirrorless will surely be a better idea.

Don't rush to get a filter. I had the correct circular polariser filter for that lens, and on my 7DMkII all was going well. As soon as I paired it up to my new R7, all focus at long range was lost. Gone! Puffo! Take the filter off again, and focusing ability was restored. I now just use a bare naked lens, no polariser filter (that option now restored with a drop-in filter in my EF/RF adaptor 🙂 ) no skylight filter, no UV filter, nothing. Just the hood.

I recently purchased an R7. I intended on using it with my Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 Sports. The R7 refuses to connect with the Sigma lens. Very disappointing. Both camera and lens have current firmware. The Sigma lens works just fine with both of my R6's and my M50. The R7 works just fine with other Sigma lenses I own. I also tried using both canon ef/rf adapters and 3rd party adaptors. It's incredibly disappointing that the entire reason I purchased the R7 is now useless to me. When getting on Canon usa websites forum and bringing up that exact problem, I discovered a few things. 1. Nothing much I can do about it. 2. I might get to speak with a Canon rep who might or might not help me find a solution. (I haven't had an opportunity to try that). 3. Folks on Canon usa websites forums are far more interested in semantics and being more correct than the other guys, than actually helping you with solving your issues. 😃

Ah man that sucks that this is happening to you. I cant think of anything on why the lens won't connect with the camera. Especially since it works on other R mount cameras. It's probably just one of those freak things. I have the 120-400,, sigma, and although it does work on the R7, the two don't play nice. I miss focus more with that combination than i hit, but when paired on my EOS-R it works great. I wish i could give you an answer to help you, but unfortunatley i have no clue, at this point.

I am having some experience with cameras, but nver hold r7 or sigma 150-600 specifically. But I am thinking that indeed 2 kg is sigma is pretty heavy, especially in combination with 650 gram r7 - if you compare it say to r50 which is twice lighter body and 100-400 which is just 635 gram. 2.5 kg vs 1 kg, although you get 600/400*sqrt(32/24)=1.75 more magnification and (8/6.3)^2=1.6 more light at farthest distance. Fair value per kg, but for me 1.5 kg is somewhat a limit for my style

Lovely video, but you do not lose a stop of light. An f/5 lens mounted on the EOS-R is still an f/5 lens, and still requires the same shutter speed and ISO when mounted on an R7. In fact, if you want to use a Metabones speedbooster on that setup, you'd gain a stop of light (but not blur) and still get the 150-600 reach as if you were on the EOS-R. I do this regularly with my EF 24-105 f/4L - on a speedbooster on the R7, it's a 17-75 f/2.8, albeit with f/4 blur. If you want to say "the noise performance of the R7 is about 1 stop worse than the EOS-R" then I will agree completely. Those are the 2 cameras I use daily, and I love 'em both! I would love to have that Sigma lens. I ended up with the Tamron version, due to budget constraints, for the few times a year that I use it - and I think it's "good enough" though I doubt it quite matches the Sigma.
@JeffGresham2 ай бұрын
@@selkiemaine when i say 1 stop of light i mean the equivelant of 1 stop when it comes to depth of field/background blur. I have a meike speedbooster that i use mainly to shoot youtube videos on my r7, but have played around with it for photo, and it really makes a difference. Ive used the Tamron version and its not bad but the sigma is just way better. Maybe consider doing a trade in. Mine was a used from KEH.com and paid around $600

same iso levels on full frame and aps-c correspond to different gains of amplifier circuitry, equivalent to 1 stop increase of iso and resulting to consequent increase of noise and decrease of dynamic range - you may check this by comparing Canon aps-c vs canon full frame on dxomark
@rayspencer5025Ай бұрын
@@JeffGreshamYour only change in broken is due to the change in distance between camera and subject due to the crop factor. If you keep the same distance from the subject, the depth of field will be the same.
