The story of Vivian Maier saddens me and pisses me off at the same time. People in her life at the time had to know she was a photographer. She roamed around solo with a big ass camera on her neck. Surely someone was like "Hey are you a photographer?" But like so many artists, her work is only recognised after her death. It's like we don't want to see the art until the artist is no longer there. It's safer to enjoy without dealing with whatever perspective or quirks the artist brings.

Five of your photographers are portrait photographers, only one being a master of landscapes. I would add two honorable mentions to your list (and it's really hard to just add two more), but in genera expansion - Michael "Nick" Nichols was a master of capturing the essence of wildlife and his work has been instrumental in conservation movements. And his marine counterpart, David Doubilet, the master of capturing seascapes and marine wildlife. I think both of these masters changed the way we photograph nature and view our connection with the natural world.
@JeffGresham6 минут бұрын
David Doubilet was on my list but i felt that adding Diane Arbus fit because of her being one of my absolute favorites. I'm gonna check out Nichols. Thank you for the heads up on these. i can't wait to dive in to more of their work

I still have trouble forgiving McCurry for deceptive practices, but his photos (without regard to journalism) are powerful. Arbus is very intriguing, and Adams, well, he must have been the inspiration for Photoshop. He was doing photoshop in a darkroom with an enlarger, dodging and burning, on a god-like skill level with god-like nuance and artistry. Vivianne Maier was just a rare genius. Not too unusual for neurodivergent people, as I'm guessing she was.

What I tell beginners that are serious. Go to the canon website and set a watch for the refurbished R7. It goes on sale every few weeks for just over $1000 US. Then go to Amazon and get the Meike speedbooster EF to RF with locking mount. Then go to MPB and grab a Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 Di VC OSD. This is a very minimal set up that will cover everything they need to hit the ground running without wasting money on lesser equipment an having to take a loss trading up later down the road.

I appreciate your videos. After 20+ years of phone photography, I picked up my first real camera in September when my high school marching band asked me to be their historian. At least I have my niche - marching band photography! - and it seems like nobody else does it. My budget allowed cash for a 2013 Canon SL1 at the local photography store. I realized I jumped into the deep end of the hard part right off the bat (nighttime/low light/not allowed to use flash Friday night football + action/high shutter speed). I binged Photo Genius, and KZbin fed me your channel (and your beginner astrophotography video) after his beginner's astrophotography video. Yeah, I built up my Canon setup from 2010 to 2012 with quite a few nice L lenses as well as a few others. With my EOS 5D Mark III I was pretty well equipped. Then I dropped it this summer, breaking some internals so I looked for my way to upgrade. I ended up getting the R6 Mark II (although it feels cheaper than the 5D Mark III) and got an adapter with it. I can still use the batteries I used with my 5D Mark III and 90D and I can use all my lenses with the adapter. And they work just the way they did before. Some even work better with the IBIS (yes, IS with any lens you attach!) and AF also works in darker environments, where the 5D Mark III starts to struggle. The only lens that acts a bit weird is my Sigma 12-24mm, which doesn't seem to work well with the IBIS so I have to deactivate IBIS with this lens. Whatever. By the way: I still got my 5D Mark III repaired and it works perfectly again. :)

@@jimgam730 i will have to agree to some extent. Shootisng film teaches how to shoot in full manual, teaches you how to be patient and compose shot. Instead of spray and pray. I’m looking to buy an R7 soon and planning to use my 150-600C on it. I’ve gotten really mixed signals about if it’s a good setup or not. Mainly the focus pulsing in Duade Paton’s video. This has reassured me that this is a good setup and is worth having. I was actually planning on getting a 90D before watching because of the similarities between the cameras. Going mirrorless will surely be a better idea.
@JeffGresham10 күн бұрын
Going mirrorless is the best option. Make sure you pick up the Sigma USB Dock so you can update your Lens firmware if you havent done so already. I love pairing my 150-600C with my R7 it's a match made in heaven.

I have the EF mount Sport version, and it is great. You don't lose a stop of light due to crop. If you use it with the standard adapter you get a maximum equivalent focal length of 960mm f6.3. If I use my SpeedBooster I get about the equivalent of a 660mm f5 (plus there is a teeny tiny bit of apparent image quality improvement.). Now my version is damn heavy, I'll have to admit. That is why I have kept my old Tamron G1 150-600mm, it is much lighter (~30% lighter) and still not a bad lens at all.

Hi from the UK. Check out the video done by the Pilot Institute who tested 5 brands of ND Filters. After rigorous testing, Altman come out top, Neewer second and Freewell came last. Their F-Stop (Freewell) test showed some filters were less than half an F-Stop increase when upping the ND Filter from say ND8 to ND16. Pretty bad when you look at the price. I had ordered a Mega pack of Freewell filters from Amazon at £100 for my Mini 3 pro, but cancelled the order and went for a 6-pack from Neewer. Same for my Mini 4 pro, ended up cheaper. Couldn't find any Altman filters in the UK.
