Just want to add a few things: 1) Image Stabilization. You don't need it at 17 to 35 mm. The longer focal lengths need it. This keeps the cost and weight down. 2) The Vignetting. This lens is for APS-C or cropped sensors. If you put it on a full frame Camera, as the author of this video did, you will get vignetting. That really isn't the fault of the lens because you get no noticeable vignetting on a cropped sensor camera. 3) This Sigma lens can be updated via the firmware through a docking station (sold separately.) It also lets you fine tune the focus across each major focal length up to four different focal ranges for a total of 16 separate adjustments. 4) Low light autofocus performance has more to do with your camera's capabilities than the lens. As the camera has to figure out what object is out there to focus on. The lens is just feeding the sensor what its optics allow through. I have had this lens for some time and use it on my D500. Out of all my lenses, this is the best. I have not had the issue of AF mistakes as has been heaped on this model. I have to wonder if it is because most people do not calibrate the lens to their cameras before serious use. I can see it missing autofocus if the lens is forward or backward focusing too much. Thankfully, the D500 allows for autofocus fine tuning. I also used FoCal to calibrate the lens to the D500.

Had this lens for about 2.5 years and it's easily my most used lens, never had any hunting or inconsistency with it at all. This is much more likely to be on my 7DII than my 24-70 to be on the 5DIII. I do keep the software up to date though and undated it before fine tuning it for the first time so I may have by-passed these issues in that first update. I know I did bypass back/front focusing issues on the 150-600 Sport by updating its software straight away. That hub is a fantastic bit of kit.
@KPAki1Ler7 жыл бұрын
Would you recommend this lens for a 70D? Did updating it reduce the need to calibrate the focus extensively? thanks
@markharris57717 жыл бұрын
James Chisholm James Chisholm I would recommend it for any cropped sensor camera, it really is that good. I always like to calibrate my lenses, but usually it is done in camera rather than in lens. I don't remember this lens having as major update as the 150-600 but small ones as I've gone along. I've never had the focusing inaccuracies talked about in this video, but that may be because I do calibrate it, but these calibrations were more "tweaks" than major overall. I know I did make some quite radical changes on the 150-600 but not on this lens. Allow yourself half a day to do it and you won't regret it. I have 4 good quality L lenses, one in the range of this lens (my 16-35 f4) and at equal setting the Sigma is better.

THESE REVIEWS ARE OUTSTANDING, putting its pros and cons into groups and marking out of 10 really makes it great for viewers, as I trust your judgment going off your knowledge and experience, I'm so sick of other reviews being mixed and not knowing what they think, if I need to know how image quality is in yours I know it's close to end of review lol, which helps when looking for lenses I don't need great focus speed for, as I use a lot of wide angle for landscape and focus speed I don't really need

Darren Miles have you done a review on the Sigma 50-100mm 1.8 lens and why do you believe it took a 3rd party lens manufacture to make an an outstanding APS-C lens for Nikon and Canon. Why didn't Canon and Nikon make that lens first in your opinion?
@DarrenMiles7 жыл бұрын
I have - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpindKKEm7qFpJY - Overall, Sigma has done an amazing job with some ambitious ideas - specifically wide aperture zoom lenses - I'm a big fan, but my experiences with the 50-100 were a bit of a mixed bag...

Wow! Im glad im not the only one in love with this lens! Im using it on my Fuji XT3 via a Fringer pro 2 adapter and it really is stunning, its like having 3 different primes, also the focus accuracy is much better with a mirrorless sensor, well I dont seem to have any issues with AF so far, the you may want to try putting this lens on your full frame body, at 35mm there isn’t any black edges, ofcourse there is some vignette but wow! the images are truly astonishing and very Artistic.

Loved the review, Darren. Very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I'm trying to decide if this would be a good choice for video. I have an 80D and often use a shotgun mic and I'm wondering if the autofocus is loud? I've seen some videos online that make it sound like a garbage truck and i can't imagine it's that bad or you would have mentioned it. What is your experience with that? BTW, Thank you for your even handed reviews. I really like your channel (and Tony N.'s) because I feel like you guys do a good job of presenting all sides.

Canon did make an "L" type lens in this focal range for cop sensors. It's the EF-S 17-55 2.8. It's also about the same price point.
@DarrenMiles9 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan, thank you for your comments. The 17-55 is indeed optically excellent, but I wouldn't put in the same league as the Sigma 18-35 or any of the L lenses from canon - as it's poorly built, not weather sealed, doesn't include a lens hood or a case and it's also a dust magnet, moreover it runs about $80 more than the Sigma. But all of that is forgiven when you see the results, as they are pretty darn good! You're right though, optically it's about the only serious lens that Canon ever came out with for crop frame bodies - but the rest of the EF-S line is definitely targeted toward consumers - the only other exceptions to that might be the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro or the EF-S 15-85...
@sawyerh.9239 жыл бұрын
Well I've never heard anything bad about build quality. And I thought the Sigma wasn't weather sealed either. Also I wouldn't really consider the accessories it comes with to define a lens in anyway. That being said, I've never used either so you'd probably know better than I would how they perform compared to L glass. I just think if Canon made L glass for crop sensor, then that would be have the red ring.

@DarrenMiles10 жыл бұрын
Jango LhasaApso On a D7100, the Tokina 11-16 that you mention is really good, as is the Sigma 10-20 for landscape - especially on a crop body like the D7100. Not sure I'd use the 18-35 for portraits - perhaps for weddings or as a general purpose lens or photojournalism because at 35mm its the equivalent of 52.5mm on a D7100 (57.6mm on a Canon Crop Body) puts it on the short end of what is generally considered suitable for portraits (85mm - 135mm is "generally" considered portrait lengths.) That said, rules are always made to be broken :-) For example I LOVE portraits at 200mm and 300mm...

hi. thanks for the review. i'm wondering for film making purposes, (ASIDE FROM LOW LIGHT ADVANTAGES) if f1.8 is very useful at 28mm or 35mm? What does a wide shot with shallow dof look like? Is it a useful look? A common one? Its interesting and I ask because the conventional idea I think is that wide angle means you generally stop down anyways. But what if you don't? What does a 28mm 1.8 image look like? Do you think we see this type of shot in feature films? Thanks so much for your thoughts!
@thinkingoutloud37578 жыл бұрын
+PostModern Filmmaking You see all types of shots used in film, just like photo, depending on the type of feel you're going for. I was just watching The Fall (it's on Netflix), and there were shots of the murderer talking in a particular scene, where we were tight on his eyes, but the DOF was super shallow, to the point that one eye was out of focus while the other wasn't. Meanwhile the colors were very balanced and natural looking, not dark or gritty at all. So it just felt strange and twisted, solely on how the shot was composed and the depth of field.

@DarrenMiles10 жыл бұрын
It would be amazing - but you have to get an adapter - Canon or Nikon to M43 - metabonz has a speedbooster that improves both the maximum aperture and shortens the focal length. A lot of video guys use the 18-35.

I'm thinking about buying this lens as a replacement for the 18-55 kit lens but I am really undecided between this or buying a sigma 17-70 and save money. Speaking of image quality, is there so much difference? And is it the right choice considering that I love landscape photography, sometimes I do portraits or wild photos? I’d really want to make a qualitative leap :/ Love your videos!

Thank you for the kind words! The Sigma 18-35 is an awesome lens for a kit lens replacement and is very reasonably priced for what it is. Where it really excels is in low light. So if you want to do any city architecture at night the 18-35 is probably a better bet.

Seems like a good lens, but the fact you have to buy the sigma dock right off the bat to correct "Auto focus issues" is just downright insulting. Not to shoot the review, no, we used the 5D3 for that. Maybe less so at 34 and 35mm, but it's better to use the lens on an APS-C camera like the 7D, 70D, etc...

How loud is this lens when focusing? Will my camera pick up the auto focus noise when taking a video?
@Noksus7 жыл бұрын
It's not loud at all but yes it will if you use the on-body mic.
@shuolangliu3049 жыл бұрын
when u meant focus issues u meant auto focus right? because i wanna purchase this lens for filmming and i do manual focus almost all the time :)
@DarrenMiles9 жыл бұрын
Shuolang Liu I did mean AF, manual is awesome if you're into film - many a film maker have adapted this specific lens to the GH4.

Hey did the dock help fix the focusing problem?
@tuukkap60110 жыл бұрын
Yeap, wanna know the same
@sasca8546 жыл бұрын
It doesn't help if it is being inconsistent. IE, if it back-focuses sometimes and front-focuses other times, no amount of calibration is going to be able to fix that.

I need to replace my Sigma 17-70mm 2,8-4,5 with some excellent quality wide (for the portraits I have a Canon 85/1.8 and Im using Sigma only for the 17mm) lens for APS-C sensor, i this a good one? I will shot music concerts in the nights and weddings. I dont know if to buy this one or some not zoom lens, I really like how is 85/1.8 sharp, and I afraid to buy any zoom lens if it will be sharp enough... And what about focusing, sure its fast, but its accurate, i read some bad stories...
@DarrenMiles9 жыл бұрын
Jaromír Adámek Hey Jaromir, I have not used the 17-70, but if you're shooting concerts and if they're indoors and at night in a club or something, on the wide end f/2.8 is fine, but f/4.5 might require you to bump up the ISO for a proper exposure, of course, if there's heavy stage lighting, it probably won't matter... I'll try and get around to that lens at some point in the future...

Thank you for this demo video I have a question, if possible I have the following lenses from Sigma 8 mm f / 3.5 Fish Eye Circular 10-20 mm F / 4-5.6 18-300 mm F / 3.5-5.6 C 50 mm F / 1.4 A 105 mm F / 2.8 MACRO My question is Is that the lenses above what compensates for lens Sigma 18-35 mm F / 1.4 A In terms of efficiency and sharper pictures? Or do I buy another lens to complement the series lenses have? What are the lens that you should buy it?
@DarrenMiles9 жыл бұрын
Mohammed Jasaam Mohammed Ali Mohammed - the big thing about the Sigma is the f/1.8 aperture throughout the zoom range - granted it's a small range - but the image quality is nearly as good as having a few primes. I think it could sub for several of these lenses, but certainly not all of them.

I couldn't quite believe I heard him say that...
@DarrenMiles8 жыл бұрын
It was an unintentionally insensitive comment, I meant it in the most traditional of senses - in other words when I said it, I meant it as a compliment with regard to the good things going on at sigma, not about radiation from the quake, tsunami, or fallout from the nuclear plants. It's regrettable that it's been interpreted that way,
@CostaReall8 жыл бұрын
But I loved it
@thisisguitar18 жыл бұрын
Don't worry Darren, it is unusual for a traditional saying like that to ever have the possibility of an interpretation like that! Taken as you meant it I promise. Lol at Alexandre!

Is this lens Great for Wedding Photography ... On My cropped body !!!?
@DarrenMiles10 жыл бұрын
With it's constant f/1.8 aperture, it would be a great lens for wedding photography.
@emadpro10 жыл бұрын
So is it better than canon 24-105 f/4 for wedding .. Srry for many Q .. Thanks
@DarrenMiles10 жыл бұрын
Apple vs. Orange. 18-35 better for indoors - low light - 24-105 - better for outdoors and well lit situations, f/4.0 - even with the great high ISO capabilities of the newest bodies isn't fast enough to capture moving subjects indoors, even slowly moving subjects...

Sharpness great, but when the light is funny this lens miss focus ...do you really want to lose a shot at a wedding
