@@DustinAbbottTWI Reading this in 2024 with the information that I've gathered - My research points to Canon crop cameras not being able to accurately focus lenses much faster than f/2.8 using phase AF. It seems that they foresaw contrast detection taking over the market with mirrorless - so testing the Sigma with a modern Canon mirrorless I believe will result in flawless performance!

Dustin, you are the man, by far and I don't say this lightly, you are not one of the best reviewers for lenses, you are the best, bar none. Your reviews are carefully thought out and you take the time to do them in two parts, no one has or is doing this and I believe on rare ocassions you have done three parts. Sigma has had its share of problems and I gave an older 70-300 away and traded in a 150-500 because they were junk. Your review stuck in my mind and yesterday, while at the camera shop, I saw this lens remembered your review, tried it, loved it and bought this lens and its probably one of the best, if not the best for crop. I will do focal testing, but so far I'm happy and haven't had any problems, im a Nikon shooter and got it for $550.00 used after negotiations. I'm looking at the Sigma 85mm, 1.4, 135mm, 1.8 and the 105 f1.4, which I believe you have covered as these lenses are spectacular. I have a d500, d750 and the d810. I had heard the Nikon 17-55mm was and is great, but i have never tried one. So far I'm happy and its great with the d500, which is the only reason that I bought it. Sigma art has really turned it around. Dustin you have remained great and your reviews are beyond reproach. You have earned my trust and respect as I refer you to others. Keep doing what you are doing because your time and patience is, if you haven't heard this well appreciated.

I use the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 for the Sony A mount using an LA-EA3 adapter for my Sony A6300. I love this lens. It focuses quickly with the A6300 and image quality is awesome. (Note: Not all focus choices are available with this lens). No focusing issues and it really feels and looks like a high end lens......which it is. The actual focal length is 27-52.5 with a crop sensor camera and with the Sony A6300 2X digital zoom, the actual focal length goes to 27- 105. The F stop of 1.8 goes to 2.7 and that is fine as the high end lenses are usually 2.8 which then becomes 4.2 with the 1.5 X factor. I really recommend this lens for any of the Sony mirror less cameras like the 6000 series. Excellent image quality with very little to no CA plus very little distortion.

Using contrast AF (like the a6300) seems to solve most of the focus issues that traditional phase detect (viewfinder) shooters have.
@timelord2222
@timelord2222 5 жыл бұрын
The autofocus issue that you describe is basically the issue that I have with my Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM. When shooting through viewfinder, the camera uses a dedicated PDAF module which, due to the way it works, often has focus consistency problems with f/2.0 or faster apertures. The workaround is to shoot in live view, as it uses the focal plane itself to acquire focus (so it's 100% accurate all the time) - because of this, mirrorless cameras don't have such problems. On the other hand, I have no such issues with my f/3.5 kit lens, and if you stop down this Sigma, the problem might disappear as well. Personally I can live with that, as I use live view most of the time. I plan to buy this lens the next year, and save money for 50-100 Art as well.

Dustin, your reviews are above reproach. I was in the camera store today and tested this lens and it is sharp, but if there are focus issues, it might be a problem for me, this is one of the reason that I got rid of all of my sigma lenses. My idea for my D500, is to use the Tokina 11-16mm at 2.8 and have the Sigma in the 18-35mm 1.8 and have my Nikon 35mm 1.8 take over from there. I have a 24-70 Tamron VC 2.8 and a Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 and my Nikon 200-500mm from there. My Fx Camera, I have plenty of lenses for. I just wanted to fill in the gaps for the D500 in the lower regions.

Do you really need that 70-200? The 18-35 is an full-frame equivalent of 29-57 F2.8, while the 50-100mm covers 80 to 160mm on a canon crop body. Two to rule them all? If only the auto-focus would be better. And well, technical on a crop you still want a 10-18.

***** All lens' focal lengths must be magnified by the crop sensor of the camera they are mounted on to get their true 35mm focal length (Which is the standard). That means that EVERY lens mounted on a crop body must be multiplied by the crop factor of that system (1.6x for Canon, 1.5x for Sony/Nikon) to get the effective focal length.
@HiddenAnon226
@HiddenAnon226 7 жыл бұрын
lol what the heck drone 2 Just because the lens is made for crop sensor bodies doesn't mean that the advertised focal lengths are true for crop. Any kind of lens you attach to a crop body, you need to put the crop factor into consideration to find it's full frame equivalence.

I just got my 18-35mm for my 7DII a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it. I also notice about a 60-70% "hit" rate assuming there are no other factors to lesson it like a fast moving subject or an extra dark setting. This percentage is actually an improvement from my 24-105 L, although my best is the 85mm f/1.8. Using the SpiderLENSCAL calibration chart, I did end up adjusting the focus by +10 at 18 as well as +10 at 35mm. 35mm was a little frustrating because it seemed to range from +10 to +15, although I went conservative and just kept it at 10 -maybe that is some of the inconsistency your talking about. Regardless, I am VERY happy with this lens and my only real quasi-complaint, is that it is a very limiting focal range. Even for landscapes I am finding I want to zoom in far more than that range lets me (thus I am slapping on the 24-105 quite a bit).
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 8 жыл бұрын
+Randy Dietmeyer I would say you are seeing the focus inconsistency I was referring to. I'm surprised to hear your focus rate for the 24-105L was so low. It is tough going from a wider zoom range to a smaller one, but the framing opportunities with a much wider aperture more than makes up for it in my book.

+Dustin Abbott Since my first comment I did end up returning my first lens and purchasing a new one. I had almost no complaints about sharpness and took some very nice pictures while in Hawaii last week BUT it suffered from a very minor -but once you see it the first time, VERY noticeable flaw where a slightly dark curved band would appear on the left hand side of the scene when photographing something very light, like the sky. And even then it only shows up after adjusting the contrast in Photoshop, but nonetheless it is still a consistent flaw. My new copy does not have that and in fact I had to make much LESS aggressive calibration adjustments on it in camera (a 7D Mark II). You can see the (very) slightly darker "rainbow shaped" band in this pic. www.wayneslandphotography.com/Oahu/ Here is another image with the same flaw, slightly more noticeable. Again, once you see it the 2nd time and know it is something in the lens, that is all she wrote. www.wayneslandphotography.com/Oahu/i-5L5Nv2z

+aim - Games & PHOTOGRAPHY You are both right...or wrong....however you want to look at it. The effective focal length of EVERY lens mounted on a crop sensor camera is dependent on the crop factor of the camera. This lens has a wider field of view on a Nikon than a Canon because the crop factor of the Nikon is 1.5x while the Canon is 1.6x. You could argue that 35mm/full frame focal lengths have no bearing here, but not that the effective focal length does not change by the crop factor of the camera. 18mm on a crop is NOT the same as 18mm on full frame.

Hi Dustin, Although this video is fairly old I was wondering about its focusing distance on a printed (letters) item.. While I was doing a few tests this afternoon, I used an spray paint can as one of my focus points. it was aprox. 8-10 feet away and when I shot the photo, I noticed how blurred the lettering was on the can. Not the large product type but the opposite side of the can where the instructions on how to use were listed at. What my question is is being at this distance using AF on my DSLR and lens, would it be expected that the lettering as mentioned above be blurry or shout I expect tack sharp focus using the 35mm 1.4 Art lens? BTW, Thank you for for your previous replies... Greatly appreciated!

Shoot the same scene with Live View and compare the viewfinder AF result with the Live View results. A well calibrated, consistently focusing lens should produce about the same result.

So regardless if the lettering is blurry or not - this is somewhat irrelevant - Just as long as the LIVE View and viewfinder AF are the same "blurriness" then the lens should be well calibrated?

That’s correct. You can then chalk it down to the ability of the lens to resolve - not an autofocus issue.

I used some of the clothes hanging in the closet - naturally hanging and aimed for a few rather detailed patterns and colourful garments... When I snapped the shutter (using the camera's timer for steadiness) - then reviewed them on the LCD screen of the camera itself, (the lens was wide open at 1.4 and had a bright light in the closet) - I noticed at aprox. 5ft from the subject(s) that the detail on both the intended shirts photographed as well as a few others how sharp the focus was - especially on the ones that were out of reach of the spot meter range. The cuff around the sleeve of the shirt was super sharp almost like as if the photo was taken by a macro lens. I don't think that this lens requires AF calibration if the focus is that sharp...do you? Just to further add to how sharp the photo was, I looked at the cuff on the shirt with my very own eyes and had a rather hard time (I wear specs) seeing the fine detail that the lens saw.

Hi, Nikon user here. I've been shooting with this lens and the D7200 for several months and I literally love it for all its goods. It is fantastic. What about AF performance? Well, it's far from perfection. After unboxing the lens, it suffered very bad back focusing problems at pretty much all focal lenghts. But this was quite predictable considering all the reviews and the various opinions I read on the web about it. So I also bought the Sigma usb dock and spent 3 hours (!!!) calibrating the lens. After that the results were much better and more consistent, especially using group AF with the 15 cross type points of the D7200 which are far more precise than the others. But still there are times (more often in low light) when it randomly misses focus. I think that it's not possible to solve this problems with phase detect AF completely. At least in live view it is always spot on. In conclusion, you have to be prepared if you wanna use this optic, and obviously it is not for everyone due to its flaws. Anyway, it remains a magnificent lens for many other reasons. I hope this was useful :).

The thing to do is forget about autofocus. The only thing that really matters on a camera is the lens. If it's crisp and accurate it's a go and if not.....what's the point? Seems that, given this proviso, this lens saves you carting a bag of lenses around. But I don't really need af and maybe some applications do. airjaff My bigger issue is that I am able to appropriately calibrate just about all other lenses on a 70D body, so I was getting uniquely inconsistent results with the 18-35.

It will physically mount but will only cover the image circle the last bit of the focal range.

In regards to it focusing slowly on your eos-M3 that is canon's fault with the 3rd party lens issue....canon thinks it will sell more of their lenses...

MrKdr500 You may be right. This lens is too large to be seriously considered for mirrorless users anyway.

MrKdr500 P.S. Canon really needs to get its act together with the M system. They don't seem to have a clear plan for the mirrorless market.

Dustin Abbott I agree about getting their act together, i bought the M3 to carry in a backpack on my motorbike as my 5D3 got a bit heavy & i'm amazed how good of a camera it is but some more fast lenses would be nice. maybe sigma could make the DN series available for it?
@DustinAbbottTWI

MrKdr500 That would be awesome...but I don't know if Canon has moved enough units for the M system to really be on third party radars.

+Dustin Abbott I don't think they care. DSLR's are going back to more of the niche prosumer/professional end of the market where they'll be happy (well, happy is subjective lol) to pay the higher cost for the better quality. Mirrorless while improving is still a fair bit away from DSLR in the realms of image quality, ISO performance and most notably auto-focusing. The gap will get smaller, but DSLR makers will also keep pushing things there too so it's going to be a long drawn out affair. Mirrorless is amazing as a walk around system or as a second camera used for less serious stuff. DSLR's are still going to be the main money makers for the foreseeable suture though, short of going medium format of course. I'd go with Sony at this point too and just get a Metabones adapter for my Canon glass or just buy native E-Mount lenses.

does it crop it to 24mm or does it stay at 18 on a apc
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 8 жыл бұрын
+Premium iA Every lens has to be multiplied by the crop factor of the camera body - that's just the reality of a crop. So yes, on a Nikon APS-C body it has a FULL FRAME equivalent of 24mm on the wide end.
@ITzNIZh
@ITzNIZh 8 жыл бұрын
For example on a Canon T3i would it stay at 18 or would it crop it, thanks
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 8 жыл бұрын
Premium iA The lens will be a comparative 18mm to every other lens on the camera, but when compared to 18mm on a full frame the lens has an equivalent 28.8mm angle of view on the wide end. That is not unique to this lens, though. That's true of your 18mm kit lens, also. Every lens is affected by the crop factor of your T3i, which is 1.6x. If you want a truly wide angle of view on your T3i, you have to look at a lens starting somewhere between 10-12mm.

i paid $600 dollars for a new version of this lens(sigma 18-35f1.8) for a Nikon, they wanted $799 dollars for the sony version, what the hell is up with that?....so i applied the $200 dollars i saved to buy a nikon d3400 for $340 dollars also brand new......NO focus issues....

Howard Kahn hey man I just bought the Sigma 18-35 this week I also have Nikon D3300, I've been researching about this lense seems like the focus issue are on non Nikon cameras we are lucky! I haven't tested though yet... I bought it mainly to do astrophotography I hope it works quite an investment !!!

i have the d3400, what i noticed is that when the camera shows 0ne bar to the good, you can NOT trust the builtin flash to work timely or even go off, so if you are using the flash i would advice putting a new battery in...I also have NO focus issues with this lens....i think you are correct about focus issues are happening when people use adopters, not the native camera body........Maybe Dustin was using adopters and thats why he had focus issues....YES ! Dustin is using adopters BUT DUSTIN is in denial !, smile

Wish Canon wasn’t so greedy and produced a great lens like the sigma 18-35, and kept the price down but they never will as they overcharge for all their products.

QUESTION------Isn't the Sony 16-50mm f2.8 aps-c (24-75mm) lens a better choice for a 24-70mm match than the Sigma 18-35mm (27-52.5mm)?.....I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE SONY 16-50MM F2.8 ON A SONY A77 IS AN UNBEATABLE COMBINATION.....Is this a true statement or just advertising? question 2====if you use the sigma 18-35mm in manual focus then all your focus concerns go away? Well, I personally own 2 Sigma lenses and AF issue does not concern me. However, I must be lucky, because there are loads of posts in the Internet saying it's a common problem. That is why no more Sigma lenses for me. I'd love to have this and i.e. 35mm A , but it's too risky to spend money on sth I'm likely to send back again & again. Nevertheless, good luck to those who have no problems with that:) Having said that, I wish you more such good reviews:)

+marioplus321 You can fix it with the USB dock thing they have. This isn't a Sigma issue by the way, it's all third parties. Canon etc don't make documentation available for their autofocus systems so third party lens makers have to reverse engineer it to get it working, so you won't end up with a 1:1 accurate copy sadly. Using the dock though you can dial in the micro-adjustments at 4 focal points (on primes, on zooms you can have 4 over 4 focal lengths too so 16 adjustments in total). It's a bit time consuming to sort out but once you nail it you nail it and the results are fantastic. The 35mm 1.4 Art is so incredibly sharp, even wide open and it handles chromatic aberration like a champ. You'll still see some on high contrast parts of the image but that's to be expected at such a wide aperture but can be reduced or removed in something like Lightroom.
