The semi macro opens up the 24mm to some very interesting perspectves - particularly for fine art and design. I use the 24 a lot for architecture - interior design - antiques - furniture etc - landscape (prefer it to the 20 & 28 as a prime fl). I am doing a lot of work with parks so the macro for fowers with a spatial perspective can make for some special compositions.

Landscapes... been waiting for the Panny f1.8 version to come out as I would like to have a go at some night stuff but there seems to be no firm date when it is going to be released. Nice footage from the simga, looks like it was shot in the uk?

Got it in mint condition for $300. What a great little lens and well worth the price. I have my Event and Portrait lenses but wanted some lenses where I can pack light and not draw too much attention to myself. So for traveling light, I have my Sigma 24mm f/3.5, Sony 40mm f/2.5 g, Sigma 65mm f2, and Sigma 90mm f2.8i lenses to go with my a7riii.
@PavSZ Жыл бұрын
That's a lot of lenses to travel "light" with 😉 When I travel light, I only take Sigma 16-28mm f2.8 and Sony 35mm f1.8 or Sony 50mm f1.2 .... When using Lumix S5II, I'd only take 20-60mm kit lens with me but sometimes it is hard to decide which lens or lenses I will need and I take more than I should

Thank you for all of the lovely photos and video samples. Hard to prioritize which lens in the line to get first since it's too cold to be out shooting long where I live. The 45mm f/2.8 gets close enough too for my food shots at home so that's been fun 😀

Really excellent review, very clear, well produced, covered nearly everything - maybe only things I would like to see are comparisons to other lenses (if you have them) such as Tamron 24mm, Sony 24 GM, 24mm end of zoom lenses etc so potential purchasers can see if it is worth getting if you already have a zoom that covers 24mm end

I appreciate everything this lens has going for it. I was close to pulling the trigger before seeing the detail you showed on lens distortion, (3:21), which is not as minor as I’d like to see. At the max aperture (f3.5) and price ($550 usd new), I want the distortion to be almost 0: straight lines across the frame. This would absolve the need to use the in camera distortion correction feature, which stretches things not in center frame. I really like the idea of this lens, but this is hard to get around.
@PavSZ Жыл бұрын
this possibly could be sorted now with lens profile correction in Lightroom. I was reviewing pre-release copy of this lens
@Cthames12310 ай бұрын
@@PavSZI gottcha! After much deliberation, I have finally pulled the trigger on the lens. With the distortion being of the pin cushion type I’m hoping there won’t be anything weird with the in camera correction, and I’ll get true images. It certainly is a handsome lens and I like many things about it. In a few days I’ll be able to experience it for myself.

A few places here in the US had this lens at $399 Black Friday and Cyber Monday only. I think $399-$450 is the right price for this lens. At the $550 regular price it's too easy to give up the close focusing capabilities and get Sony's 24mm 2.8 G for $599, or it's own Sigma i Series 24mm f2 brother for $639; or to give up the 24mm focal length and get Sony's true 1:1 macro 50mm 2.8 for the same price. That $550 regular price also makes it a huge jump over the $250 Tamron 24mm 2.8 Di III that isn't nearly as nice, but still has the 1:2 reproduction ratio and nearly identical minimum focusing distance.

yes, it is too expensive new. There should be a lot of deals on it now as the competition is very stiff on 24mm market out there

Hey Pav, thank you for producing all these informative videos. So are you still owning/using the Sigma 24mm f3.5 lens? I am tempted by its size, its sharpness and its pseudo macro capability… I just wonder how fast and reliable the autofocus is?

If I did not have the tamron 24mm f2.8 & 17-28 I would have been very tempted to get this lens. I gifted myself the sigma 65 in early jan and the build - optics - design makes these I series lenses a real pleasure to use. AF is very silent unlike the 24 tamron but the tamron lets in more light - even a little more than their wide zoom. I do a lot of photography in dark archaeological sites, museums and galleries for which the 24 can be a very useful Fl - particularly wth the semi macro. The sigma is also smaller built than the tamron though weightwise more or less the same. However I am keeping the tamron for the extra light and it is very sharp. However for video & gimbal use I think the sigma works much better. It has the best manual focus & though not declicked has 1/3rd of a stop so also very good for video.
@PavSZ3 жыл бұрын
it is a great lens if you can live with f3.5 widest aperture. Good things is that you can push ISO much further these days to compensate for it.
@gitithadani3 жыл бұрын
@@PavSZ yes and for a lot of landscape - architecture even interior I work with 5.6+. And one can push the ISO but I use the a7r4 and I do push the ISO but I have to work out a balance between detail-noise & lens light intake. Tamron also has the semi macro and is excellent for this kind of work.
@JorshBrushTV3 жыл бұрын
Mmmh if I go for this 24 then I will need the other two to complement focal distance with primes. BUT I still prefer something like 24-70mm zoom at F2.8
@PavSZ3 жыл бұрын
yeah - it would not be enough on it's own. It is something else with it's close focusing though.
@JorshBrushTV3 жыл бұрын
@@PavSZ yeah. You can calculate the price of two or three of this primes like 35mmF2 + 65mmF2 = 1320$ Sigma 24-70 F2.8 DG DN = 1049 with rebate at black friday last year...
@Cthames123 Жыл бұрын
I think he Pav says it at 4:13, with the 24-70 you’d get the flexibility of the zoom but it is 3 times as long and heavier. This one isn’t cheap at ($550 usd new), but the size, sharpness, and macro features are its chief novelties.
