This is one of your most informative reviews. I shoot on a full frame and have always wondered how the images would look with a crop sensor lens. I've never thought about trying out these types of lenses, but it's great to know how the images are after shooting. Keep up the great work sir. You always give great reviews.

While not covering the full frame sensor completely, it's very close. Meaning it may work fine on Sigma's SD Quattro H, with it's APS-H sized sensor (which is ~70% of the surface area of full frame). The idea of using this lens and it's 18-35mm counterpart on something larger than APS-C and getting even more out of them with no compromises is very compelling.

The 1D Mark 4 and other cameras in the 1D series before the "X" models were 1.3 crop (APS-H) cameras. They could not take EF lenses from Canon but could take Sigma/Tamron crop lenses. This was your only option for something wide. The Cinema line of cameras are a 1.3 crop (though wider and shorter than the APS-H) but can take canon EF lenses.

Fun fact, if you're on Sony Full frame, you can get a viltrox speedbooster with this lens, then you crop in to remove the vignette, and then you'll be using it as a 50 100 f1.4, yes f1.4. But you'll lose half the megapixels, but that's not a problem if sure shooting on a R series camera

"More demanding fullframe sensor"? Sorry, but that's wrong. The APS-C sensors are more demanding in terms of resolution. Full frame cameras have a lower pixeldensity because they have a larger sensor than APS-C (which is the reason why images produced on full frame are said to be sharper. because they in general are.). So, this lens will be even sharper on full frame bodies (at least at the center - the APS-C crop). The other way around is the problematic one: When using full frame lenses on APS-C bodies you lose resolution as the APS-C sensor is more demanding with its higher pixel density.
@DustinAbbottTWI7 жыл бұрын
I've dealt with this in this thread already, and, you are right that I mispoke in terms of resolution. I was trying to allude to other challenges that will emerge - including chromatic aberrations, distortion, etc... that a lens not designed to cover the full frame image circule will experience.
@manuelbergmann92227 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for your reply and your clarification! :) May I ask: How does the bokeh of the 50-100 1.8 on APS-C compares to the Bokeh of e.g. a Tamron 70-200 USD G1 or G2 (or equivalent Sigma or Canon) on a full frame?

Well, to be fair, most 70-200mm F2.8 lenses accomplish essentially the same thing. There's a mild aperture advantage here (in terms of depth of field and more in light gathering), but images from their 70-200 Sport lens will arguably be better.
@thingsdemystified5 жыл бұрын
I agree Hero. It would be awesome to have a full frame version but I don't think they will make one because it would be too heavy. Getting to F1.8 would sure give you even smoother/blurrier backgrounds. Just got the 105mm F1.4 though. I think it should satisfy that itch for now.
@sigmaoctantis_nz7 жыл бұрын
Such an intriguing lens. I'd actually consider using it on a full frame camera, mainly because I end up cropping the sides off for a 4:3 aspect ratio anyway. The main issue that bothers me is Sigma's dodgy autofocusing accuracy which would be very important for such a lens.

If you are cropping like that it should work. AF was pretty decent with the lens, though the Tamron I was comparing it to was a bit more accurate.

Great video. For people like me with an APS-H 1D IV, these lenses are fantastic. People seem to have completely forgotten APS-H, but the 1.3X crop cameras were in the strange position of taking only FF lenses from Canon, but were happy to take crop sensor lenses from 3rd party vendors. My 11-16mm f2.8 Tokina for example gave me a wide angle large aperture lens that is fantastic for sports, the whole reason I purchased the 1D Mark IV.

Good point TexMex. APS-H is forgotten, however not dead, see the new Sigma SD quattro H, which has APS-H sensor. If it was spread more widely, I believe many APS-C lenes would find use on APS-H cameras, since they don´t cover the whole area of FF sensor, but maybe enough to cover APS-H.

IMO the 5DS is possibly their best APS-H camera. Mine spends a lot of time using this lens in APS-H mode. Being able to 'see outside the frame' on a DSLR is pretty nice and 30MP is plenty for most uses. Not as fast, but basically an APS-H version of the 7D II.
@allangarbutt62188 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the review Dustin. The reason I was personally interested in this is I would like to mount this on a 5DsR. My thinking is I could shoot in a 1.3x or 1.6x crop mode, negating the vignetting, while still having 31-38mp to work with and maintaining the shallower DOF on the FF body vs. the APS-C. A fast zoom like this would be great for low light event photography. Is there any chance you could do a review of this lens on a 5Ds body? Thanks again.

I don't have a 5Ds/R body (I've considered getting one but now am waiting to see what the 5D4 has to offer). Others have thought of the same thing, though, and I don't see why it wouldn't work.
@chrisogrady288 жыл бұрын
What was that about the 'more demanding full frame sensor'? That's just wrong, cropped sensors are much more demanding of the glass being high quality as their pixel density is higher. And decent crop lens looks amazingly sharp in the centre on a full frame camera, they just have a big vignette obviously. You can test this by putting full frame lenses on cropped bodies, they look less sharp because you're demanding more of a smaller circle of glass. This is one of the reasons that bigger sensors and bigger lenses of medium format systems can continue to reach higher megapixels whereas a 100MP small sensor wouldn't look any sharper than a 50MP because of glass limitations. There are quite a few crop lenses that look great at their longest focal length on FF bodies, like the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 is a really good 16mm prime on full frame. Just gets soft at the edges.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher O'Grady Yes and no (this conversation has already been had on this thread). You are right about the pixel pitch (and perhaps I should have been more specific in the video) and resolution, but a full frame sensor also magnifies other flaws. Vignette you've mentioned, but it also shows more flaws like chromatic aberrations, distortion, etc... What I was attempting to say is that I didn't see a lot of those additional flaws manifest themselves with this combination.

@JoeJacksonJr8 жыл бұрын
You seriously need to color calibrate the monitor your editing you videos on. Except for your head and the pattern on your sweater. Everything is black. Also just to point out full frame sensors are normally less demanding on a lens then a APS-C sensor. This is due to smaller pixel pitch on APC-S sized sensors. For example the Canon 5DSR is also very demanding since it has a smaller pixel pitch.
@DustinAbbottTWI8 жыл бұрын
+Joe's Photo & Video Channel I do have a thoroughly calibrated, high end monitor. The problem for this episode was more about the wardrobe/backdrop combination. One of the perils of being in front of the camera rather than behind it. By the time I go to edit, it is too late. As to your latter point, I've had this conversation with someone else below. You are right in the sense of the pixel pitch, but the nature of full frame is more demanding on lenses when it comes to chromatic aberrations, distortion, vignette, and a number of other optical issues that can diminish apparent resolution. This is the reason that full frame lenses often exhibit far less flaws on a crop sensor. This lens, for example, exhibits much more distortion when mounted on full frame and may not be a great portrait choice as a result.
@JoeJacksonJr8 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott Actually Dustin I think your still mistaken just a little. Often Full Frame lenses exhibit more chroma issues when on a APS-C body. However they often do not show distortion on the edges as bad since the cropped sensor only uses the center portion of the lens. I dont mean to sound like south end of a north bound mule here. I just dont like wrong information being tossed around. Hope you understand. Cheers, Joe

I use this lens because I use multiple systems across both video and stills and this particular lens is extremely flexible for this use. I use mine on a 5DS which is 50MP and has crop modes for 1.3x (30MP APS-H) and 1.6x (20MP APS-C). It works brilliantly at 1.3x at all focal lengths and could certainly use a smaller crop much of the time, it has heaps more than the 1.5/1.6x of APS-C even at the widest FL's, so 1.2x would probably be more than fine. The way the 5DS does this is by a metadata crop in RAW (and actual crop for JPEG), so I can always adjust the crop if needed. In the conditions I often shoot for stills I end up being quite happy with the natural vignette on FF, but the APS-H crop has excellent illumination across the frame, almost boringly so. I also use this on mirrorless and with a 1.4x TC it becomes a 70-140mm f2.4 and does cover FF at every FL (which is obvious since it is capable at 1.2x and perfectly fine at 1.3x). I got mine on sale and it is such a good lens I base a lot of my ongoing gear purchases around it.

Great video! Another similar topic that hardly anyone considered is using speedbooster adapter on a full frame lens, on a full frame body. @jeffrydemeyer54338 жыл бұрын
shame doesn't look like at 50mm it will cover 1.2 crop either (for the sigma sd1qH) Also a lens that is sharp on a high megapixel aps body will always be center sharp on a full frame body with an equal amount of pixels. Simply because the photo sites on the FF sensor are bigger resulting in the lens not having to resolve as much. Anecdote: A couple of months ago I seriously over payed for a used 300mm f4 the previous owner "fixed" on his own, because I brought my d800 to test it, it looks sharp on this camera with the big photosites. When I tried it on my d5200 it became clear how much I was ripped off, fussy mess I need to stop down to f8 to get somewhat sharp results... Great review! I have acquired this lens recently and it works fantastically with both my A6300, A7R2 and D500. Image quality offered by this lens is top notch but you are paying considerably less. Build quality is also great. It makes a perfect match with 18-35/1.8 for APSC DSLR or Sony mirror less camera users. But I don't think it's a good idea to put it on any full frame body as the useful focal range would be very limited and you would have to use crop mode to fully utilize it.

+EvulDali It remains to be seen if this lens will be a volume seller despite its great optics. It is big, heavy, and expensive - three things that scare off a lot of average photographers. Canon and Nikon tend to focus on consumer grade variable aperture zooms that move a lot of units.

All stunning lenses and by the far the best lenses in terms of optical quality. Yes, they do come at reasonable price points (50mm Art is arguable), the big cost you, as the user, is paying is in weight. These are not light lenses, and if you're travelling this can become a literal pain point. Equivalent Nikkor lenses are significantly lighter at the cost of some image quality but are still fantastic.
