It's a half a decade old design. As if lenses age as fast as camera bodies. For lenses, it is pretty young. And even decades old lenses render very good results today when stopped down a bit. I own the 56mm Sigma and I love it. Especially due to its tiny size and weight. The perfect travel portrait lens. Even though it is made of plastic, it doesn't feel cheap. And it's more comfortable to grab in cold weather in comparison to all metal lenses. In some regard I prefer the Sigma build quality over the Fuji. I tested it against the old Fuji 56mm. They are very different in character. The old Fuji feels more like a classic lens which harmonizes beautifully with their classic looking cameras. A more busy more pronounced bokeh, slightly warmer colors, and a nicer sharpness roll of. Actually perfect for portrait, but the CA problem remains (it is in real life ok, people don't pixel peep). It somehow sucks dust in its system, seems to be a common problem. I have 3 Fuji lenses and 2 (56mm, 27mm) have this problem. Never had issues with Canon, for this reason I kept most of my Canon EF glas and operate with the Fringer adapter. It really shines on a Fuji Sensor. The Sigma is the more modern lens. Digital, clean. Neutral Bokeh. High contrast, extremely sharp. Nice sun stars when stopped down.

hey my friend. Could you advise me? I have money only for one portrait lense for now. I between viltrox 75mm 1.2 or fuji 33mm 1.4. Or perhaps this sigma 56mm? Wich one you think would be a best for now? greetings from brazil.
@KevinDeal Жыл бұрын
I will do my best. It really comes down to the type of portrait photographer you want to be. If you find yourself being a portrait photographer as your primary discipline, I would argue that you need to eventually get all three lenses or lenses that reside at similar focal lengths. As to which of those three you should go with first, that comes down to the type of portraiture you want to do predominantly. If you find yourself mainly doing headshots and tighter portraits, the Viltrox is the obvious choice. If you find yourself being an environmental portrait photographer, more of a story teller then the Fuji 33 would be the way to go. If you find yourself doing a mix of both right off the bat, the 56 would be the perfect hybrid of the two. Just my opinion. Hope that helps.

Thank you for your video. I've viltrox 85mm and it is not easy to use. I'm looking for a 56mm. BUT, is there a real improvement to buy a 56mm when you see the great results you can have with 55m f4 from the kit lens ?
@KevinDeal Жыл бұрын
If you like subject isolation there is a three stops difference. That's huge. Plus in low lighting situations that's huge. It's also sharper. Having owned both lenses, I got rid of the 18-55 in favor of the Tamron 17-70. There's little to no chance I'll ever get rid of my 56mm because it's so tiny and useful. Thanks for watching!

@hellni7911 ай бұрын
I'm looking forward to this lens, I have the 16mm Sigma and the classic 35mm 1.4 XF. Anyway, 1:42 isn't it correct that we are getting basically an 84mm f2 compression/bokeh?
@KevinDeal11 ай бұрын
You’re not getting the compression of 84mm. You are getting the perspective of 84. At the end of the day, the lens is still only 56mm from the sensor, therefore the physics of light capturing will be the behavior of a 56mm focal length.
@hellni7911 ай бұрын
@@KevinDeal ok I see i probably cannot link videos, the Fstoppers vid about compression is quite well made, yes the distance is 56mm but the sensor is smaller than FF, if you crop a lens (whatever the sensor) the look in the cropped picture has no way the compression of the lens in the beginning... the compression is simply a matter of distance from the subject, in fact the crop sensor prevent you to use the 56mm as a 56mm, you need to step back and the farther the subject the more compressed it looks
@KevinDeal11 ай бұрын
@@hellni79 exactly. The distance is the distance and the focal length is the focal length. The crop, however, changes the way you behave and how your frame your picture. So if you start taking steps back, your compression becomes less-pronounced. If you take a shot at the same distance with the same lens with a FF or a crop, the compression is the same. Only the crop changes. However, you will likely be too close with the crop, which will cause you to move back. Now the compression gets less.

@@KevinDeal in fact 56 on aps-c same distance therefore same compression of an 84 on full frame , side by side with the same subject

@KevinDeal15 күн бұрын
I favor the image quality of the Viltrox 75mm slightly more, but the 56mm from Sigma is more practical and fits in tighter spaces. It's also like 1/3 the size and 1/4 the weight. You'd likely find yourself putting the Sigma in your bag more often as a result.

How do you download firmware update with it? Without the dock?
@KevinDeal2 ай бұрын
I've never done it, but my understanding is you go to Sigma's website, download the latest firmware (which is a .DAT file). Load that onto an SD card, insert that card into your camera, then you do the update in camera. You just upgrade the lens in camera. No dock is necessary You just follow these steps fujifilm-x.com/global/support/download/procedure-lens/

@@KevinDeal yes, the amount of chromatic aberration in that photo is truly shocking. Did that occur on most photos or was this particular photo a ‘freak accident’?

@@Lennart1995 it's that bad in high contrast situations when the sun is out. It's a characteristic of that lens. Likely the reason they came out with a new version of it recently. Great insights. I have the 56 mkii, but for family shooting and documentary I find the AF holds me back. Not as bad as the old version, but emough that question myself when taking it out and indefinitely get more out of focus shots than I'd like. I got it at a good used proce, so wouldn't be throwing money away if I sold it. For portraits I've already got the 33 for documentary, both the 75 1.2 for character and low light, and the 90 for those cinematic type shots. Before I picked up the 75 1.2 and 56 mkii, I got the Samyang 75 1.8 as a lightweight option, and as a step between the old 56 I then had and the 90. Loved the compactness, good AF, but the bokeh could be distracting. I feel this Sigma would be a great option to replace both the Fuji 56 mkii and finally an excuse to sell the Samyang 75 1.8. A lightweight easy carry, fun mid tele portrait lens to pair with a wide. My main concern is AF, while the Fuji diappoints, the Samyang is good enough if not lightening quick. How does the Sigma hold up?
@KevinDeal Жыл бұрын
The AF works well with the Sigma. Fuji in general doesn’t have the best AF. my other system is Canon and my XH2 has inferior AF to Canon’s cheapest beginner cameras right now. For size, you can’t beat the sigma.
@awake78011 ай бұрын
The AF shouldn’t hold you back with this lens. The camera body will be the limiting factor in Fuji-land. On the XT-5, I’ve never been disappointed with the eye auto AF performance of this lens.

Are you in the United States? Because I just checked B&H, Amazon and Adorama and all three of them have this lens in stock for the Fuji X mount. Sigma also announced that they are going to start selling the Contemporary line for Canon RF-S APSC cameras, so I'm not sure where you are getting the information that they aren't making this lens anymore.
