Beatuful Christmas pictures for this review... Congrat's again, Chris! I might add that you can use the 56 on Sony full frame, for portraits, with distortion correction ON, b/c, at f/1.4, the vignetting is not so ugly, but can add a stylish effect, depending on the backround. I use it like that on occasions, with good results and almost no post-processing needed, maybe a little crop from time to time.

I'm very interested 0:40 How do you get that math for the aperture equivalent? I thought the crop factor is applied for the focal length only but I don't know how to calculate the aperture equivalent between full frame and micro four thirds.
@christopherfrost5 жыл бұрын
In terms of light intensity (how 'bright' the lens is) it's still f/1.4. But the equivalent depth of field is just over twice as deep - so, f/1.4 to f/2.2
@christopherfrost5 жыл бұрын
If the camera had a 1.4x crop sensor (which don't currently exist on the market) then the equivalent depth of field would be exactly twice as deep (e.g. from f/1.4 - f/2)
@brois8415 жыл бұрын
In addition to what Christopher wrote, the crop factor applies to everything. Yes, the lens has f/1.4 brightness on APS-C sensor, but a FF sensor collects more overall light, so the f-number applies there as well. Basically, simply multiply focal length and f-number by the crop-factor and you'll get FF equivalent image quality, angle of view and DoF.
@johnkevin79925 жыл бұрын
@@brois841 I reckon that argument about light collection would be applicable if a full frame lens were to be used on an APS-C sensor because of a larger image circle than is perceived by the sensor. The APS-C sensor, however, gathers light from the APS-C image circle in the same way a full frame sensor would from a full-frame image circle.
@brois8415 жыл бұрын
@@johnkevin7992 the crop factor applies no matter which lens you use (the sensor size is what matters). However, if you do use FF glass with an APS-C sensor, then you can negate crop-factor math by using a focal reducer. In effect you'd be concentrating FF image circle worth of light onto a smaller area. Does that make sense?

Sigma 60mm f/2.8 or 56 f/1.4, which of the Sigma e-mount lenses is sharper @ f2.8? The Sigma DN 60 is hard to beat on price/performance ratio but this new 56 has the faster aperture and still not expensive. These lenses on an a6400 is tempting. A Sigma 16 f/1.4, 30 1.4 and 56 1.4 with the sony 18-135 is a solid and not too expensive of a kit. The lenses really make the sony apsc attractive. Thanks for the simple and to the point video.

@tubularificationed6 жыл бұрын
Optical design for image stabilization seems to spoil bokeh quality too easily. That's probably also, why most good lenses with good bokeh don't have it.
@gunsts6 жыл бұрын
@@tubularificationed Is IBIS better than in the lens IS? If it is the same, then all cameras with IBIS are nowhere as good as non IBIS cameras because of this. I learned my lesson that I need IS because handling a big and heavy camera with heavy glass tend to ruin my picture. Tripod is not a solution for every scenario, but probably having work out in the gym would do.. Or simply having the IS.
@tubularificationed6 жыл бұрын
@@@gunsts If you are a bokeh connoisseur, then yes, the lenses you find interesting will likely have no OIS, so having IBIS would be better then if you shoot low-light and rather immovable subjects. Because for moving subjects, you would have to go for short shutter speed and high ISO anyway to freeze their action. Then you wouldn't benefit neither from OIS nor IBIS much for your own shake. Unless you use long tele having big shake amplitudes. The scenario you describe sounds like that: big and heavy camera with heavy glass: that is supertele-zooms, isn't it? For these tele scenarios, optical stabilization is actually better than IBIS, because - the correction leeway of IBIS sensors is quite small, maybe too easily too small for long teles's larger shake. OIS in the tele lenses instead are designed to cope with this larger shake which could overwhelm an IBIS. - especially in small bodies like the a6500, there's not much room for the sensor. I suspect, that this is the reason, why Sony IBIS has a worse reputation than e.g. Olympus, even though the CIPA value looks decent in the Sony spec sheets. I suspect, the A6500 was designed to just cope with the standardized CIPA shake, but no "micrometer" more than that. Where in practial applications, the actual shake may well exceed this (esp. with longer exposures). This is also the reason, why stabilized video looks much better stabilized on bigger APSC- bodes (e.g. Fuji X-H1) than on Sony bodies. Because doing video while you walk requires big correction amplitudes beyond CIPA standards, which Sony's IBIS doesn't seem to support too well. That must also the reason, that the OIS takes precedence over IBIS, if you attach an OIS lens to an IBIS body (such as the a6500). So that the IBIS is reduced to do only rotational corrections, which are usually negleglably small or absent.
@gunsts6 жыл бұрын
@@tubularificationed you made everything clear about the OIS/IBIS. I use Canon 5dmk3 and some L lenses that are heavy, I don't shoot very long tele, but I do have 70-200 LII F2.8 that is too heavy for me to hold in longer time. But I think I blame it all in my physical weakness, my hands are not as steady as they used to be. So, I prefer the IS lenses. But some good lenses such as Sigma's don't have it, and Canon doesn't have IBIS. So I was wondering why Canon doesn't make IBIS? But your explanation made me think that Canon might know that IBIS is inferior than OIS hence they doesn't make such thing in their cameras. I also love to shoot macro, and what I have is macro lens without IS, and I find it so difficult to work with. I tried to use the tripod, but that doesn't work well for non static objects. Well, I think I have to practice more...
@dasaauto20246 жыл бұрын
Sigma doesn’t put IS into their primes, for better or worse. Being someone who really values IS however, the bodies that work best for me are the Sony a7 line, the a6500 and the Nikon Z6 or Z7. Canon have stated many times that they think lens IS is superior to IBIS. But since they keep releasing important lenses without it (the RF 50mm 1.2 and the RF 28-70mm 2), it doesn’t really matter what Canon thinks. It’s rumored that the sequel to their EOS R will finally have IBIS, however. *shrug*

Which lens is better for portraits (photo), Sigma 56/1.4 DC DN or Fuji 56/1.2?

Fuji 56/1.2 for a bit softer and less clinical look.

Hey Christopher, what do you think about micro contrast? I see you do not include it in your reviews. To me it looks like some magical property of the lens that just few can notice, I personally do not see it. Do you think it is a real thing, or people look at lenses too religiously?
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
Good question. Occasionally people ask me to review the 'microcontrast' of a lens and I always say the same thing: 'Please tell me a way to empirically test for it and I will'. And they never, ever get back to me...because it's a total myth. There are two factors to consider when talking about sharpness: resolution, and contrast. There is no such thing as microcontrast - it's made up by amateur photographers (and one or two others who should know better) who want to sound like they know what they're talking about. Very often Zeiss and Leica fanboys will claim their lenses have amazing 'microcontrast' because they're trying to justify to themselves the ridiculous amount of money they've spent on their lenses hehe.

Rumor says this lens is coming to Fuji. Would love to see how it does compared to Fuji's 56.

would you recommend this lens for products reviews?
@saifaldin_3 жыл бұрын
Image quality and AF is very good in both still images & video. The only thing to consider, is the size of product you’re going to feature. The FOV of this lens might be a bit narrow for bigger items (example: bulky furnitures), although it depends on how big your working space as well.
@Booyar3 жыл бұрын
@@saifaldin_ thanks a lot for your help Saif. What would you recommend? Sigma 18 -35m 1.8 ?
@saifaldin_3 жыл бұрын
@@Booyar Sorry, I’m not familiar with that particular lens. In theory, a constant aperture zoom lens would be beneficial (going from overall shots to closeups without changing settings. I also think that focal lengths around 24mm - 35mm on aps-c to be a good choice for most normal sized products. I haven’t done proper product shots, but I do food photography occasionally. You might want to research a bit on that Sigma zoom. In particular, AF performance, LoCA, focus breathing, focus motor noise.

@@saifaldin_ thanks a lot Saif. I recently bought the sigma 45mm 1.8 my latest video (KZbin) is shot with that lens the quality is great its just that I can't fill my whole desk setup or even me being in the camera without going at the back of my studio. I'm looking to buy a new one so I'm still in confusion 😅.
@saifaldin_3 жыл бұрын
@@Booyar If 45mm is tight, then why would you want a 56mm? 😂 In this case, a zoom with 16mm on the wide end would help a lot. Sure, the 56mm can still be used for detail shots, but it would be more like a specialist lens.

Hi christ I’ve know that this lens have vignette with FF camera could you pls try this?
@PeteC626 жыл бұрын
Yes, it would have significant vignetting because it's designed for APS-C sensors. If you really felt the need to use it on a full-frame Sony, you'd be better off using the camera's crop mode, but you might be able to eke out a bit more coverage by using it in full-frame mode and cropping manually in post.
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
If it covered full-frame, Sigma would advertise it as doing so and label it as an FE lens. On full-frame with this lens you will get very heavy vignetting
@tubularificationed6 жыл бұрын
And hard (black) vignetting isn't the only problem. As we know, usually the bokeh balls get smaller towards the edges. On full frame, they probably will get really tiny towards the full frame edges. As if the edges were almost in focus again.
