@@sonofnothing not necessarily, like they said at times animals come really close to you and 60mm is way better than 200mm. For me, the promary reason to have a zoom with 500 or 600mm focal length is to get the long end of the range. Getting the shorter end comes in handy, but I buy it for the reach and that's where I want the best performance.
@richardbedford61662 жыл бұрын
Great review, thank you. I do not see bird photographers rushing out to sell their 200-600 however. The Sigma is heavier, much more expensive (here in the UK anyway), unbalanced on tripods, horrible extension to lens body when zooming, and a so-so build quality - all compared to the 200-600. The 200-600 is so well built, lighter, sharp, quick & silent auto-focus and at a a great price. I've never really used anything less than 200mm as a commercial bird photographer (wild birds) in 25 years. The 200-600mm is also very nearly comparable to my Sony 600mm f4 at f6.3 in terms of sharpness and autofocus speed.

60-600 is a great range for shooting baseball! I sometimes can't use my 200-600G because I can't shoot the nearest base or the batters. But what I really want is a 150-400/4 w/o image stabilization (for lighter weight). That way I can use the lens under the lights also.

For sure. My sigma 100-400 was pretty useful but realized how much the AF was lacking once I got my 200-600. Sounds like this 60-600 would fix the focus. 200mm is definitely too tight within half a base line, but I would miss the small zoom throw of the 200-600. Compromise either way but the 60-600 would be a compelling all around lens.

While the Sigma is great for wildlife, you missed the opportunity to discuss what to my mind is one of the biggest advantages of the extra range on the short side. If you are photographing sports (football, lacrosse, field hockey) the action frequently moves quickly from close to the sideline you are standing by to the far end zone, or vice versa. With this lens you can get close ups of both the quarterback throwing the pass 15 yard from where you are standing, and then the reception 60 yards away.

Due to my shooting style I really am interested in the sigma more because I like to shoot wide images of wildlife to show context and a scene as well as portraits of animals. The only thing possibly keeping me from pulling the trigger on the sigma is I’ve heard mixed thoughts about image quality. I will gladly switch back and forth lenses if it means the image quality will be noticeably better especially at the tighter zoom ranges 400-600. In your experience shooting with this lens in real world scenarios do you think it would be a noticeable difference in image quality that will make me regret not opting for the Sony?

It’s a do all the things slightly less well sort of lens but it looks sharp and well made. Such a positive to have so many good lenses from Sony and third parties. Interesting. Why did you like 100-400mm so much? I own both and my experience is the opposite: lens creep, no strap eyelets, essential 10m-2.4m focus limiter mode is missing. While even not being sharper than 200-600mm except for the corners. I still use GM when I need a closer reach/MFD or more compact size but it just feels like a much older development.
@Skipsul2 жыл бұрын
@@d_r_e_g It's definitely an older design, but I've found it more sure and fast in its autofocus on my A9, where the 200-600 I borrowed seemed slower and tended to focus hunt a lot. And at least to my eyes on both the A9 and A7R3, the images from the 100-400 were much sharper and clearer. The minimum focus distance of the 200-600 made it impractical for anything but distance shooting, while a lot of what I need is closer in. And the GM, because it does collapse, is much much easier for me to pack for travel, event, dance shoots, etc.

@@Skipsul I've found the exact same thing. I've put my 100-400 up against the 200-600, the Tamron 150-500 and sigma 150-600 so far the sony 100-400 has beat them all in image quality, even cropping in to match at 600mm.

which vacuum you recommend? my 24-105mm F4 has quite a bit of dust inside (its my to go lens). Luckily my 150-600mm hasnt got dust in yet despite my usage.

The advantage of the external zoom on the Sigma is the fact that you can push/pull to zoom instead of using the zoom ring so that could be useful for faster zooming.

I haven't found the push/pull capability to be an advantage. It extends your arm awkardly, there's no grip on the end to push or pull it, and it's not significantly quicker because the extension speed seems limited by either the gearing or the airflow.

Also the Sony has like a 90° focus throw so it’ll still be quicker. There’s zero advantage for an external zoom over internal. I’m not harping on the sigma at all but their external zoom is cumbersome. It’s even less worth it when the Sony is the same price.

Super interesting comments on the use of tube extensions with big zooms. Have you done a comparison between extension tubes and teleconverters? When would the teleconverter have the advantage to justify the extra expense?

Hey guys, great video! I am a hybrid shooter and was wondering if you did any tests with this on the video side of things as well? Would be very interested to see which is better for videos as well. Keep up the great work!

That is a great review as always. I wish I had a camera that could use the new Sigma. All I have right now is a Canon 7D and a 7D MKII

@TonyAndChelsea Tony you complained about the length of the foot, but did you know it exists replacement foot for the sigma 150-600 mm and for some other big lenses from canon or nikon? As I suppose that sigma didn't change the design, I suspect that the replacement foot will be compatible. The manufacturer is jobu design

Would you be kind enough to compare new fuji 150-600 along with sigma and Sony zoom lenses of the same range. Thank you
