Had a 1980 GH SE sedan in red with the reclining back seat. Great car bought it new for $7600.00 and kept it for 11 years. Fitted after market integrated air conditioning and fitted a different carby, drilled holes under the air cleaner , upgraded the am radio to am and fm , put rear louvre on, driving lights on front. Rust appeared in the front quarter panels cause the drain holes filled with rubbish and retained the muck all wet. But I loved that car. Seeing you rebuild this , is great for the memories. Thanks Benny look forward to seeing you finish it . Cheers

Benny, common ground stereo's were popular back in the day. Cheaper to make. As copper was very expensive for car manufacturers. Its fine in old systems with low power output (5 to 10watt per channel). Once MOSFETs hit the market and started pushing 30 to 50watts per channel, common ground speaker wiring was abandoned due to noise caused by chassis grounding. FYI that OEM stereo will be worth decent money to someone wanting to restore a Sigma

I had an old N11 Datsun, it was my first car. When the clutch went out I swapped in an N12 engine & trans. I used to punish that poor car. It would get at least 30mpg no matter how hard I drove it, and gas was only 99¢ a gallon. The only trouble that I ever had with it was the threads, on the bolts that held the shaft mounted rockers down, pulled off. I grabbed 5 replacement bolts from the junkyard and it kept going. I miss that car.

All my old Colts were wired like that but they were AM only. iirc the cars all used a single console, so the Auto had the same position as the Manual. To swap you remove a plate for the for-aft auto and the boot can be fit to the opening left. I converted a Colt into a racecar, and that factory sound deadening was well anchored in place.

Must say that the Mitsi looks much more substatial, and styled. The dark floor is great with the orange body. Wouldn't it be sweet if the rest of the interior was also matching. It would lend the car a more contempoary look. And the plate could do with a surround. It's a period resto, and those gentle changes you're doing are bringing it back to life and leading me into a nostalgic reverie. Of course whatever you do will be worthy.

Negative to Chassis Ground(Return) works just like when you Jump Start a car. It is so the circuit inside doesn't die from arcing, also provide less voltage drop. Plus, it's better for the car when your battery dies since your light and radio will slowly fade away first before the plugs. The alternator is what's running your car basically.

Regarding sound deadening, areas where the metal body has been stamped into shape doesn't require much deadening at all due to the resonant frequency in that section of stamped metal is different to a flat surface area. In areas like this you can avoid the butyl/rubber aluminium backed sheets and use a spray on deadener to save cost and weight and still achieve a good result. Jaycar actually has a very cost effective sound deadener they sell, very similar performance to Dynamat etc in my opinion.

@@BennysCustomWorks I haven't had much experience with the CarBuilders product in my time. Mostly Dynamat and Stinger. When I saw that Jaycar had their own version I thought I'd give it a go in my Hilux front doors and am very happy with the results. I might give the gear you used a go for my rear doors and floor pan a go to see how it rates. My exhaust gets tiresome on the highway at low engine loads. Also, I'm looking to supercharge my Hilux 3.4L V6 petrol. You wouldn't have any leads on second hand TRD Hilux blowers or a decent equivalent would you?
