With the arrival of Sigma's latest i-series lenses (the tiny but excellent 90mm f/2.8 and 24mm f/2.0), I think it fair to say that the i-series is a 21st century autofocusing ode to 20th century Leica M glass. But judge for yourself.

I think you're underestimating yourself; your rendering is superb but where you really do yourself proud is the reliability of your lines. I always know what to expect, no matter how well-used a Sigma lens is. And I'm confident they're built to last (hope I'm right). By the way, the video of the Sigma 24-70 getting made at your factory is one of my favourite videos on KZbin :)

Yes, SIGMA. And please, continue to produce and support this great series of lenses well into the future. These, and the fp cameras as well. I own a SIGMA fp and plan to eventually purchase at least two more, hoping that they'll remain serviceable for many decades. I like the fact that SIGMA is a family-owned business. And I would like to think that you are making products that can also be passed on from one generation to the next.

@@3BMEP if I were to make a wish for another lens, it would be a 21mm f3.5 or f4.5. Basically an I-series version of either the Leica Super Elmar 21mm (which I owned) or the Zeiss C-Biogon 21mm - which I now own and prefer for its compactness and lack of distortion, well corrected in the SL2-S using a 21mm leica lens profile. To me, the 21mm is a great focal length for travel selfies, self-documentary, vlogging, and street. The excellent stabilization and high ISO of the SL2-S makes it now really possible to use small aperture lenses in any light.

I have the 35mm F2 Sigma and really like it. Build quality is just amazing. I liked the 58mm filter size as it matches the GH5 lenses filter thread size and I already had NDs, etc. When it came to 24mm, I considered waiting for the sigma, but saw the filter thread size and instead opted for the Rokinon 24mm f1.8 AF compact. While build quality isn't as nice as the Sigma, the size, weight, filter size of 58mm, and quality of image/autofocus has been great! Price at $499 for the Rokinon is really great as well for E mount.

As always, very entertaining and informative. I watched the entire video despite not owning any bodies that can use the glass you described. That is a tribute to your delicious delivery. Here is the but and it is an inevitable but. Your mentioning focal lengths and f stops caused my head to spin. Too many numbers in a short period. Oh vey. I love when you discuss gear I use or potentially will use. I listen when you discuss gear I will never purchase so I stay informed about what the rest of the world uses. Heard you mention, as an aside, October street workshop is returning. We will get together sometime. I’m going to work overtime in October. Only three days off that month. When going back to the old country to be with Claudia and you I am ready to be inspired. Until then my head is down and scrimping to save for the workshop and related expenses. I see the light. Thank you for this video and look forward to you new videos. Mask on Nurse Marty

I do enjoy your passionate ponderings Hugh. As I've recently sold most of my Panasonic M43 gear (all but the G9 and a 25mm 1.2) I've switched to Sony A7Iv and understand you perfectly when you say we are "spoiled for choice" in lens selection. I so far have chosen the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN and the 35mm 1.4 GM. I plan to move to the 20mm 1.8 next but I will say that 24 f2 from sigma looks delightful. The Sony lenses that aren't G or GM just dont have the same joy and thrill of use that the Sigma 'I' series does. I desperately wanted the 35mm f2 to work out but the focus breathing meant I felt the need to go to 35m 1.8 or the GM. Oh, to have an inexhaustable supply of cash so I could purchase a full line up of Image Quality first lenses like the GM/DG DN line and a secondary series the like 'I' series for lightweight days.

High Hugh, just got myself the SIGMA fp l and the iSeries lenses. Originally I bought these lenses because I just wanted to travel lighter with my SL2 but then also wanted to economize weight on the camera. Thus the purchase of the fp l. I wonder whether that package is what many would like an M11 to be: a proper tilt shift (!) EVF with a decent resolution, autofocus for when you need it, preserving the possibility to focus manually . . . Definitely SIGMA has achieved to emerge from that negative third party lens producer to a stellar lens factory, with lenses that rival Zeiss and other premium glas. Bravo, SIGMA! Love your work, best regards from Germany.

I have the Sony 24mm G Master and used it for oil lamp lighted live music video. I shot at 12,500 iso and f/1.8 , WB @ 2900k . I also use the Sigma 65mm f/2 for interviews in run n gun low light . Well that said I like the look of this 90 I series and it’s close focusing. It image looks near identical to the much loved 65 I . I ponder how it’ll af in low light , high iso during an interview or just basic use when needed . The 65 will loose focus sometimes and jump back with a hunt or pulse . I shot an interview with killer backlight and bokeh and a soft front light at f/2.8 once and it did this . I was looking at the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 or the Sony f/1.8 but was actually waiting for ( hopefully) this Sigma I series just because I like the 65mms “look” that many have said as no character and is too perfect. I see character in the 65 I and now the 90 I’s image looks almost the same . I like that ! What to do …….

Its the f3.5 variety of the 24mm that has the close focus. in fact all three of the slower lenses have close focus which is a pretty neat bonus. Have you tried the Sigma 16mm f1.4 on your A7IV as the ultimate 4k 60 wide angle lens, sharing the same filter thread as the Tamron 28-70? (hint, try with apsc crop off too).

Interesting and enjoyable as always. However, there is an error in the comparison of the Sigma 24mm f2 lens vs the 24mm f3.5. It is the 24mm f3.5 lens that has the 1:2 magnification ratio whereas the 24mm f2 ratio is only 1:6.7. This is one of the reasons that I am still trying to decide which lens to get. The faster lens would be better for astrophotography and low light situations whereas the slower lens would be better for macro close ups. I already know your response….Get both.

I bought an 2nd hand S1R with a Panasonic 24-105 f/4 thinking I might get some nice faster primes later but to be honest I just shoot the f/4 the whole time and other than the bulk I can't see the point of getting more lenses. At 100mm f/4 gives me plenty shallow enough depth of field. Is certainly seems good enough. I'm not a street shooter though. If I want small I use an X100V. So my digital has come down to two cameras and two lenses.

Could maybe Leica be willing to go there with full frame versions of their APS-C line, and maybe with Sigma partnering as they likely did with the Vario-Elmar 24-70/2.8? Having just gotten the 90, and having had the 45 Sigma for s number of years now I am beginning to see a real possibility of a) the lenses had Leica corrective profiles and b) Leica QC. So far, the 45 has been best on the Sigma FP, second best on the Leica SL2S and then the Lumix S1. Performance of the 90 TBD. Just thinking out loud..

I'm here to disrupt you and ask you a question. Should i go for the M10-R or SL2-S if i have an M10? Is it worth upgrading to an M10R and getting the SL2S alongside? Stay with M10 and get an SL2S or M10R alone? Appreciate your suggestion. I'm quite indecisive and as much as I want to get both right now, I just want to get your opinion if I should just get both. I mostly have M lenses so I'll be using manual focus no worries regarding any AF lens because if i may end up with L lenses. Your SL2S video regarding the 50,000 ISO performance is outstanding. SL2S is bulkier and has video prores capability. I'm wondering if an M10R High ISO performs just as well or better than the SL2S? I understand the double megapixel would probably mean more potential shake, noisier but it seems like the M10R can capture up to usable 10000-12500 iso. Hope to get your critique or recommendation!

The pros for M10R is it is manual focused rangefinder. Pretty quick and easy experience. Although longer focal length, it will be a little challenge but there is live view anyways. It is compact and light. It has that new great highlight recovery capability. The pros for SL2S for me is the high quality viewfinder that everyone says M lenses are much easier to nail sharp focus. It has video abilities that is pleasing in color science. The high ISO outperforms the Canon and Sony competition in terms of the noise reduction and noise that is outputted, its far pleasing. Only downside it is pretty heavy but I supposed with M lenses it will be about a little over 1kg.

Choices, choices , too many choices. The "I series" lenses appear to offer the tactile solution I'm looking for in enjoyment of usage. But the S5 remains substantially more expensive than the Nikon Z5 , which are the two full frame mirrorless options on my radar. And I note with real interest that the latest viltrox lens for the Z mount has an aperture ring - and the Z bodies recognize it........ There's an obvious problem with the truism "you can't go wrong with either" - it doesn't actually trim down the choices for someone trying to do so !!

I get the rationale for using an SL with small Sigma lenses. However, what is the rendering like on these lenses? Do they have the charm of the classic Leica M lenses, or do they simply create sterile, overly "digital" images that do not inspire or awe anyone?
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 2 жыл бұрын
Charm is a subjective thing, and in my own work I generally do not rely on lens “character” per se. The original ambition for Leica lenses by Leitz wasn’t character per se, either: it was optical superiority in a (relatively) very small lens which allowed the use of a very small negative to be enlarged and printed, rather than relying on a much larger negative to be contact printed. My Summicron-M 50, for example (a design dating back to the 70’s) significantly out-performed the comparable 1.8s and f/2 of the day from Nikon, Canon and others. I really like what this I-series can do, and have bought most of them as I am most interested in glass that gets out of the way of what I see, adding or subtracting as little as possible. This is also why I have migrated to high resolution sensors. Then again, my latest Instagram post could have been taken with a 126 Instamatic and would have looked very much the same, a function of my intent FOR the image. But of course your mileage may vary, and as always that’s fine. 😊🖖🏻

Thanks, those are very good points. One could always add a bit of "glow" in post production or with a promist filters. Thank you for all the stellar videos and photographs, as well.@@3BMEP

I was hoping for slightly more comment on the new i series lenses on the APS-C bodies - in particular I might be tempted by the 90 as a compact option for my CL.

The Panasonic is possibly the logical choice in terms of AF, aperture etc, yet I am 100% getting this beauty for my TL2.

Some months later I yielded to temptation and bought the 90mm for my CL - very happy with it so far. And then this week, I failed to resist the 24mm f/2. I was considering the TL 23mm f/2, but couldn’t justify the Leica ahead of the Sigma. I look forward to walking with it in the morning.

@@3BMEP True, but some smaller options would be nice. The 50 1.8 (the only one I have at the moment) feels huge on the Zfc but okay on the Z6II. It's quite a jump in size compared to the old F Mount 1.8 too.

Hmmm...if IQ is most important followed closely by small size - - Fuji X-S10 plus 16/1.4 and 56/1.2, vs Sony A7R2/3/4 plus Sigma 24/2 (or even 3.5) and 90/2.8. But then if shooting experience is most important?

@@3BMEP X-S10 with 16/1.4 = 840g, with 56/1.2 = 870g. A7III (for example, and subtract 25g for the A7R2) with Sigma 24/2 = 1015g, with the 24/3.5 = 880g, with the Sigma 90/2.8, 944g. Subtract 141g for A7C to go with Sony's lightest. The X-S10 can go smaller/lighter with the 16/2.8 = 620g, and the 50/2 = 665g, but with a loss in IQ,

I don't like the Sigma 24/2 I series. It has a genetic defect when looking at the distortion, the same with their 85mm lens. I know, many people are happy because it is sharp and bla bla bla.... I simply prefer a lens that is optically rectangular.
