True. The Canon is better no doubt, but at $17,000, so very few could afford it. The Z8 and 800 f6.3 looks very enticing.

Canon becomes more and more irritating these days. The close mount and APS-C-ignorance are the main reasons for me. It alraedy made me considering OM System for small and high quality lenses. Probably I will be considiring another system for better/cheaper supertelephoto. Both problems could be solved by either providing the missing lenses or letting third party in. They did the later for APS-C, hope they will do the same for FF one day. Like it was during the DSLR times. Otherwise they will lose more and more clients.

Assuming this new lens is actually coming to the RF mount (which I doubt given Canon's stubborn nature) you know it will be coming with MAJOR concessions. I will bet good money it won't be fully compatible with Canon's autofocus on top of the concerning price point which I'm fairly positive is one of Canons demands in exchange for letting Sigma in. I think it's quite obvious at this point that Sigma and Canon have a fairly rocky relationship. If you don't believe me just pause the video at 6:54 and take a look at the page and read what it says.That last part: "No more waiting" almost seems like an indirect jab at Canon. And with Canon tightening the noose around the necks of 3rd parties things will get tougher for lens makers and consumers alike.

I do not think that this is the lens that Sigma was talking about in your earlier video. He said that it will be a lens never seen before. But Nikon already have made that, so it is nothing unike. I think that the lens he was speaking about, will be a zoom lens. But anyway, this 800mm will be a very exiting lens for sure. Cheers, Bjoern.

I am hoping that canon has realised they are literally turning people away by not opening up the full frame mount... Though in previous videos you have mentioned many a possibility of some new RF mount lenses from canon themselves. I feel like if they do open it up, by allowing sigma to put this lens on the RF mount, it would be a huge step in the right direction for many canon shooters. I also feel like sigma was potentially on about some other lens... As they mentioned its never been seen before... I feel like that means whatever it is, wont actually have a competitor, but we will see.

Ich fotografiere seit 16 Jahren mit dem Sigma 5,6/300-800mm an NIKON DSLR und bin noch immer glücklich mit dem Objektiv. Klar, ein Stabilisator wäre gut, der AF ein bisschen schneller, dafür das Gerät deutlich leichter und die Naheinstellgrenze halb so fern. Trotzdem: Ein Kauf, den ich nie bereut habe.

800 is way too specialized. It should be a 600 instead. You don't use 800s on safari and you don't use them for field sports. It's a birding lens. It is not a sports and wildlife lens.

Hi Simon, such 800/6.3 lens is striking a great balance between reach, bokeh-power while keeping the weight handholdable and the price enough below 10k. when I was shooting bearded reedlings on December 27, I talked to a Nikon guy with exactly this lens .. and the next day I checked the specs and both the Nikon 600/6.3 and 800/6.3 where in Europe already getting similar rebates you're reporting now. Having such option on the RF mount would be awesome .. but I don't have much hope the first FF RF lens from Sigma will be in this area. I'd expect them to start with more "standard" primes or zooms .. I'm still troubled by the sigma manager's words about a never seen before lens .. and then have nearly identical specs like Nikon ?? He's not like the O-guy we wrote about in mails today. Any chance this rumored 800/6.3 is not a prime but a zoom ? In case it were a 400-800/6.3 .. it would immediately blow the new Sony 400-800/8 out of the water !!

That Sigma 800mm is a good looking lens, but that price point is very questionable. It seems to me Canon has pretty major influence over at Sigma. Needless to say this is a bit concerning for the future of 3rd party lenses. If Canon continues their stranglehold on the 3rd party market this could have repercussions for both consumers and lens makers for years to come.

Only way this Sigma 800mm F6.3 to be released with Canon RF is if this lens is only for APSC.

I'm really interested in trying out a Sigma lens. I've bought Tamron in the past and it wasn't a good experience. I would love an RF 70-200 f/2.8 internal zoom. If it could come in at less than Canon's price of $3k, that would be a game changer. An 800 mm prime lens just isn't for me. I have a friend shooting with the Z9 + 800 mm PF. His photos are incredible. Thanks for the update, Simon!

@WernerBirdNature I don't think I would. The lens would be so heavy. I couldn't justify the cost only using it a few months per year. The RF 200-800 has been working well. I just need a day with much better light.

@@cathco9 I would also hesitate before throwing 5 or 6k at such a lens .. but the Nikon version is about half a kg heavier than our 200-800, and according to Simon' reading on Weibo the Sigma would only be 200g heavier .. that's like adding a 1.4x TC .. these are a lot lighter than Canon's big white primes ! Anyways, I'd first rather get an extender friendly RF 70-200/2.8 (or 100-300/2.8) below $2.5k 🙈

I can not see Sigma coming out with an 800mm f6.3 for around $6,500.00 USD when Canon has there own 800mm f5.6 for $16,999.00 USD or $22,099.00 Canadian Dollars, I mean who would then buy the Canon version? I would love to see some Sigma RF lenses, but I just don't think it's in the cards. 😢👍

Thats a steal for nikon owners 5k for a 800mm f6.3 ,canon will open mount if only to remain No1 ,sony will then have to drop restrictions on 3rd party ,if your with nikon no worries nikkor teles are well covered .

As someone who shoots photography wildlife primarily an 800mm prime lens has uses for small birds but it's about as niche as it gets. I wouldn't use it at $ 6k+. And since when are 3rd party lenses priced higher than the 1st party alternative (Nikon 800mm?). Does Canon have the rope around Sigma's neck so tight it's not allowed by daddy to release a mainstream wildlife lens next to Canon's? In an era of AI where noise means less and less and it's more about just getting the image, the "big announcement" is a bulky 90s, 2000s era prime lens? Maybe I'll finally be not disappointed when Canon releases their next APS-C camera.

No one knows the terms of the agreement. Perhaps Sigma was testing the waters with the RFS mount first? Perhaps canon has restrictions on the RF mount - we just don't know, but the approval process takes time - that's for sure.

Too bad Sony limits all Sigma lenses to 15FPS and you can't use TCs. That rules out this lens for me.

Eh. I strongly prefer the versatility of a zoom lens. I guess if money were no object, I'd buy one... Or the Nikon PF 800 F6.3..... but I'd probably use it about 5% of the time > when I absolutely had to, because of super low light. As it is, I do a LOT of pretty low light shooting at F9, with my 200-800, and get a LOT of great, "low ISO" shots. It's all about a stable platform, a solid tripod, and the appropriate shutter speed :) I don't do, or care about a lot of action stuff. Honestly, I'm not even sure if I'd want a faster, more "pro level" RF 200-800, as I know it would be a LOT more expensive, and heavier too. I just don't even think a lot about a "new and improved lens" much anymore. Now, a "new and greatly improved" APS-C body would be awesome ! Come on R7 Mk II !!! :)

There will be no Sigma for FF RF. Canon releases lenses without L at FF Sigma prices. (16-28mm for example).

you still can buy old ef supertele primes which still work perfectly with R bodies. Even old ones have a great quality with the only downside as weight compared to newer versions. I was lucky enought to buy ef 400mm f/2.8L IS II for ~3k usd and it works perfectly with R1

I'm sure Sigma RF full frame lenses will eventually come, just wonder how many will leave the platform before they do. It is a slow process.
