Just my opinion is that this kind of trigger, as in variation 1, fits more for arapuca trap, in contrast the point for pauite trap is the sticks not to be in the middle of the ground and the weight or the game stands good chances to escape. Even at the exact type of the trap, attention should be paid the first stick to be horizontal-parallel to the ground and the other stick not completely vertical to the ground, rather leaning outside the trap, this way is ensured the sticks will not be in the middle of the trap and the ground, when the trap fall down. So, when making this trap, wouldn't you have to take into account how thick your notched sticks are? It seems to me, if you use too thick of a stick, the stick could actually keep the rock off the animal, allowing it to escape? Since the sticks get caught under the rock, too, would you want to go with as thin of a stick that will hold the rock up?

alaskankare thickness of the sticks is really dependent on the type of animal you are going after. because bigger rocks require bigger sticks for stability. And you only use bigger rocks for bigger animals otherwise you will squash the guts out of the animal. While I can get little sticks to lift up large rocks, it isn't optimal. So I gauge the stick size according to the rock and animal size. But yes if you tried to trap a small mouse with large sticks, it could definitely make a difference. Hope that makes sense.
