Fractals in Nature

Chaos, present in everything from a drop of water to the galaxies in our universe, has long fascinated people from cultures across the world. The natural disorder present in the branches of trees, lightning, and coastlines, to name a few examples, may seem to be completely chaotic; however, self-similarity within these phenomena is much more organized than it appears. Repeating patterns in many natural objects and processes are known as fractals, figures that show self-similarity at different levels. The study of fractals, both in nature and pure mathematics, has advanced numerous branches of science, such as computing, telecommunications, fluid dynamics, biology and medicine, and can offer innovative new perspectives on human science and technology.

As a philosopher mathematician, I can with logic and reason tell everyone, there is no chaos in nature, only compounding levels of unity. Fractals are a core concept in the knowledge of Pattern. But all Pattern is number and order.

Yes! but only to an Observer. We exist in a part of the universe where it has order to it, which allowed life to happen, and through evolution, we became observers and can observe the order (pattern) in chaos (universe) with the assumption that there is a single thread of time (we only experience one timeline and that is NOW). We see this (mathematical and physical) model breakdown when we observe quantum mechanics or biology. It's all order as long as you are alive (i.e. you are an observer). In this sense, Math is an abstraction that we project in our minds and map to the physical universe i.e. Math exists because there is an Observer that observes the "order" or pattern, and an observer is there because it's alive i.e. a pattern that keep on going (until you die) It feels like the Universe is different layers of fractal and leads to more complexity with simple steps repeated over time (to an Observer)

I have a bit of a stoner thought here: So Factals are interesting and I feel the mechanics of the universe can be revealed while searching for these fractals. Or that you can almost find repeating patterns. One of these strange patterns I thought about is a Black hole. A black Hole is a singularity with particles emanating from the poles or from opposite sides of this singularity. And I asked myself. "Can we find this pattern in our universe?" And the answer is, Yes! But I didn't look in space for it. I found it in time. Present time to be specific. Present time is a singularity with the past and future emanating from the poles or the opposites sides. What if consciousness is the white hole? The output of the "missing" information. This could really add to the theory that consciousness is just the universe experiencing itself. Anyways, it would be nice to get some thoughts on this. Do understand that this is a flimsy, stoner thought and not something that should be taken too seriously.

This is an "out there theory" but it is a good explanation of how consciousness became self aware and created the universe. My 6 year old stared obsessing about fractals (with an emphasis on the Mandelbrot set) when he was 4 and there's no signs of him slowing down now, just after his 6th year. Here I am, 39 yrs old and only vaguely aware of what a fractal is and totally ignorant in regards to wtf a Mandelbrot is. I've tried to understand it all but have been wildly unsuccessful. Many but clearly not all fractals are self similar in some aspect. Mathematically not necessarily self similar but part exponential or a fraction of the usual integer exp hence “fractal”. Highly conserved in nature because of symmetries rather than (self) similarities per se

Humans think we invented mathematics. We "discovered" mathematics(it has always been here before humans), and like fractals realizing the artist of all things---- used math to make it all work, like the signature on a human work of art...... the fractal nature is a signature by whoever one believes the creator is. But he/she/it is crafty and uses quantum physics to keep us from the ultimate truth. Boy were getting close though ;)

Well, this somehow contradicts the thoughts and ideas of Mandelbrot. We use soft and smooth mathematics to describe and model the behavior of things in our world. Basically almost every subject in math cares about smooth, continuous and symmetrical transformations(not all though). Real and complex analysis as is algebra being such subjects. Mandelbrot himself despised the idea of this, one can say, that he did not appreciate the linearization of the world (that is make all nice and smooth and trying to describe it i.e quantum physics does). Fractal geometry certainly steps up the game a lot, but still may be an too much idealization to describe some things in nature(we see about that). But to get to the point whether maths is discovered or invented let me tell you this. Look at the Navier Stokes equation: It fundamentally describes fluids, the equation itself comes from Physics one can argue. But, if mathematics can prove, that no solution exists, it has simultaneously proven that maths is invented. Also check out Gödels incompleteness theorem: mathematics in itself can never be complete, that means, within mathematics u can come up with statements that can never be proven or disproven. If mathematics really would exist, that would imply that nature is not complete....whatever this means is a philosophical question though. All, I am saying is you. are making it too easy to yourself:)

This only proves that patterns are pleasing to humans. You can map unstable formulas too and it will look like shit. We don't gravitate towards them the same way we don't graviate towards owning blobfish as pets. They aren't visually pleasing from our perspective. Cats are. Therefore God? I’ve seen a lot of comments arguing about a creator or god who designed this and I wanted to give my opinion (please try not to be offended this is what I found on the science side) With current human knowledge a lot of the time we don’t know why fractals appear in nature and like most other scientific stuff we make educated guesses science will never be 100% right because we’re always discovering more. Right now science does not have enough information to argue a designer does not exist it actually kinda points to the opposite and because of one reason the universe is expanding and we have a small amount of radiation pointing to a creation of the universe (big bang) we don’t no where matter came from and the laws of physics the chance of a universe existing and a universe that’s able to support matter is so exponentially unlikely that it approaches 0% and we still don’t know where the laws of physics existing also again back to fractals we see them in nature in places that was recently thought impossible and we have no idea how they exist in those places. This is my understanding of the topic if I got something wrong or you want to add something please reply and tell me.

Just a shadow of the abstract and higher realities, which are just a shadow of the nature and infinity of God Himself. In Him we live, move, breathe, and have our being. Everything is similar in structure and design because everything came from the same mind! What a beautiful creation! Stephen Harrod Buhner's book "Secret Teachings of Plants" expands this richly. In this video you have presented fractals in a very linear way. That's OK as an interface, but it misses the point that fractals lead us, naturally to systems thinking. your definition of fractals at :30 is wrong btw. What fractal means (as defined by Benoit Mandlebrot, the creator of the word fractal) is a pattern that gives more information the closer you zoom into it. The simplest example i can give is a river on a map. When zoomed out its just a blue line but when you zoom in you see more complex iterations of the river. Some fractals, like the mandlebrot set, have self similarities when you zoom in, but thats just a facet of certain fractal sets, not what fractals truly are.

3:15 That is 4D picture that looks 2D. When one is a bit creative one can easily see this as kind of 3D cloud spiral. When one is really creative one can ty to imagine this as a kind of swirling explosion through time, where the twirling cloud spiral gets smaller the closer you come to the assumed starting point of the universe in time. That well defined starting point is of course an illusion that is rather created by you own limited mind. Because it has it's calculation limits (?) everything that it sees, seems to have firmly defined starting and ending points especially in time. But a fractal has no defined starting and ending points, you can soon into it forever. We ourself create time and the illusion of firmly defined 3D Objects, by making an educated guess, about what we really see, getting confused in the effort of seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling etc. a lot of things at once. And than abort the process of collecting more and more information (Overload is a very big danger in the wild with predators around by the way). We make an educated guess at what we really see, and that creates our clearly defined reality and scientifically "measurable" objects. Ask Heisenberg, there is no way to measure something exact and independent of the observer...
