What sign language do they use? Like I'm by no means good at it (despite the fact that I can't really talk most of the time) but I use ASL, but that's you know... American... I know a friend of mine in Germany uses a different language, I want to say British but I'm not sure.

I'm no expert by any means, but I imagine that American (I'm assuming that you are American, as I am as well) sign language is quite different from Japanese sign language.

@@Jason_Belmont Fun fact - not only are American and Japanese sign languages completely different languages, but so are British and American sign languages. They're not mutually intelligible.

@@onesmileybaldy8303 Sign languages *are* different languages, rather than simply adaptations. ASL uses very different Grammer to English for example, mostly using context clues. A lot of this is because of just how many words are padding in language. It's actually really interesting, and I'm not just saying that because I'm bad at it despite having more need for it than most.

@@pumpkingamebox It's not usually a fast thing to begin with. Fushigi Yuugi one of the first isekais was released in 1996. However, the isekai trend had an uptick in 2010. It was over a decade before it became a thing. So it has to start somewhere.

Just a reminder that the sign language isn't international, every country has its unique sign language along with many regional "dialects". But ASL is considered as the international sign language like the english language, so many deaf people knows ASL along with their own country's sign language.. Well it will be interesting to watching this series and seeing if their description of deafness is more or less correct, since I'm deaf by myself. But Japan is a very different country compared with my own country. And Anime is not reality like what many tends to think, it's almost always so incredibly much more positive and tolerant in Anime than what it's actually in the real life.

I learned ASL as a kid, but haven't used it in yeaaars since I moved away from my deaf friend. Watching this anime made me remember some of the signs I used to know - because it shows simple phrases/words in JSL, and my brain goes "Oh! That's so interesting! That's similar to but different than the ASL, which I think was this!" - so as someone with a very barebones knowledge of ASL, it's really cool seeing some of the signs for a different variance sign language.

I want this anime to go viral, I freaking love mute people in fiction : the challenge and creativity that it calls for is really interesting to me But I guess it's going to be hard to animate sign langage in a series : A Silent Voice was a movie so I imagine they would have less of a problem with length and quality of animations In any case, this series piqued my interest

Finally a deaf person that openingly has their hearing aids showing. I know this is not always a thing but in a lot of anime you see deaf characters either without them or completely hidden. You don't really see a lot of characters that have their hearing aides and or cochlears visible

People saying they know "Sign Language" in the comments are showing how little they know because there is no such thing 😂 I know AMERICAN Sign Language but I wouldnt recognize much Japanese Sign Language. There is technically such a thing as International Sign but its limited and not a full language, just a few basic ideas to help deaf people get around and interact internationally.

Really good anime tbh. Art and animation was very well done, and the way they handled sign language was very impressive. I just don’t really like how Oushi character was handled during the first season. It was way too depressing towards the end, he was just miserable the entire season. I’m not saying he should end up with Yuki, but I really need some closure between Yuki and Oushi via a good sign language fight with some big tears!!! Oushi needs to let her know how he feels and explain to her why he acts the way he does.

It always depends on the person who does it, attractive or not🤷🏼‍♀️ that's why there isn't a sure-fire way to get a girl, because you always have to read the room and just adapt to the vibes. Not everything "works" on everyone, there was a mood between them and I think it just felt "right". So as long as Yuki doesn't find it creepy when Itsu does this, we don't really have to think about if it's creepy in general because it doesn't matter for those 2 (they are them and the rest of the world is the rest of the world), if that makes sense

lol so true. In Japan that gesture is considered romantic in shojo/josei stories. I remember reading an article about the localization of otome games for western audiences and how they’d have to change “he patted her on the head” to “he gave her a peck on the cheek” or something along those lines to make the scene come across more romantic in the localization.
