Many prominent leaders from around the world went to Nelson Mandela's memorial service in South Africa and, as is often the case at big events like this, they had a sign language interpreter there to translate for the hearing impaired. The only problem was that the movements the translator was making with his hands made no sense and many people became suspicious of him. So we brought in a real sign language interpreter to tell us what this guy was actually signing.

A foundation donated money and the money just disappeared because of corruption. Nice, huh? The black government isn't able to do anything right. The only leader who was quite good was Mandela. And that's it. I'm sorry to say this but we really need some white people in the government which would also stop the racism against white people (look up: Land expropriation SA) and the discrimination of the black people by the government.

The video has no captions, so I tried to transcribe. Please upvote! This is an amazing thing: as I'm sure you know there was a big memorial service for the great Nelson Mandela yesterday in South Africa. Many prominent leaders from around the world, including president Obama, showed up and paid tribute, and as is often the case with a big event they had a sign language interpreter on hand to translate for the hearing impaired. And the only problem was, the movements the guy was translating was making with his hands made no sense. Even if you don't know sign language, if you watch this, you can tell he only has like three or four moves that he repeats over and over here. Ok. That's him. And you see, he looks like a backup dancer for a singer cannot see or hear. Almost immediately viewers who actually do know sign language started calling him out online. And then video popped up today of the guy interpreting or doing whatever it was he was doing at other events too. So he's done this before, and I'd love to know what this guy's story is. Was this a prank? Is he a scam artist? Is he just very very bad at his job? So we brought in a real sign language interpreter, Justin. Where's Justin? Justin, come on in here. Ladies and gentlemen .... Hi Justin, how long have you been a sign language interpreter? About five years. Five years, and you've done this for us, at some of our concerts outside. Yeah, Hansen were here, I did it for Hansen. Oh yeah. Does Hansen have an inordinate number of hearing impaired fans? Just one. Just one. Oh. And is that a compliment for a band? Um yes, actually it is. No it is not. Um, alright so let's watch this guy and tell us what he seems to be signing, if anything at all, alright? Sure. Alright, I'll be quiet. Roll it. I support basic salutations here salutations. Inside joining in this week cigarrette inside to prove and on and on to support I would please. to say. from me to you. Talking to you so far. Is he even attempting to make sense? Um it's complete jibberish. Alright, we have one more. Hello. welcome. so far. Well cigarrette join. Bringing in different. to you. Um, a circle . And I would like to pray this offering. Basically this is fun. All of these balls... to prove, this is good I'm sorry. At least he said I'm sorry. So, in your opinion, does this guy know sign language at all? No, not at all. Well on the bright side he can have a promising career as a first base coach. Maybe so. Well thank you very much Justin, I appreciate that Justin. Justin Mower(?). And here's a little piece of advice: if you're bad at sign language, when in doubt, Macarena. That's actually good advice for any time, really.

@johnwt7333 Absolutely! If I'm just signing in conversation, I do just fine, but if I'm standing in front of a crowd or class giving a presentation, I get stage fright. Sometimes, I'll be so nervous I'll forget a sign, accidentally use the wrong one or get a bad case of the shakes.

The interpreter is having fun with it, and giving the translation that will get the most laughs. When he says "balls," for example, he could have said "groups," because the guy used a type of sign called a classifier that has meaning only in context, and doesn't mean anything a nonsense sentence-- like trying to figure out the meaning of "can" in the sentence "What is can?" with no other context. But more importantly, an American Sign Language interpreter can't really tell you what a South African interpreter is signing. If this were meant to be serious at all, they needed to bring in an real interpreter-- or better, a Deaf person-- who is South African. It would be like someone who has never been outside of Brooklyn telling you that someone from Jamaica is speaking nonsense, just because the person from Brooklyn doesn't know the dialect. That said, it doesn't look like this guy is effectively doing anything, but we don't know why. Maybe there were no Deaf people present, so he is blowing it off, and didn't realize (duh) he was in the shot that would be internationally televised. I worked as an interpreter for 15 years, and I had a few gaffes, like the time I knocked my glasses off into the audience when I was on stage. Thank goodness that was not internationally televised.

exmstripper Dominic Well, there you go. Thank you for telling us what is actually happening in South Africa. I wanted to point out that American interpreters are not really in a position to say that he is a fraud, whatever their suspicions, but the Deaf society of South Africa certainly is, and now I know its position. The US (what ever you mean by that) was not the first to spot this guy. Deaf people were contacting the TV companies and tweeting etc and saying the guys signing was not making any sense. Also the American interpreter would not have understood another countries signing, as signing is the same as spoken languages, ie theyre not universal.
@MindzEnt
@MindzEnt 10 жыл бұрын
K Schenk No this isn't his first time.. You obviously haven't been following this. They said he's been doing this for years. The company he said he was working for doesn't even exist. @Paul L You're missing my point. Ok the US was not the one to spot it. The fact that he's been doing this for years at high profile in SA is what amazes me.

Technically, you're right, but it's ok because this is a comedy sketch. This guy is so far away from any kind of sign language that almost anyone can recognize it's meaningless. It could have been a SASL interpreter on stage and you would have gotten the same kind of "interpretation of the interpretation."

I feel so honored to be the first comment. All of my hard work and dedication has paid off. Getting the top comment has been a dream of mine for many years, and i would like to thank those who have helped me along the way. First and foremost i would like to thank god for giving me this opportunity. Next i would like to thank my parents.I would also like to thank my pet tadpole for surviving against all odds for over a week. Next i would like to thank the squirrel that lives in my backyard for climbing trees because that gives me inspiration that i need to get through the day. This is a special moment in my life and i would like to thank any of my unmentioned friends and family that have helped me along the way. This moment will be a moment that i will never forget. I just remembered a few other people i would like to thank; KZbin, the fish i caught in the third grade, my light in my room because I wouldn't be able to see the keyboard without it, the internet for letting me go on KZbin, my house because without it i would be homeless, and last but not least i would like to thank all the people out there that actually took time out of their day to read this. I cannot stress how much of a big deal to me this is. I have been trying to be the first comment on a post for years, but that has not been possible until this amazing day. Hopefully my good luck will continue, but this is undoubtedly a rare occasion. If you asked me how i did this, i would say, you can achieve anything you set your mind on. To all the kids out there reading this, i would like to tell them to follow their dreams. Being the first comment is amazing, thank you everyone

No argument that Thamsanqa Jantjies (the "interpreter" at the memorial) did not know what he was doing. However, something important to remember is that American Sign Language (ASL) is NOT a universal language; sign language is different in every country. Many in the Deaf community in South Africa use South African Sign Language (SASL), and the interpreter (Justin) who appeared on Jimmy Kimmel interpreted the "signs" made by Jantjies as they would appear to someone who knows ASL. There's no doubt the signs made no sense in SASL either, but they also probably wouldn't mean things like "pray this offering" or "cigarette join."
