I signed up for the Beta! I have a dead zone that I encounter often even though I’m in a major metro/suburban area near L.A. I thought those days of lost cellular service were long gone, but everytime I go 3 miles from my house, there is a zone of silence. Texting, searches, and app connectivity are zero unless I connect to a wifi in a nearby grocery store! At first, it will be just text support, but I need voice and data too! I can’t wait for that to happen. And then there are those roadtrips when one has to search for the nearest EV charger….!

I just got my Starlink mini dish last week and it feels like it is well on its way to obsolescence for my use. When they get DTC to data transmission, why carry a mini dish and supply when all I need is my phone? A mini dish may continue to have applications but I’ll need to decide if that more limited use is worth it for me. Am I wrong?

A little suggestion. Like Mr. Rogers, you need to have a little segment called. (SCARY TIME) The first episode of scary time would kind of go like this. For the low price of $10 a month unlimited texting, unlimited voice call limited data. For the low price of $25 per month unlimited everything. Accepting payments directly to SpaceX. Package plan with new SpaceX phone and Starlink available soon. End of scary time episode.

I live in the boonies, in Arkansas. There are times we can loose cell service in the area. We actually have a cell booster for the house. When we lived in New Mexico (moved 1yr-4mo ago) we had T-Mobile who’s customer service was the best and their coverage was excellent across the state except some locations I had to go to for work (as a Comm/Network guy for PNM - electric utility) at Comm repeater sites and remote substations. This would have been fantastic then! When we bought this place in Ark, found out that T-Mobile was nicknamed T-Maybe 😅 because their coverage was bad. So we switched to Verizon. When Starlink becomes available I’ll be glad to switch back, for sure! And, this all makes sense to me as I’ve worked in microwave, satellite and 2-way radio in my long career. So fun! Thanks for sharing Joe (or Joseph?)!

Anyone know if You will be able to get the DTC if You are a Mint Mobile Customer. I keep thinking of switching to them. We have Visible which is very cheap $25 a month. There isn’t a cell network that covers us here at home so we are strictly WiFi calling over starlink dependent. I would love to get Mint and have access to DTC which would then give us coverage through the dead zone from Home to terrestrial town coverage. Anyway that is awesome that T-Mobile plans to offer DTC free to its customers. I read not long ago that it would be business account holders only. Exciting things to come for sure. I’m still blown away at how spoiled we are already with Starlink. Back when I was a Teen and had AOL over dialup to a long distance connection 200 miles away! How Mind blowing would Starlink have been then 😮

Towers usually have 3 antennas in a 120 degree radial span. IF you are 60 degrees off one of the radial antennas focus you will be in a null zone or have 1 bar in and out. They can turn the antennas to fine tune dead spots creating other dead spots so if there is a highway nearby the antennas usually flood the highway with signal.

I go on long motorcycle road trips. Sometimes I am in dead or very low signal areas. Would be a peace of mind to know it is available if needed. 🏍️

No more need for a SAT Phone. Your phone is that SAT Phone now. If you're an avid outdoors man, you can get help if you are lost/hurt. This will save lots of lives!

Hi Joe, I'm not so sure they will offer that service for free. This is a premium service, IMO they will not just be happy with it being a differentiator, but will want to milk some money from customers and cover their investment. Note that they are saying on the signup page: "satellite-powered text messaging is included at no additional charge during the beta test". That leaves the door wide open for premium charges once the beta is over.
