The theory that sash girl's parents/acquaintances punished Erika is kinda far fetched. According to my friend from one of the commieland, the sash indicate this student was chosen to supervise rule adherence among students, she doesnt have to be children of somebody high up. This rather indicate that bullying deviants like ariane is an accepted norm in this school/society since even the one who is supposed to keep the peace and harmony is doing it. Isa said that Eri left her due to her dependency so chances are Eri went to college to get away on her own and gotten gulag'ed as university students engage in dissident activities more regularly than most, east or west. Wikipedia's Student activism page has a cursory lists of such attempts.

I think there's more about it than just "the bad state did it", Erika is erased the same way Elster and Lilith(?) are on Arianne\Alina pics, all missing an eye...

One possibility I can think of is that Lilith is the original base for Elster. From photos it seems like Lilith knew and was quite close to Alina Seo, the same Alina that Elster was looking for at the start of the game.

I think about this parallel a bunch, but haven't seen anyone discuss it. Both Erika and Alina are seemingly erased from Serpinski, and both have people that look exactly like them, Isa and Ariane respectively. It seems like the game is trying to mirror the concepts of "replication" between not just replikas, but also gestalts. Both Isa and Ariane wonder about their counterparts and try to theorize what they were like and why they left.

curious what your theory is regarding the identity of the Spy on Rotfront, "Sun". Sun's note talks about Ariane and the Itou sisters in the third person, so it can't be them. So far my only other lead is Ulrike Kho, someone mentioned only in the medical database who was born on Kitezh and has had her doctor's notes redacted (or possibly deleted).

Erika was disappeared by the state on Rotfront and ended up as a Eusan soldier on Vineta by the alias Lilith Itou, who was the Gestalt for Elster. It makes too much sense.

This is a theory i've never heard before, i'd say that the chief issue is the timing as Lilith Itou and Her Squadron seem to occur before the Twins got through college, but your theory is certainly food for thought

@@Cristiferbeast You're right in that the timeline is wonky, but it's completely distorted anyway. I've spent the last week playing through Signalis twice; I suspected it the first playthrough, and noticed even more clues during the second playthrough. Here's some off the top of my head: - Lilith connection: Elster's photograph changes. In the very beginning ship segment it is a damaged photo with Ariane on the right side. Then it turns into Alina (in the Vineta campaign) in Sierperski, even Adler comments on it. Elster is the person on the left in both photographs, but in different iterations. - Lilith connection: When you finally see the full photo of her and Alina, she has a bandage over her right eye. Then Elster gets a knife in her right eye in the finale that mortally wounds her. This is not only a dead giveaway, but also a cosmic connection of a past life repeating itself, which is an underlying theme (check out Robert Penrose's CCC theorem). - Lilith connection: there's two quick flash screens that occur around the Mines section a few minutes apart, showing a profile view of two faces. The first is of a girl in a Eusan uniform who I think is actually Lilith. The second is Elster. They have the exact same face, except for different hair and eyes. This is also a unique angle of Elster's face that is only shown when she is looking into washroom mirrors. - Erika connection: You pretty much play as Erika in the flashback scene where you enter the room and find the kids beating up Ariane. - Erika connection: Isa is searching for her twin sister, Erika, and constantly runs into you. You even protect her against a boss. You also run into in their family bookstore, where I suspect she finally realizes who you are before turning to goo, which almost seems like it was conducted by a higher power who didn't want Elster to go in that direction. Again, this is a case of insane cosmic irony. - Erika connection: There's another strong hint, in the flashback sequence on the Penrose after the false ending. There's a note written by Ariane where she describes Elstra as having a Vinetan accent, and that she pronounces "ship" the same as her two friends, Isa and Eri, which she finds "cute". This is highly suggestive that Elstra is one of those two sisters, and I would bet it is the disappeared one that beat up Ariane's bullies in school and was a rebel like Ariane.

@@Cristiferbeast I should also mention something that I just realized that relates to my third point on Lilith (the two flash scenes of her face profile and Elster's face profile). The same exact thing happens with Falke's face profile when you finally meet her (where she wakes up and "FALKE" displays across the screen); this is the same exact face as Arlane when she wakes up, but with different hair. In this case, Arlane comes off as not just introjection into Falke's mind, but Falke's Gestalt. And in writing this is I just realized that if Falke's Gestalt is based on the "Great Revolutionary and her daughter" then that is referring to Ariane and her mother, both were rebels against the state (remember, her mother was taking notes from TKIY, which is considered to be bioresonance itself). The rabbit hole goes deeper. EDIT: Actually I'm piecing a lot more together now the more I think about it. There's a reddit thread I have where I am compiling ideas. It shouldn't be hard to find. I'm pretty sure I am about to explode the whole plot in a way I haven't seen anybody catch on to yet.
