SIGNALS FROM THE SECOND WAVE: A Live Detroit Techno Mix

The Second Wave refers to the second evolution of Detroit techno that began in the late 80s and continues to the present day. To me, the second wave represents the pinnacle of the artform. One could only hope the mythical Third Wave, the principal wave of the digital revolution as outlined in Alvin Toffler's book by the same title, represents a worthy next step in Detroit techno's sonic evolution.

It's tough keeping track of all these track names after the fact, so I'll pass on the full list for now. The vid description gives a bunch of names, but if there's any track you want the names to here, I do remember some of them. was reading your description...I say, excuse my french...fuck digital man ! live inputs and live machines, analogue or pseudo analogue, thats the way ! having said that, if u use a bit of ear, guts, and the right sounds, u can make software daws sound quite potent too... nice, very nice tracks, great ensemble of classic sounding bombs and grooves, smooth mixing overall, with some great passages (what software is it?) I need to stick some of my tunes into a usb stick, work out a mix, and try and stick a few minimal live ones from live machines too ).

Indeed, fuck digital. I was referring to the "techno rebels" in Alvin Toffler's novel "The Third Wave". Juan Atkins created the name "techno" for the genre after reading that book. The techno rebels were hero of the digital revolution.. hackers, etc. That's Virtual DJ Pro 8. I'm a noob at this mixing thing -- only Traktor and VDJ8 works out of the box with my really old midi mixer, which I had in a closet for nearly ten years before I decided to learn how to use it (only recently). By the way, I wasn't mixing with high quality MP3s here, so the sound quality on some of the tracks might be a bit off. Downloaded them from KZbin. Blasphemy I know. I'm going to be putting up more mixes soon.. shorter ones though since it took me like three days to upload this one. Slow ass internet here.

New mix is up! Let me know how the sounds levels are on your side.. I wonder if I didn't up the volume enough on the mix. Thanks man. I'm still getting accustomed to mixing. The new mix has a few mistakes in there, and at least one major mistake where I forgot to disable the low pass filter -- but mostly smooth mixing. I even added a few Robert Hood tracks near the end too. Heh!

interesting cuts and pastes....so, that knob is for pitch?

I didn't use any pitch knobs in this, just minor slider adjustments to match BPM as closely as possible, then using the jog wheels to maintain the mix. I also used a high pass filter.. that's it really.

Not this time, if I recall. Love his tracks, but I prefer full, fat techno. His minimal stuff is great, but it doesn't hit me in the chest when it's mixed. It's a bit more on the chill side for me.

yeah... I need to do more compact and better sub-eq and shorter tracks for me and others to enjoy in a quick and fast potent way... I love trip music but sometimes it can too long of a long journey? good flow on the selection department tho I have to say..yes , definitely more mixes plz...

Thanks a lot man. More mixes coming. My favourite part of the mix is 50:35 into the next track (Damon Wild, "Avion"). That one went really smooth and the two tracks had nice synergy mixed together. Before I put this mix up, I had something of a plan about which tracks I wanted to mix -- you'll notice I keep tabbing out into Notepad to check my list, but by the end of the mix that went out the window. LOL!
