Hey guys! Ryan here. I just wanted to add that if we are in the store or wherever and we are all wearing masks, please do not try to communicate with me. It is very difficult to understand signing without the ability to use facial expressions.😄

First and foremost, I enjoyed this video as I do all your others. 2nd: Coffee! LOL And 3rd: I worked in a book store when I was younger. Used to get so excited when one specific customer came in, because we would have a full on convo in ASL-- I got to practice, and we each got to know one another a little more--the few times he came in. The first time we met, he was signing with his sister, and they were kind of just standing in the middle of the store, so I went right up and asked if I could help them find anything. No one else on staff signed. Some of my coworkers were just watching them converse, amazed but unable to understand what was being said. I never did ask why he signed. You just brought it to my attention that people might do that, and that it might be a very personal thing for him or someone else. Also, it seems like a strange way to start a conversation. No one walks up to me and says, "hey, can you hear me when I talk?" LOL. (I sure can, Bob, but I'm starting to wish I couldn't.) It would make more sense to verify that I speak English, so I like the idea of asking "Do you sign?" Thanks for these insights. Now that I'm a bit older, I always feel awkward starting up conversation with strangers (which is why I kinda force myself to say hello to one stranger every time I leave my house... Feels good to greet others with a smile, and maybe get a smile back.). It's a good reminder that we are all people, no matter what language we speak. Thanks again for the reality check.

I just found your guys' channel, this is great!! I started learning ASL in 7th grade when I had a deaf teacher and decided I liked it a lot so I took her ASL class with my normal classes with her too and it was great. I kept learning in 8th grade but unfortunately my highschool doesn't offer it. I luckily still remember quite a bit! One of the first things my deaf teacher taught us was how important facial expressions are.😄

I remember being up in Estonia, and this person saw I was deaf, and started signing to me. They were deaf also, but it was such a connection because I was a foreigner and we managed to find each other while shopping for produce. They were signing in their native sign and I in mine and though neither of us really understood each other, it was the best moment of the entire trip! Like YES DEAF SAME. But also, I’m an introvert pls go away

Same XD but I think I might be a extrovert with a massive anxiety and a lot of being aware of what I do and so worried abt all the stupid small things abt myself like how awkward I out the charger to the charging port or if I trip or whatever, one time I nearly had sweat all over my face cause I couldn’t control my breathing and I was stupidly self conscious of my breathing to the point where I thought everyone could hear me 🤦🏽‍♂️ nearly made my self pass out by holding my breath (I was using mask btw so maybe that’s the cause)

I had gotten a sandwich in a Subway once on my lunch break and was looking to sit and eat quickly. There was only one free chair and it was at a table with two other girls. I walked up to them and asked if I could sit there. They looked at me confused and gestured that they were deaf. I gestured to the char and they nodded and smiled. After I finished eating I was able to sign "thank you" and "nice to meet you" and they signed that they were happy to talk to me. Another time I was at a beach enjoying the day. I don't remember how I got into the conversation, but I was talking to a deaf girl and her interpreter/friend using whatever sign I could. I was having a great day that day and was smiling a LOT. lol. I guess my smile left an impression because when we finished our conversation she gifted me my sign name. (Dimple but with the pinky (J) finger instead of the pointer finger)

I learned ASL in college, as I was getting my degree in special education and it was part of the curriculum. I used it quite a bit as a teacher, but the best interaction I had was on a playground. I had taken my daughter, and there was a very young girl sitting on the swings. She was only about 4 years old and her mom was quite far from her, talking to another adult. I asked her if she wanted help and realized she couldn't hear me so I asked her using sign language. She was so happy and started talking to me and then I pushed her on the swing. Her mom noticed and approached me with concern. After communicating with her daughter, she started to cry and she thanked me. She said that it is so very infrequent that her daughter can talk to anyone due to the language barrier. It was such a simple thing to me, but it meant the world to them both ❤️

I've definitely caught myself staring at people I've seen using ASL before because I just find it so amazing to watch, how rapidly they can sign, I think it's such a beautiful language! I feel the same. I feel bad for staring because it is beautiful to watch. And Ryan shared that he sees so much around him, is there a way to watch and not feel invasive? *COFFEE!* *Thank you for answering this question! I personally have met and signed with a few deaf people- I've been teaching myself ASL at home for a few years & took a class in college - and they said they appreciated me trying to speak to them! I get being nervous or not wanting to sign wrong because you feel like you might offend the person, but in my experience the response to my attempts at communication has been overwhelmingly positive! I was even told by one young deaf girl that my signing to her made her so happy because people had been speaking through her interpreter all day and not even acknowledging her. I encourage you to pick up ASL if you're interested because it's such a beautiful language! I'm studying medical ASL now in the event I encounter deaf patients later on. I want them to feel comfortable speaking with me. Much love to you both! Thank you for another informative and entertaining video! Love to yal and Java! Stay safe!* 💕☕😊

I took ASL for 3 years in high school, being about 2-3 years later I forgot a lot and I’m kind of rusty. But I often get deaf customers where I work and they always really appreciate the fact that I can sign and help them (if they need it). My high school ASL teachers also taught us about deaf culture and etiquette so I try not to interpret for people unless they ask. The confirmation is good to know especially since you don’t wanna come off as rude or inconsiderate.

When I was growing up, my military family lived overseas in several countries for 2-4 years at a time. We were taught that it was rude to not even try to communicate in the host country’s language. As soon as we were notified of our upcoming duty station we would dive into learning that county’s language through the Berlitz language guides that were available to us. As school children once we reached our host country our school always taught that country’s language as part of our daily classes. So, I would think that would be the same when trying to communicate with someone who uses ASL.

Hi Ellen and Ryan! Thank you for these videos. As someone with social anxiety, it's really hard for me to interact with people, so being able to learn anonymously how to be a better neighbour to deaf people in my region is soooo helpful. This channel is a wonderful ambassador and introduction for how hearing people can be respectful to deaf people. Ryan, I think it's wonderful that you don't mind chatting with people if you have a moment. That is a very kind offer, and suggests you have a lot of patience and tolerance. I'm in the LGBTQ+ community, and I have mental health obstacles, and while I will happily talk a stranger's ear off about the mental health stuff, I really dislike talking to strangers about the LGBTQ+ stuff. If people ask me questions about that, I try to direct them to people who - similar to the both of you - make it their goal to educate people about their experiences. Which is, I think, an overly personalized way of saying thank you for being ambassadors for deaf culture and being willing to teach us how to be better citizens of the world that we all share. Anyways, thanks again, you're both brilliant.

When I was in elementary school my best friend’s dad was deaf so her family all spoke ASL. I was really close to them and I spent a lot of time with them and had fun going to places for the deaf. I was really fascinated and learned the basics, but we lost touch and now, a few years later, I only remember a few words and the ABCs. She told me that reading lips was a myth and it’s frustrating when people assume deaf people can read lips. This brings me to my question, as a person born deaf, how did you learn to read lips as you were raised learning ASL? Also, if someone were to just speak to you, without signing, how well could you understand them? Ps. Just found ur channel, but I’m obsessed! You got nice coffee mug there! ☕️

I just wanted to ask you both that : when you were young did you ever knew that you're gonna be this famous?? And I'm very happy that I discovered your channel becuz of that I'm a little good at sign language than before so thanks a lot and till not I'm partially deaf from both my ears so because of you both I never felt like I'm the only one who's deaf cuz I'm the only one in my whole family tree and my friend group and my school who's partially deaf so it's a little difficult to attend my online classes and rn I'm in 6th grade so in our school it's a system that when we go in middle school all the teachers will be changed so Al my new teachers are a little confused to talking to me and whenever I talk it's a little muddled and loud so it's a problem...............but I'm trying to understand my online classes a much as i can. But thanks anyways..... (btw i became partially deaf 1 year ago I don't know how?? )

I’m deaf too!! Mostly deaf, I wear hearing aids all the time. I totally know how that feels. It’s kind of a breath of fresh air to meet deaf ppl cause sometimes I feel lonely in being the only deaf person in my friend groups.

Sign language internationally: what level of difficulty would you have using asl to communicate if you were overseas eg in Australia or the UK? Do you have experience with that?

Other countries have different sign languages and in some, more than one. ASL is recognized and used in 40 different countries, but like you mentioned, UK and Australia, they have different sign languages

Yes exactly. I know this thank you Yago and Alex. I was asking how easy it is to understand. I looked into the various linguistic trees of sign languages and where they branch off last night which answered my question. Like with spoken languages sign languages have different linguistic branches other languages from the same branch are easier to understand while if they have different roots they vary much more widely. An example with spoken languages is people who speak French or italian will be able to understand more Portuguese without learning any than they would be able to understand Xhosa.

I was asking about the level of difficulty in understanding and everyone somehow seemed to think I was ignorant about there being many varied languages....thank you for assuming I was a moron
@yagoalmeida3691
@yagoalmeida3691 3 жыл бұрын
@@robyncorson4002 because that's not what was worded in your comment. But anyways, sign language has similar signs in all languages. But letters and of course some objects or people signs will vary quite a bit. Characteristic signs might be similar or the same
