Story Time!!! So about a year ago I was cashiering and rang up a family of deaf people and felt so bad that I couldn’t communicate with them. There was a lot of pointing and awkward hand gestures. This memory came back to haunt me about a couple of weeks ago so I’ve been watching your videos and teaching myself sign language during my free time. Lo and behold, I got a deaf customer in today. I was able to sign a few phrases to him. I felt super awkward but he looked so happy that I could even sign at all. So thank you so much for doing what you’re doing because I am able to put my foot in the door and experience the world in a different way!!

If youre trying to learn sign language READ THIS. Wright down the word or sentance you eant to learn and constantly go back and fo the signs. For example you can write down 7 words or sentances then go back and do all of them then continue writing. Works for me. Ive been doing that for a year now I can have conversations with my friend

Hi. I’ve always wanted to learn asl. And I looked at the alphabet online and started to learn it. My daughters stopped what they were doing and just watched me. “Dad, what’s that?” They asked. I told them once what the letters are and they soaked it up like a sponge. So me and my two girls are slowly learning asl. And the best part is we really don’t need it. Neither of us knows anyone who is hard of hearing or deaf. But the three of us truly believe it’s the best language to know. Though some things confuse me, like the different ways of saying the same thing. For instance “why” is signed two ways that I learned just yesterday. But soon I’ll start using it around the house to imprint it better in our minds. Anyway. Thanks again for these videos. I’ll be back to give you an update someday. Sam

Hi there, I see you posted this a while ago so I don't know if you're still looking for an answer to your question, but I'm learning and my teacher explained it like this: there's a few reasons you might see different signs to say the same thing. One is that there are older and newer signs, like how in English there are old words, for example, the words Shakespeare uses, and there are more modern words that we would prefer to use. Another reason is that one sign may have multiple general English interpretations or vice versa. For example, you might say "bathroom" "restroom" "toilet" etc all referring to the same general place or idea. There are also regional differences. My teacher has shown us that in the Midwest we would sign "pizza" different than the east coast, like how in English people in different parts of the country might say "soda" "pop" or "coke". Sorry this is so long, I hope it makes sense.

I want to learn sign language. People that are deaf, usually don't have very many IRL (In real life) friends. I would love to be friends with a deaf person, because if you don't give them a chance just because they're deaf, YOU are the one missing out. You and the deaf person could have a lot in common! My GF is deaf, we went from writting on everything we could find to I just had to sit down and learn and here's the best way to do it. ONE SIGN AT A TIME don't push it will come to you, ASL is more logical than the English spoken versions. Once you sign, you'll never stop. Oh last tidbit NEVER sign with a fork, spoon or knife in your hand. Fun times :)

I managed to learn from this a while back and yesterday I had two deaf customers who were completely lost with the concept of the restaurant I work at. Ive learned so much. I try to watch almost every day. I work with special needs students who are deaf. I want to be a better communicator with them. I ve watched people move their hands that would suggest that these people were signing. I had no idea what they are saying. I have learned a little over 100 words fluently. Need to work more on my finger spelling and recognizing finger spelled words and work on numbers more too. Not sure if I'll ever have the chance to met a deaf person, but I'm really enjoying learning to sign and interpret.

A long time ago we had an uncle in the family that was deaf-mute. He spent his school years in Jacksonville Illinois. Me and a few other cousins were taken on adventures under the care of our uncle Donny, camping, fishing and boating. We had a large family and most could communicate with Donny to one degree or another. The last of his life he lived in the St Paul Minnesota area and was teaching Vietnamese refugees ASL that needed it. He passed many years ago. I learned a lot from Donny, especially patience and how to be a good person. I enjoy watching these videos, they bring back memories. I know the alphabet very well the other stuff not as much. The main thing I remember when he taught me sign was how exacting to be .

I rallye appreciate that you take the time to do side views and especially the explanations of what the hand shape is using basic letters and numbers hand shapes. There are many instructional videos out there on basic ASL signing, but so often it's just not clear what exactly the hand shape is supposed to look like since the front view blocks parts of it. It's also been helpful to realize that a lot of the signs build on the basic alphabet and numbers, makes it less overwhelming when trying to figure out if my fingers are correctly positioned.

Hi Ashely...you might not ever read this comment because this video is almost 2 years old but I am going to write it anyway! I teach Kindergarten at a public school in San Diego that has a DHH program. I have worked there for 8 years and have learned some very basic signs. But this year I have 3 deaf students in my class who use an interpreter and my desire to learn ASL has grown because I hate not being able to talk to them myself. I stumbled upon your videos after doing a youtube search for ASL Lessons. I just wanted to tell you that your videos are the best and I have loved learning sign from you. I'm studying in a special high school (currently grade 10) and Teacher's Day is approaching. To give the teachers a break,grade 10 students were asked to substitute and I was assigned as one of the teachers who teaches deaf students.The teacher said we could just right what we want to say on the board but as I got to be with them (students) they seemed excited and happy and I wondered why.And I thought "Maybe because this is the time they get to interact with someone who is not deaf." I'm learning ASL for one of my students! Believe it or not, English is her THIRD language (behind ASL and Cambodian). She has an interpreter in my classroom, but I want to be able to communicate with her and learn how to speak her language for once. Thank you for the videos!!!

i have never met a deaf person or anyone who knows or use sign language, but i just decided one day that i want to learn it. i just wish i knew someone who uses sign language so i could practice
