ASL should be taught in schools on the elementary level that way we all can communicate with those who have to use it, that way there is no more languags barrier.

@@publicadventures you remember how to read and write, therefore being taught ASL all through elementary would ingrain this type of language in you as well. Children have excellent memory, and learning ASL from a young age will increase ASL as a core language for all people. It will become an innate pathway of communicate that is natural without thought. Just like how you can write, spell & read without too much thought.

Unfortunately if no one around you is able to sign it won't really help. I figure if I ever lose so much hearing that hearing aids don't help me anymore I'll just text with people. Even though my younger sister has actually lost more hearing than I have, no one in our family knows sign, so texting back and forth would be the easiest way to go. Plus we'll still be able to talk, since we grew up hearing. If you really think you want to use sign, try to get some family members to learn with you.

Hey, i see it's been 9 months since you wrote this so maybe you are at the point where you have become deaf. I don't know what the people around you have made you feel like neither do I know what it must feel like or how I'm going to make you feel but I just hope you believe that this is not something for others to pity you or sympathize you about. It is alright and this will be a world you will slowly start exploring now. Finding various other ways of communication, although people would never let go of the opportunity to make you feel lesser than them. I just hope you know that it is the f world that is not inclusive enough and you are still perfect, as perfect a human can be. My neighbor came and dropped a package off to me that had mistakenly been delivered to her address. She's deaf and her eyes LIT UP when I was able to communicate with her in sign, even though it was INCREDIBLY rudimentary and I'm not very good (yet). She understood me and I understood her and it was an incredible experience. Thank you for helping me to have a conversation with my neighbor.

Hi! ASL is being counted as a foreign language credit, depending on the school of course. High schools are offering ASL, mostly in the bigger cities/towns and high schools are also connecting with local community colleges to allow students to learn ASL there. It’s happening!

My 3yr old Nephew recently lost his hearing. He was perfectly fine and then in a span of about 2 weeks he just went completely deaf. This is the first ASL video I've checked out. It makes me feel like I really can learn it. I don't ever want to not be able to communicate with him.

I recently had a deaf customer with two deaf children. I felt so bad that I couldn't sign to her. It made the whole experience very hard for all of us. I came home that evening ready to cry. bro same, I work at Starbucks and when to gets busy it gets very stressful. Normally were able to greet everyone that walks in and be aware but it was so busy, after it cooled down the same guy I saw stand to the side for about 30-45 minutes came up to write something saying he didn't want to wait up the line. The whole time we just thought he was looking around, anyways I marked his order as one of my lunch markouts, hope next time see him I can surprise him😀

My Wife and I are learning ASL together. I feel like we both contribute to each other's learning. I speak two languages currently, and learning the unspoken language of ASL. It's amazing to be able to communicate in different ways. I agree with what another user said, Schools should definitely teach ASL. It's very rewarding in it's own way.

@@Kim.K.Edwards It honestly depends on the person. I found Duolingo for Second Languages is very informative and structured to make learning fun and simple. As for ASL, I learned through many apps and watched KZbin videos. Truthfully, With the Internet being what it is, Learning a language can be just as easy compared to learning how to do just about anything else. It takes time, And commitment, But once you start it's like riding a bike. At least for me anyways... 😂

As a complete beginner this is definitely more complex then it seems when you have to take into account many numerous gestures and hand positioning. This is definitely something that needs to be taught on a larger scale, even if its just the basics.

This should seriously be a MANDATORY subject in school. Like instead of teaching us stuff that we might not ever need in the adult world, they should teach us sign language so we can communicate with hearing impaired people. ASL should count as wayyy more important than other curriculum.If you run into a deaf person anytime in your life you could make them feel comfortable communicating with them. I once read a post that really blew my mind about ASL, it was nothing special but it went something along the lines of someone was going scuba diving for the first time and in their group they had a deaf person and someone that could also sign but could hear, and it occurred to them that while everyone would be underwater, those 2 were the only ones who would still be able to talk to each other. Since then I've been thinking of picking of sign language, maybe not for any honorable purpose like getting closer to someone in my family or wishing to teach others, but simply to know. Even slower isn’t enough. She didn’t address the ‘you’, just ‘see’ and ‘later’; she didn’t address her finger positions around the eye for ‘see’. She didn’t have the 5 things to watch out for displayed while going through it. My hearing is going downhill fast - this video left me so frustrated and with a terrible headache….I stopped at the second sign for either ‘see you later’, or with the skipped ‘you’ and only ‘see’ and ‘later. Didn’t even address how the second phrase to be signed was for proper ASL syntax, or not.

My 18 month old isn’t talking so I taught him the sign “done/finished” so he could tell me he was done eating and wanted out of his highchair. To my surprise he immediately learned it and uses it every time he is done eating. I’m teaching him more signs and he picks them up so quickly. It’s interesting he won’t use verbal language but latched onto signs so fast.

My 6 yr old son is 100% nonverbal. He's never said a single word and has rejected all forms of communication up until a couple months ago when he started showing some interest in signing. He's now able to sign a small variety of words and is still learning more. I think our happiest moment was the first time he signed I love you to his dad and I. It was the first time in his life he could actually say I love you back to us. He has severe stage 3 autism so he's delayed with his learning and has a lot of difficulty doing certain things. He can't just do a sign a few times and be good at it. Things are much harder for him because of his autism and literally every single time he does a sign he has to look at his hands and think hard about what fingers go where. It's like he has no muscle memory or something. He's trying so hard though and we couldn't be more proud of him! We had such a warped view of autism when he was first diagnosed. I knew of one child that had it and they had horrible behavior problems, we're violent, never slept etc. I only ever heard negative things about this poor child which is sad. So when we got the diagnosis that it was autism and he had the most severe form I expected the worst and boy was I ever wrong. My son is the sweetest most happiest little boy I have ever met. He loves sleeping and tells us every night in a nonverbal way that it's bed time and he sleeps all night. Even when he wakes up he won't wake us up until about 9ish. He's obsessed with photography and cars. His favorite thing to do is stand at the window watching traffic and taking pics of each vehicle that passes. He will do this for ours if we let him. He's just such an incredible child and we wouldn't change a thing about him. His lack of communication has always made me sad but now that he finally is able to sign some, we couldn't be more happier. It's amazing how something so simple can completely transform your life!

When I was expecting my child. I read that teaching toddlers sign language can cut down temper tantrums due to not being able to communicate. It worked! By her 1st b-day she signed about 10 words that made a huge difference. 🤟🏾 AMAZING! She's 13 now and we keep using and learning sign language. New parents absolutely should try ASL.

Recently a new student sat with me and my friends at lunch. He speaks fluently in Russian, and only some English and ASL. I was able to say hello, and then my friends and I were goofing around and saying "my name is hungry" and "GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT grandfather/grandmother" to him. It was really nice since he seemed to enjoy laughing with us, even though he wasn't able to fully understand. I can't imagine what it would be like to move to a new school and not be able to understand much of what anyone was saying, and I'm so glad he was able to have fun today

I've been schooled in French, modern Greek, Spanish, German (speak, read, and write in all of those), and ASL (signing, glossing, and interpreting). I've also learned Italian, Russian, and Japanese. English is my native language. There's always room for yet another language.

My nephew was in kindergarten he just wouldn’t talk. We later learned he has autism. He was incredibly bored and always in trouble walking around the classroom when the kids were learning it and the. He was at 5th grade reading level. His teacher recognized that he was using sign language as he walked around the room. One of the books he would read at home was a child’s book on sign language.

Growing up there was a deaf family living next to me. And I was absolutely obsessed with being able to connect with the child that was about my age. At 10 years old I taught myself sign language. To the point to where once at church I signed what a wonderful world completely in sign language. Now I’m 31 and can’t remember anything. Thank you for this video. I’m trying to learn again.

It would be nice if she signed what she was saying when she is talking. Knowing the alphabet and numbers is good, too. It is also important to know that the deaf do not generally use articles of speech and that many signs are contextual.

I don't really know any deaf people, but sometimes my thoughts get confused and it's hard for me to talk and making sings help me focus. I figured that I could learn some ASL in case I ever need to help a deaf person and help myself talk smoothly.

When I was about 2, I suddenly just stopped talking. This was what lead to me being diagnosed with autism. I eventually started talking again, but during the time I was nonverbal, I learned some sign language. I still remembered the signs for “more”, “apple”, “thank you” and “all done” after all this time, but I still want to learn more because not only is it a useful thing to know, it’s also fun! 😊

I'm autistic, too; I talked late (and, once I started talking, it took some time to get to the point where people outside of my family could understand me well), so I only signed for a couple years. I can talk most of the time now, although I'm often told that I speak too quickly, and I still default to signing or texting when I'm nonverbal.

My 3rd grade teacher was actually HoH and she taught all her students the ASL alphabet and used it to quickly see our answers for multiple choice questions. She also had us hold up the sign for r so she didn't have to ask us what we needed. She could just see it very easily and tell that kid to go to the restroom. Unfortunately I only went to that school for the one year and ended up forgetting a lot of what she taught me. However my little sister ended up going to the same school and the school had all the kids sign the lyrics to the songs for their performances which I really appreciated because its such a small thing but means so much.

My brother was born with down syndrome and he can only communicate with sign language so I'm very grateful this channel exists. It's tough not being able to connect or communicate with him so I'm learning this for him and hopefully anyone else that relies on this form of communication that I may cross paths with in the future. So grateful a friend recommended LHTS. These videos are simple to watch and very informative. I took ASL in elementary and absolutely loved it. It was easier for me to comprehend and learn what my teacher was saying, because not only was I hearing it, but I was also seeing it as well. Unfortunately, the school no longer offered it the further I went up in grades. I have five small children and my husband, and I are teaching them how to sign. We believe it's important to know another language, but also to be able to speak to the deaf.

When I was in elementary school in Japan, I learnt sign. All of pupils had so many opportunities to learn sign because we had a couple of deaf kids. Lile when we sing songs as a part of an event, everyone interprets the lyrics while singing etc. Now I feel I should learn ASL!

If you learn the alphabet along with these 25 signs, you're well on your way! If you don't know a sign, you can spell the word. These 25 are a large part of the signs I used with a deaf family member.
