Don't do another calculation before you understand SIGNIFICANT FIGURES! Essential.

By rounding intermediate results you're introducing an additional source of error. Ideally we should round only the final result. Sure, when doing calculations manually on paper we probably won't write a lot of digits after the significant one, but it shouldn't necessarily be just 1 non-significant digit - the more the better.

What grade level is this?

Hi Curt! Good question. We made this video as part of our Chemistry series, which is appropriate for students of chemistry in high school and college. But this subject of significant figures often comes up earlier, in students' first science class in high school. Most students struggle with this concept, and so it gets repeated often, usually in the beginning of every science class from Freshman year in high school all the way through college. :) Thanks for watching!

Thanks, I was just wondering because I didn't graduate from high school. When teachers started talking about this stuff I lost interest real quick and started thinking about other things lol.

Does 10.0632 contain six sig figures? I have this serious doubt🤔
@ExplainIttoMe_16 жыл бұрын
Me 18 Yes, you’re correct. Non-zero digits are significant and zeros in between non-zero digits are also significant.

Have you guys done many economics videos? I also enjoyed those videos on some of the states!
@Socratica8 жыл бұрын
We haven't tackled economics yet, but we will one day! Our cofounder, Michael Harrison, is a mathematician and a former "quant" (quantitative analyst) so he has some plans to cover that subject in the future. Thanks for watching!! :)

How about a little lesson in Morse Code? 😄
@Socratica8 жыл бұрын
That's so funny you mention that! We've been thinking about a video on Morse Code for a while! We have the audio files for each letter, but we are still in the script stage. Thinking about a fun way to teach it...We like the idea of including it in a short series about codes/ code breaking. Thanks for watching! :)

huffman coding gives a nice justification for morse code and leads nicely into cryptanalysis of simple substitution ciphers

Great idea. I love the idea of using a Huffman Tree.
