Oh my god THANK YOU. I knew significant figures were easy, but I had such a hard time applying sig fig rules to mixed operations. This really helped me understand what was happening and how to track my progress to come up with the right amount of sig figs in my answer. I can't thank you enough!

If you rounded the product of the first step calculation to an answer with no decimals/digits of precision. Then rounded the answer from the second calculation step of addition, the answer would be 25. But, you shouldn't round a calculation twice during a problem. The rounding is done in the final calculating step of the problem.

I counted the least number of sig fig in the question And used it To detrmind how many sig fig the answer should be Am I Correct ?
@Plastik134 жыл бұрын
No, it would be 26. 13 + 12.690 = 25.69 so 26.

This is the first confusion that comes to my mind with every textbook and every teacher that explains "these are the rules for mult/div, and these are rules for add/sub. Got that everyone??" Oh yeah, sure that, makes sense, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MORE COMMON CASE WHERE THEY ARE MIXED?? Nobody seems to explain this, and it shouldn't be that hard.

At 2:33, he writes a 13 under the 12, which may give the impression that he is rounding up during an intermediate step. I'm sure that was not his intention. You do not do any rounding during the solving of an equation. You only do that at the very end.
@SiyabongaMsimango-kv7sc4 ай бұрын
What happened with 13 why didn't we use it as it is?

If we're "actually only working with 13," why did you write out 25.3796?
@theblitz16874 жыл бұрын
you still do the rounding at the final, but he just wanted to show how that 0dop number behave like and that is 13,(edit: focus being that it has 0dop so answer will be also 0dop, but rounding is left for final)

My college TA got this part of sig figs wrong, and she won't admit it no matter what I show her
@xje19814 жыл бұрын
I’m curious why the answer to the first problem wouldn’t be 25. (with a decimal but nothing after the decimal, indicating precision to the decimal). Both of the figures had decimals indicating precision. Otherwise without the decimal the number is ambiguous. Am I not understanding something?
@avrilrincon22513 жыл бұрын
you're correct, the number can be ambiguous but for our purposes, we assume that it is in fact the value of 25. however, yes the more formal way to show the answer is adding the decimal, for the purpose of the video he was just trying to reinforce that there were zero decimals of precision.

Matthew Ryan Prnka, You lost me at 3:14. Can go into more depth as to why you are making your decisions?
Hi Matthew, can you help me with my confusion for this situation where 2000 - 32.43. Do you think the solution is 2000 or 1968?
@ktkc1o73 жыл бұрын
It depends if the 3 zeros in 2000 count as significant figures or not. If 2000. is written like this with a decimal after it, then yes, they count as sig figs. Otherwise, no they don't count and the solution is 2000 written without a decimal. Everything is more clear when you use scientific notation. 2 x 10^3 has one sig fig. 2.000 x 10^3 has four sig figs. Hey, now you can also show 2.0 x 10^3 and 2.00 x 10^3! You can't do that without scientific notation.
