Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I agree that it's important to find a consistent way signing etc. I like to put the year, but I do feel your point about selling a piece with last years date. I keep it simple using a simple woodturning pen that I rounded the tip on the grinder to my preferred size and shape. Name, species, and year, top to bottom for me. Thanks again, and happy Easter!

Date for personal use..not for selling..good advice..only if you have a following of yearly ornate for example..then the date is important to the buyer. I.learned alot from this video. I was using a burn symbol for my beginning work, personal use.

Mike , Thank you for a very detailed , and thorough explanation of signing your work . I also have handed out short document which describes how to care for your wood keepsake . BE GOOD TO YOUR WOOD … A little care goes a long way toward maintaining your wooden bowls, cutting boards, and utensils. Get to know your wood! Being organic, wooden items require a little more care than metal or plastic. A properly cared-for bowl may be used for soup, pasta, ice cream, or salad without staining or cracking. Store your bowls in a dry, cool area and oil them occasionally or when they begin to "feel dry". Hand wash them in warm, soapy water using a mild soap. Rinse and dry them thoroughly, and then oil them lightly if needed with mineral oil . Never soak your bowl in water or leave it in the sink where water may splash into it and stand. Likewise, never put it in the dishwasher, microwave, or conventional oven as this subjects it to extreme heat and moisture, both of which can cause significant damage. Through proper care, your wooden bowls will develop a warm, rich patina and become family heirlooms that members of your family will treasure for generations. Charles Brown

Thanks Mike. Comprehensive, apart from ordinary punches, which I use. Of course care is necessary, but inserts allow versatility: and very clean. Yours is the first channel I look for each week. Bernard, Cheshire, England.

Iv'e just reached the one year as a turner and now produce pieces that are 'acceptable'. It has been on my mind for the past month or so, about should I, and how to sign my work. You have given me a good insight and think I will try the Pyro graph wood burning pen. Thanks Mike you are a great inspiration for me.

Mike, thanks for the informative video. I normally don't sign Christmas Tree ornaments as it is difficult to make it look good. I just include a business card.

Mike, very informative for which I thank you. I use wooden disc inserts which I print on with a cheap laser printer I found on Amazon. Once printed the disc can be sealed using anything you have to hand before its glued in place. I like this because its a standard logo and looks neat and clean. However I take you point fully about limited info.

Just now found this tip, trick and technique. What burner and tips do you use currently? Any in your Amazon store?
@MikePeaceWoodturning3 жыл бұрын
I do not see any on Amazon that I am familiar with. The Razertip availabel at Woodcraft is recommended a lot. I use an Optima which is quite similar but a bit cheaper I bought mine here gregdorrance.com/product/optima-1-dual-wood-burner-w-2-pens/ and have probably had it for almost 10 years.

I liked your video very much. I checked on an Optima pen burning unit similar to yours probably just a newer model on amazon 162.99 $. I am new at turning (just under a year) and I just can't afford to spend that kind of money to put my name on a piece.
@MikePeaceWoodturning6 жыл бұрын
I agree. If that is all you would use the pen for, just use an archival pen until you decide to move up perhaps to an engraver. I bought my unit after a class with Cynthia Gibson and thought I might use more woodburning to embellish my work. Didn't happen. I did use it for my Zentangle chess board in an earlier video on chess piece making.

Mike; I include THREE business cards with my pens. One has contact information, one has material and care info, one has pen details, pull apart vs unscrew, & ink fill replacement. Thanks for the video...

Wow, that is a lot of good info for the customer. I only have one business card with my address, phone numbers and website address. I guess if I sold a lot of stuff I would have one without my home address on it.

Thanks Mike- just looked at your other video and saw more of the pyro tip you mentioned which works well for writing. Need now to try making a ball shaped tip for my Peter Child’s burner as I’ve got some wire reels. The pre-made tips aren’t easy to get in the UK. Thx for the input!

Thanks Mike. I bought a branding iron and you are right, it doesn’t work on bowl bottoms. The surface has to be dead flat. Perhaps a round iron would work, but my rectangle one sure doesn’t.

Excellent video, Mike. I ordered a Topchances woodburner from W..M... for less than $60. Curious if you have any info about that one. My artistic skills are nonexistant and my handwriting is worse so I have tried laser engraving with excellent results. But it is limited to flat surfaces that can fit under the machine. Have you considered a laser engraver? There are some very inexpensive units available from China.
@MikePeaceWoodturning6 жыл бұрын
I just looked it up. Looks like WM sells for less than Amazon. Amazon reviews were only so so with 25% giving it a one rating. I see it is made in China. The Optima and its slightly more expensive cousin, the Razertip are made in North America. Hope it works out for you since it is considerably cheaper than its more expensive competitors previously mentioned. Let us know how it works out.

If you want to date your work but not let it be immediately apparent that it was made last year, use Roman numerals. For example instead of 2018 use MMXVIII. Most people don't even realize it's a date mark and it also adds a little bit of mystery to the piece.

I don't see my work as art. This is only a hobby to me so no need to sign. I am the only one that will see it. But that is just MY point of view, no problem with others signing their work.
