By the way, they came to a planet with 70% water because they were harvesting people, not planets. It's kind of a quick line mentioned on the radio broadcast so a lot of people miss it. But it's the same reason we'll risk hostile environments for specific resources too.

It's no secret that Mel Gibson is a devoutly religious man. So for him to portray a man of the cloth who's lost his faith is very powerful. The aliens in the movie are really just a device to drive the narrative. But I think the real story is the youngsters who played his kids. They were terrific in their respective roles, very believable. I enjoy watching this movie anytime I come across it.

When they showed that video of the Mexican kids all upset, and then in an instant the alien crossed the opening to that alley, the kids all screamed - my entire body clenched and goosebumps just washed over my entire body. Creepy, exhilarating and fascinating all in a short 5-10 second clip. I know this movie has its detractors, and it has some definite plot holes, but I loved the way Shamalayan toyed with the idea that this was all probably a hoax, or a misunderstanding - only for the brutal reality to finally be revealed. Movies don;t have to be perfect for me to enjoy them, and I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out, and all the girls in the audience had the same reaction as Dasha did at 17:20 when the alien first appears 😂 It was hard to not to get a little teary-eyed watching Dasha cry, she's such an empathetic soul. I would say the aliens came here to harvest our resources, as the little boy said was likely. Earth is teeming with life and all the things necessary to sustain it, and that would probably be a rarity in the galaxy. That would make it worth the risk for them to come to a planet with so much water. Btw M. Night Shyamalan plays Ray, the guy responsible for the accident that killed Graham's wife, and Rory Culkin, brother of Macaulay Culkin from "Home Alone", plays the son.

"Earth is teeming with life and all the things necessary to sustain it, and that would probably be a rarity in the galaxy. That would make it worth the risk for them to come to a planet with so much water." Jonathang9705. Yes! That was my take. And why it was an interesting juxtaposition to have the action of this invasion that, also in my opinion, deals with a hostile alien race seeing a planet full of harvestable bounty and going for it despite the water hazards, which may be why all the signs and attacks were typically not near any sizable bodies of water, and have the invasion seen through the eyes of a family that lives on a farm where their corn crop looks like it was nearly ready to be harvested. Coincidental ironic symmetry? I admit, the first time I watched it, while I enjoyed it, immensely, I found it a bit simplistic. But in rewatching, I think I began to see a more complex weave to the pattern. The alien weren't looking to inhabit a conquered world, they were simply pillaging what they considered a primitive, easily exploitable target planet. Although, I still have to wonder. Despite their advanced knowledge of interplanetary spaceflight, and all the incredible science they had at their fingers because of it, did they never have a need before of something as simple as a hazmat suit? I mean, why are so many otherwise highly technically advanced alien visitors always seemingly naked?

The Aliens aren't afraid of water, it's not what they're weak against. It's a common misconception but the movie actually has an explanation for along with everything else but tends to get forgotten as the movie goes along. Remember, clues are often hidden in plain sight for some of his movies. There was an old Sci-Fi channel featurette that had the cast and director talking about the making of the movie and in that, the director explained that the movie was somewhat inspired by "Wars of the Worlds" and in that movie, the aliens were taken down by microscopic organisms like germs and disease. For this movie, he wanted to tell a similar story but have it focus on a small rural family away from the major invasions happening everywhere else. The resources they sought out in both films are the humans themselves. They were harvesting us. With this in mind, you can take everything presented in this movie, no matter how innocuous and determine why water was something they were "weak" against. Well, anytime the little girl Bo would leave a glass of water somewhere, people would ask why, and she would respond with the reason. "There's something in the water", "Morgan took a sip and it's got his amoebas in it" she was literally explaining what was in the water.

So in regards as to why does water hurt them, and why they would invade a world with literal oceans, I recommend watching Roanoke Gamings breakdown of it. He does a really good breakdown of the potential genetics that would cause this bizarre weakness as well as a few guesses as to why they invaded. But the short version is essentially these beings evolved on a world with mostly desert like conditions. This led to their cells having a much thinner inner cell wall to allow for a greater level of moisture absorption since water would be scarce and their cells would need to hold as much as possible in response to this. As a consequence though, when hit by a larger amount of water at one time, the cells become overloaded and pop. This can happen with our cells as well, but having evolved on a world with lots of water, it takes a lot more over a longer period of time to come close to anything like that. As to why they invaded, look no further than the way humanity operates. We routinely find ways to live in environments that simply were not meant to support our, or quite frankly most species. Arctic biomes being a decent example. This would naturally carry over to our exploration and colonization of other worlds. If we found a near perfect world that for example suffered from heavy acid rainfalls, we wouldn't wait hundreds or thousands of years for the environment to change, we would still move in, and figure out how to fix it later. The aliens could look at things from a similar standpoint. Move in, fix the problems later. Even more so if they really had run out of resources on their own world and had become desperate for a solution. There is also a fan theory that personally I don't get behind but I at least find interesting and that is the "aliens" are actually demons. Considering the heavy theme of belief, higher powers, destiny, etc. that the movie revolves around, this theory isn't a major stretch. It also covers the water issues. The water in his home is automatically holy water due to his faith. That is why it hurts the demons. And since the majority of the planet's water isn't holy water, they have nothing to fear from lakes, oceans, rain, etc.

The radio was saying that the aliens did not come to take the planet, but rather to harvest the humans. What they were doing with the humans was a mystery, but the aliens in War of the Worlds were also harvesting humans in that story. There also have been fan theories over the years that the aliens in Signs were not from outer space, but were actually demons. As such, that would give alternate explanations for the human harvesting and aversion to water.

Dasha, you should Google the word "McGuffin" which is something that drives the plot of a story forward without actually being important. In my opinion, M Night used the aliens as a McGuffin. They drove the story forward, but in the end, they weren't really important to the story. That's why the reasons the aliens (who are harmed/burned by water) came to a planet that is 70% water isn't explored - it wasn't important. What WAS important was how facing the events helped the family, and especially Graham, heal from the trauma of losing the mother. It's not an alien invasion movie. It's a healing movie disguised as an alien invasion movie. And in my opinion THAT is what makes the movie so ingenious.

As for the water plot, it's not as stupid as everyone might think. If we found out that a planet made of gold had oceans of lava, you can be sure there would still be some people who would try to harvest that planet. It also happens all in 3 days and they also targeted dry places to land. We dont know what was the purpose, exploration? abduction? If it's dangerous for them, it makes sense that everything was done quickly. Still, it doesn't matter with the movie as everything is about faith.

If you take the religious perspective since faith is a component of the movie, there is a theory that they weren't aliens but rather demons since the water acts like like holy water. It's said Bo was special, like an angel so she was "blessing" the water when she took a sip. I don't know if it's worth getting to far into because the point of the movie is personal redemption and restoration of hope and faith for the lead character.

The neighbor that hit his wife was played by M Night. He is one of those that likes to cameo on their own movies. He is also the pediatrician in Sixth Sense. My theory on choosing Earth, although the aliens have a reaction to our water, life generally needs water. They came here for our "resources" which likely includes our food. They probably run in to this problem a lot so they just try to stay away from significant water sources.

This is one of the creepiest alien invasion flicks ever. That scene in the alley gives me goosebumps every time I see it. Great job on M.K.S.’s name pronunciation! Imo, this is his best movie, even better than “The Sixth Sense.” The feeling of low key dread is crazy. It’s been several years since I’ve seen this movie and the dog barking at the kids made me jump. The irony here is that, two days ago there were Congressional hearings with whistleblowers testifying that the US has aliens and nobody seems to care. Dammit Dasha! You had me jumping outta my skin! Lol Admittedly, the whole water thing is weak, but we’re not supposed to ask.

this movie had a serious psychological effect on my siblings and I as kids. I grew up in a rural area surrounded by nothing but cornfields and thick forests. you didn't want to go outside at night unless you absolutely had to. Still to this day I only go outside armed.

I was either 11 or 12 when this movie came out, and OBSESSED with aliens and crop circles. My parents dropped me off at the theater and I saw this. The lady next to me jumped and screamed so hard when the alien came out of the bush she spilled all of her popcorn on me. I wasn't even mad. Free popcorn lol

"Why did they put aliens in it?" Often, you'll find, in horror movies that the surface-level threat or horror is often a stand-in for something far more primal or intrinsic to the human experience. It gives us something to project our own thoughts and instincts onto for the sake of exploring the darker sides of ourselves. In this case, the external threat is the invading alien force, and the deeper plot is that of losing faith and family bonds. Will they be able to pull together and unite through shared faith in signs? Or will Graham succumb to grief and anger over his loss and be doomed to repeat it? It's one of the reasons I personally love the horror genre. There are things more frightening than monsters and ghosts, and all of them exist in our own human nature. To know fear is to steel ourselves from it. To borrow from my other favorite genre, sci-fi, and specifically, Frank Herbert: “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

Aliens are never just aliens in books or movies. Rather, they are metaphors. Sometimes they might be Russians as they often were during the Cold War. In The Day the Earth Stood Still, Klaatu was a reaction to the fear of nuclear weapons--he came to shut that stuff down, just as many people wanted to stuff that particular nuclear genie back in the bottle. Dracula was about sexual desire. Godzilla and his crew were a reaction to the nuclear attacks on Japan. Which makes it interesting that Godzilla eventually became an ally of Japan. The Blob, The Thing, Them, It, they were all fear of the natural world fuelled by cold war paranoia. ET was like a child wandering off after a butterfly. Aliens are never just aliens. They are always a reflection of something bubbling in the culture.
