My favorite Shyamalan movie. That dinner table scene just crushes me everytime. No one can play devestation like Mel Gibson, and in that scene he is a man terrified for his family, but he has no choice but to be the strong one and hold it all together. The heartbreak in his eyes over it all always gets me (especially when his son says that he hates him).

@@WoahLookAtThatFreak - Signs is my personal favorite; I just enjoy it for a number of reasons. The Sixth Sense I do think is a better film overall, if you're asking me for a ranking. If I'm trying to get someone to jump into Shyamalan's work, I will mention Signs, but it probably won't be the first movie I tell them to watch (it would depend on the person). I'm more than happy to differentiate, especially with movies, that there can be a difference between someone's favorite movie and what is the best movie.

Honestly, they could be seen as either demons or aliens. He left it ambiguous for a reason. There never is any kind of official explanation of what is happening and many of the tropes are cut more from a supernatural film than an alien invasion. For instance, Mel's character talks about his little girl being born an angel and she leaves water all over the place that we later find out burns the invaders, not unlike holy water that we've seen in vampire and/or demonic possession films a few hundred times. The voices coming through the radio and the inability to use doors is really nothing new to the supernatural genre either. Plus you hear a guy talking on the radio about how they used primitive or ancient methods (in the Middle East?) to fight off the invaders (I forget how its actually worded), and when you couple that with the fact that Mel's character ends up finding his faith again leads me to believe those were demons because the ending never made sense to me when I thought it was an alien invasion flick. @@jfish0723

I also think that he was purposely directed to act a little crazy/seem like a goofball. We don’t realise it upon first viewing, but he gives away what is about to happen in the third act. The audience doesn’t take him seriously because he seems crazy, but after we watch the movie a second time the scene comes across very differently!

Shyamalan can be such a mixed bag. It's crazy because in between a lot of silliness in his movies, there are moments of profound beauty and incredible emotional depth. but then he pulls some hack-y crap in the third act that just frustrates the hell out of me. He would be truly great if he weren't trying so hard to either cram some kind of message down your throat or pull some big twist at the end of his movies. it's like ok, you hit a home-run with 6th Sense, but stop trying to chase that lightning in a bottle over and over. it's kinda like how obsessed george lucas got about the idea of the 2nd movie in a trilogy having to be "dark."

The scene where they say goodbye to the wife, was filmed the very morning of 9/11. Like, it literally happened just minutes before they started filming. So the entire mood during those scenes is very real. There was a featurette where M. Night explains the movie is inspired by War of the Worlds so this explains why characters and shots are the way they are. It's not just an "ism", he picks these shots for a reason. This also explains the water thing. Because Bo states there's "something in the water" which rectifies the common misconception that their weakness is water when it isn't. I do think this movie is far better and more effective than people give it credit for. Most of his films are because they know what they are and aren't trying t be anything else. It's just a case of how well he tells that story. In fact I think he has more hits than misses in that regard. Also, Unbreakable is the best film. Objectively. 😋

It's a bit of a joke to be fair. That shot of the alien in Mexico on the home camera is hilarious. I always enjoyed the film, but you gotta laugh at some of the stuff in it. The premise itself is just mental. That an alien race with the technology to actually come here could be beaten by water within 24hrs of their attack beginning is pretty funny. Would they not have had a contingency?

To be fair, this was around the time that Night's writing style began to change. Certainly, there were aspects of the characters and their internal struggles that were quite good, but other parts tended to pull people out of the tension and laugh when it wasn't intended. Night does characters quite well but his dialogue tends to be over melodramatic to the point it's oddly funny.

@brownsey1 I disagree. I saw this in theaters when it came out. That moment scared everyone. We have to remember this movie is from over 20 years ago. I just think if you're going to watch a serious movie, give it the respect it deserves or don't bother. Especially for reaction content as you will be alienating a large portion of your base audience. It's absolutely okay to dislike a movie. Different strokes for different folks. This just felt really icky in my opinion.

@commanderwyro4204 As I said, would they not have had a contingency? They have the tech to get here, which means they are far more advanced than us. Surely they would have prepped for a planet that is 70% water since it's their cryptonite.

I disagree. I think the writing was great for everyone and love Phoenix's character. He washes out of having a career in the major league, only to be there, at the moment his extended family needa him. I love that this movie is about family and faith. No other director of the time was making major studio films like this. M Knight made several. To the point that when Hollywood finally figured it out. I truly believe insiders worked to sabotage his work and drum him from Hollywood.

I love how ANYBODY, no matter their personal spiritual beliefs, can appreciate the acting and the writing enough to be sad when a man of God loses his faith and then happy when he gets it back. I've seen more than one reactor start to make a religous joke or laugh at the idea of God, and then get emotional when they see what's really going on here, and truly happy for Graham when he starts believing again. I went to film school a long time ago and one of my professors went to graduate school with M. Night Shyamalan. He said that his student films were all terrible, and when he saw the Sixth Sense he couldn't believe it was the same guy. He theorized that he came up with the basic plot, but it was heavily modified by hollywood to be better. Then, once he got more famous he had a lot more control over his films and a lot less people changing his ideas, hence why his movies got decidedly worse through his career. My professor also mentioned that his parents tended to give him a lot of money to fund his movies because they were wealthy.

that rings true. I'll say though that I really like some of his newer stuff like Split and Glass.. as well as The Servant series. It just didn't blow my mind. I forget what came next, but it wasn't even as good as The Village. I feel like Split was the first good movie he had in a long time. And I think that's mostly due to James McAvoy and Anya Taylor Joy's acting.

So, here's the enlightening part. If you take Aang and the gang and Zuko and Iroh and the others and give them the tone and characterizations from Signs, it explains a lot about what Shyamalan did to The Last Airbender. That's why it's all dour and depressing and everyone is wooden and lifeless and the dialogue is all awkward. Airbender is exactly the movie Shyamalan was trying to make. There were no mistakes.

There were a ton of mistakes. Doing things on purpose doesn't mean they were done right.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The build up and the alien scares - especially the one in the closet - are genuinely superb. But that ending? The "swing away" nonsense and the alien death by water? Horrible.

yeah exactly. it's got some gems and some wackness and its up to you to decide how you feel about it.

M Night does like 1 good movie, then 3 bad ones. 1 good one, 3 bad ones. This was not a good one. thought the alien was tacky looking lol

The real twist is that the aliens are really angels and Maple was right! It was the Rapture! And the angels are made of heavenly marbled angel cake!

I really disliked this movie. The plot holes and the way it's shot kept me from enjoying almost ever scene. It does make sense to laugh through it, and not take it seriously.

Great reaction! This is an interesting movie! I would also really like to see your detailed reaction to the cult film Robocop 1987! Especially before the release of a new world game based on this movie. Do you have any plans to make a reaction to this film?🦾🔥
