Hey cockatiel fans!
This week's video is all about signs that our cockatiels show when they are unwell.
I've tried to cover most of the common ones. However there are many more and too many to fit in one quick fire video.
Many of these will apply to other parrot species too, but I found it useful to focus the video on cockatiels for context!
You know your parrots best, so it's so important to observe them, ensure they eat right and you note any changes. If you're ever concerned you should get advice from an Avian Vet!
As usual any comments or questions are welcome!

Yes absolutely, I have Squirt's vet on speed dial. Whenever she acts differently, I'll get her favorite treat and see if she wants it, because nothing keeps her from that. I'll have her fly to me and go through her routines and then do a poop 💩 check. If things are still not right, im calling her vet and her ver Dr.AnnBourke loves her she called her Squirty-birdie ❤️

Hi! I know this is a really late comment, but I got a lutino/cinnamon cross cockatiel. His name is Peep and he is a sweet bird. The petstore we got him from said that he was JUST weaned the day we got him, but they never sent us his hatch date which is sketchy. Ever since we got him he has been insanely quiet when he chirps. It's almost a raspy small chirp. He did have wheezing when we first got him and he did have a plugged nose which I gave him saline drops in the nose three times a day and he finally seemed a bit happier once that plugged up nostril cleared out. I looked at the reviews for the petstore and saw countless reviews saying they sell sick birds. My heart dropped in my chest and I decided to order him Doxycycline and administered it to him and our parakeets and gave them probiotics after. We have no avian vets in our area other than one that is over 3 hours away by car. So the medicine was our only option. He still has the quiet raspy chirp, but it can be louder when he wants out of his cage or wants something in general. He has progressively gotten a tiny bit louder but he doesn't whistle nor does he prefer to chirp loudly like I see everyone else's birds do. He seems healthy and eats and drinks a lot and sleeps an adequate amount. He plays and is just starting to try and fly (he has clipped wings) He chews on everything he can get his beak on and his eyes look clear. I try to sprinkle a small amount of seeds on the tile flooring for him to "forage" so he gets exercise too. Could he be near puberty and that's why he's raspy cause he's trying to learn to whistle? He has already gotten a little frisky on my head before which is pretty soon for his age cause the shop we went to said they wean their birds at 4 months of age and if he was just weaned it would be about four months of age I'm guessing? But everything I read said they hit that type of maturity around 9 months of age. We got him a month ago so he should be around 5 months of age. He does seem a bit fluffier than other cockatiels I see online but I never see him puffed up, so I wonder if maybe he's a bit overweight? I'm just concerned is all and want him to have a happy and healthy life. Thanks for looking at this comment and thanks for your time. I appreciate your videos and love watching them! They're very informative!

The voice thing would honestly be best checked out by a vet, they can vary in how they sound but it’s not something I can really advise on. You can send me a clip on Instagram and I can give an opinion but that’s about it. If he’s eating, going toilet, drinking, sleeping and active then those are all good signs! If you want to keep an eye on his weight then regularly weighing him is the best option! You can keep a base line and monitor how it goes.

@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Gina, Definitely. Olive did it when she had that issue a while back. They can tail bob normally when excited, after a poo or after lots of exercise. It's when they do it constantly and without any other factors influencing it that it can be a cause for concern.

I've recently noticed that my cockatiel has lost her feathers around both of her ears. She acts normal, but is there a reason to why the feathers are gone? I also have one more cockatiel in the same cage as her, we've noticed while they cuddle the other bird has been "biting" her cheeks and head, but I don't know if she's just cleaning her or if she's the one pulling the feathers off.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 ай бұрын
The other bird would be barbering her or over grooming her. I’d look at the reasons behind this and consider temporarily separating them if it becomes a health issue. It’s not uncommon for this to happen but it’s important it’s dealt with to avoid stress or health issues to both birds

@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Жыл бұрын
If she's eating, drinking, playing and going to the loo normally then it's less likely something's wrong. It would be worth monitoring her weight daily (there's aps that you can track it on) to see if there's any big decreases. What you've mentioned "CAN" be a sign of being ill, but can also be stress, hormonal changes etc If she becomes like that constantly I'd suggest a visit to an avian vet for a check up!

He has been sneezing a lot too but he is eating well. So if he was checked by an avian vet I can’t really contradict what they may have advised you! The best thing you can do is ensure he is taking the meds, eating, drinking and pooping normally and well! I’d also consider going back or calling them if you’re worried!

Hi I know its quite some time since you posted this video. But I'd be really grateful if you reply. So my cockatiel looked like he had trouble breathing so he's in medication and since these medicines started he's sleeping a lot and eating pellets but not too much of other food. He's drinking water too. He's just a little inactive. He doesn't looks sick. His feathers and eyes are as shiny as ever. I've noticed his poop being watery today. Do you think that he's sleepy due to antibiotics? I feel like I need to stop the medication...

Honestly in that scenario I'd take them in to an avian vet for a check up as that is not something usual. If he is active, eating, going poop etc normally then that's all awesome. But even if the voice issue isn't something harmful, it'd still be worth finding out why.

I don’t have easy access to vets due to me, being a 15 year old and can’t drive or anything, and just not having the money to pay for it. Also we don’t live close to one. I have a pet cockatiel, I’ve had her for about 5 years now and she’s my pride and joy. Her name is Lucio :) for basically all of the years I’ve own her (I got her when she was a baby old enough to feed herself) she’s had a plucking problem. So has her sister that is the same age and is owned by my brother. Both of their cages are the same, being pretty big but not a great big cage which would probably be best for them. Lucio has made me absolutely terrified and made me panic and cry so many times. She only really plucks under her wings and around her legs. Her legs and around her cloaca have been completely bare for years. She’s scared of new things, she only eats pellets and seed and sometimes millet when she’s been good :) she doesn’t like fruit, she does like lettuce sometimes when she remembers what it is. She hasn’t actually eaten lettuce in years. I tried giving her some apple but she didn’t eat it at all. She’s only got one toy and it was one of the very first toys she got. She has two straight perches and one of those concrete perches that she chews on. She also has a hoop toy that she sits and swings in. She also has a mirror that she licks and it’s cute. I’ve heard that mirrors are very bad for birds but idk she seems alright with it. She chews under her wings so much that sometimes it scabs up and she bleeds a small bit. Then when she flies she screams cause of her wings :( this has happened many times and many times I have legitimately believed that she is going to die and that I killed her by being a bad parent. I love her so much but my parents just don’t really care that much to actually help. It’s really hard sometimes but I do believe she is ok. I don’t think she’s stressed or anything, I just think the plucking has become a habit. My dad said that both Lucio and her sister are inbred so that makes them “low quality birds” and even if that’s true, I want her to live the best life. She loves me and I love her. But we just can’t afford everything to make her life as perfect and long as possible. I love that bird more than I love myself, she’s helped me through so much. Through my darkest times, she’s always been there for me and I just want to be there for her when she needs me as well. Idk, I don’t really know what the point of this comment was but I just really love birds and I just want Lucio to look a bit more happy and not die way earlier than she should. Any advice would be cool, I’ve read pretty much all that the front page of google has about cockatiels so if you have some new information that I don’t know about then hit me up lol idk. She is my very first bird also so I’ve got no prior experience with birds. Any tips would be nice if you actually care to read all of this :) thanks for your time
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Жыл бұрын
Righty, so it’s clear you care for your bird! I’m sorry that your parents aren’t willing to help out as I feel that it’s partly their responsibility if you take on a bird. Have you watched any of my other content? It may be useful to you and Lucio going forward in general and having a good relationship. So, about plucking. It can be a tough one to give advice on as it’s often very individual regarding the causes so we usually ask to do a consultation to find the reason and offer the owner help. We also usually advice a vet visit to eliminate any causes like mites or skin irritation etc. General advice wise, that is also affordable (especially if you save up a little) Make sure her cage is outfitted well, toys, high perches, bowls in the top 3rd and kept clean. Preening toys can especially help with plucking as they displace the behaviour if it’s hormonal or stress related. Avian teas can help lots, chamomile can also help and both are pretty affordable. I have a video about how to use them. Offering regular baths and misting can help if she’s ok with it. ( my moulting video had advice on it) I’d also look at her diet, some pellets can cause skin irritations. I hope this helps but sadly there’s only so much I can advise or do via a comment.

I'm sorry for commenting late but I just have a small concern. A lot of this video, and other advice on the internet, mention context and deciding whether or not the cockatiel's behaviour changed. However, my bird is new, I've only had him for a week and I know that he could be lonely/depressed because he was parent-fed growing up and shared a cage with 5 others. Also, he's still scared so it's too soon to begin taming him. This is why I can't be sure if his symptoms are just stress and loneliness or if he's actually sick. There's no avian vet in my city and I'm afraid that taking him to a normal vet would be fruitless and just stress him out more. He sits at the bottom of his cage often but eats, drinks and sleeps normally. He doesn't move around as much as he did in the first 4 days and the only thing he does on his perch is sit in the sleeping spot His droppings look normal? But I can never be too sure because it's my first bird pet

Thank you so much for your quick response and advice! The cage is big but it only has one perch so I ordered 3 more that would be more comfortable, I'm still waiting on them to arrive. The food is on the cage floor because whenever I'd try to hang it back in place, my cockatiel would get really angry and would scream until I put it back on the cage floor. He likes to stand inside of it so I assumed that this was the reason. He doesn't mind the water bowl being hung, he can comfortably reach it I thought he stood on the cage floor to eat but these two days, he'd stand there for 2-3 hours not necessarily eating I'll check out your other videos, thank you again!

If your cockatiel is having difficulty breathing the best advice is getting them to an avian vet as soon as you can. There isn’t much we can do at home aside from keep them warm, offer them food and water and try to see if there’s anything obvious going on.

I just got a cockatiel 1 day ago n she just keeps on pacing back N forth on her cage N not eat anything which I understand coz it's a new environment for her N she's anxious but she constantly paces back and forth N she's not really scared of my fingers too just just doesn't know step up or stay on my fingers much idk if her pacing is coz of stress or boredom and also she doesn't play with the toys I give her is it ok?
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Yuru, The pacing is likely stereotyping and down to anxiety and stress. It's to be expected as your cockatiel has just come home. The lack of toy play is also likely due to her not knowing her new environment and needing to settle in. Give her time, work on passive bonding through the bars and let her get used to her enviroment. I have lots of useful videos on cockatiels, including bonding, looking after, cage set up etc on my channel!

@@kiwidacockatiel5058 So some people recommend getting parrots out right away. But me and Sophie definitely do not, especially with small ones. We all want that magic moment when they come out and trust us immediately. But more often than not they come out and panic and hurt themselves. I'd give her time to adjust. Treat her through the bars, sit near her and just be around her and let her get used to you, your home and her home! Imagine if you moved to somewhere strange with strange people all of a sudden. It'd be scary and it would take time for you to get more confident and for those people to earn your trust!

@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kathleen, I'd definitely stop her from biting or licking your eye as it could be a potentially dangerous behaviour if she slips or bites by accident. It's possible she has become mega attached to you or hormonal. The biting behaviour when someone else gets close is likely misdirected aggression. She wants to bite them, but cant, so expresses it by biting you instead!

@@Actualgodgogeta righty. I understand you’re worried but you just got her. She’s likely worried and unsure what is going on. Let her settle in and make sure she has access to food and water and has high up natural perches so she can rest comfortably in her cage. If she’s eating, drinking, pooping that’s all good. I have lots of content on cockatiels on my channel. If she does get unwell it’d be best you save up so you can take her to a vet. Also getting a check up when you first get a parrot is always good.
