We had a parakeet growing up and made many of these mistakes with him. He was stuck in a small-ish cage and became obsessed with his mirror. My mom got him a “girlfriend” about a year after we got him, and he was constantly pecking her. We thought it was cute how he kissed her so much! Well.. she passed away a few months after we got her. Looking back now, it’s so so sad. :( We didn’t have the internet back then, but my parents should have done more research.

1. Don't feel bad because you have any of these products, slowly remove them or save up for healthy and safe ones, especially if you didn't know that some of these were harmful! Everyone has to learn it. 2. DO NOT get rid of small bird cages, in fact, you might even want a small, easy to carry one in case you need to visit a vet or you bring your bird outside for a bit! Don't leave them in it too long though! 3. If you're not sure if something is safe for your bird, you probably want to not add it until you make sure it is safe and more research is done! and 4. I'VE NEVER HAD A BIRD. this is just tips I think everyone should know though!

Jude, you are right! I promise you that many manufacturers are not ethical and care about profits only. I can give you an example of a rubber dog toy that was designed with a hole in it to place treats inside. Many dogs got their tongue stuck, and it would swell and cause severe complications. The manufacturer is on record stating they rather pay the lawsuits then take the product off the market. Turn your anxiety into action. . . In your own way. Never doubt your capabilities.

Peanuts can be deadly to parrots because of a mold specific to peanuts that you can not see. So often they show no symptoms until it’s too late.

I'm not convinced there's an issue having them along with natural ones, given that my birds choose their pumice perch over the natural ones for sleeping every night (I had to buy a second one to stop fights over who got to sleep on it). That & the vertical branch are the favourites to my birds

@@AlyssaThePikachu I actually use a small cage intended for permanent habitation (it was the 2nd largest at the pet store and still miniscule compared to my enclosure) for travel and outside time! It gives them more space than their carrier, so if they're gonna be in it longer than fifteen minutes, that is where they go. Which is why we bring this up. Small cages are bigger than most carriers, so they're perfect for anything short of air travel. But you've also gotta make sure you emphasize that they shouldn't be used for permanent habitation when you talk about them like this, because they are marketed as being for permanent habitation.

On the subject of toys: Make sure the clips and chains are safe. No spring clamps like a carabiner clip or keychain clip. Make sure the chains/rings that the toys are hanging on are also closed rings and not rings that are on keychains that twist around these too can also hurt beaks. Bonus tip: an alternative for the grit/calcium supplement - get a cuttlebone. calcium and chew toy all in one. STAY AWAY from the "mineral blocks" though. they have a lot of additives. Controversial Tip: In my experience sanding perches/rope perches are not all bad, but they should not be the ONLY perch you have in your cage. Your bird should have at LEAST 3 different types of perches to choose from of varying widths and shapes. Even natural perches should be used carefully based on the types of dye, sealant, and wood type used. (what I'm saying is just make sure you're getting your perches from a good source and not just going outside and picking up some branches) If you do use a sanding perch, it should be put near the food (Essentially in a place where they will use it, but not sit on it all day. It should be a spot where they sit temporarily) The same goes for rope perches. Overall, always make sure your toys and materials in your bird's cage are always maintained and monitored for defects. Do your research, get many opinions, read published bird books, watch online videos and love the heck out of your little feather friend.

agreed :) on the cuttlebone, if they won't eat it, try to get a natural one. I got one on ebay from a user who advertised that it was hand collected from a local beach & one of my birds LOVES that, but won't touch any other cuttlebone. One packet I bought stunk of fish when I opened it, so presumably that's why. I think most is probably waste products from the fishing industry, whereas the one collected from the beach had been floating in the ocean, being cleaned by the sun & salt water for months before she got it. So if you think your bird doesn't like cuttle bone, try naturally sourced before being sure of that

I get my perches from outside.. I wash them with Dawn dish soap rinse well... My birds like to pick the bark off them! I use different sizes and always have back up perches when I change things around some of my branches even swing! 🐦💙🐦💜🐦

I didn't know about the Teflon thing, well, I knew it was made from toxic chemicals but didn't know it releases fumes. Our bird never goes near the counter or stove top, he just stays either on the dining table or by the sink a few feet away while I cook. He is fine, but I suppose it's because I left the back door open (with the screen door closed) half the time. I will definitely keep this in mind though. He doesn't like to be too far or out of sight so he always wants to be nearby

One tip I do have for bird owners who happen to have a smaller cage, keep that cage door open whenever you’re around, sometimes your bird will just sit on a perch, which is fine, if the door is open because then it’s their choice to be there. My bird hangs out on his cage quite a bit, and it’s a smaller cage (it’s all I could afford at the time and currently saving for a more apt cage), but that cage door is always open whenever I’m around. I also find that it’s better to make your own bird toys, it’s much cheaper overall and you know what is going into that toy

My budgie loved his bells and actually composed little songs and accompanied music he loved on his favorite bell. Tube bells were way too heavy for him. I suggest watching the bird to see how he uses the bell. If all he does is attack the clapper, take the bell. Birds like to talk to a mirror , sometimes fight it if agitated, even when they have mates, perhaps not to bite their friends, so if they’re not obsessing on the mirror, it’s okay. ABSOLUTELY AGREE ABOUT FABRIC TOYS. The parrot will shred and can get snagged in unique ways. My budgie got a wing tip caught in a raveling satin ribbon. I saw her trying to pull free and cut the thread with scissors. She could have dislocated her wing or worse.

Maybe you can get her a brand new twig one so she an at least go from the fabric to the healthy twig variety, and then take it out for a few hours every day, then out for a whole day, then out 2 days a week, and so on, at whatever “speed” you feel she is tolerating, and wean her off of it finally, without as much stress as you’d have just taking her fabric one out with no sub. I’d be the same as you & not want to cause her anxiety. 😿

I got two of the biggest parrot cages, that still fit through my doors. Took one side out of each and wired them togethef, voila a hugd cage, takes up almost the full room. Then we made them an aviary outside, about 4 x 5m . But the best part for the sulphur crested cockatoos is, that they can decide to go out. A wire cube, attached from the cage side door leads to the window, where I got a cat door, outside the window is another home made wire tunnel that leads to the aviary. In the aviary we have natural dirt, bushes branch highways, hollow tree trunks, a bath and toys, rain and sun and shade! And other birdie friends, they talk too. Plus we sit outthere with them too. Got a comfy bench in the aviary, so we can have a chat, haha They never sleep outside, they may miss out on dinner, haha, they love what we eat. Outside they nibble on the vegetation. Easy peasy, they are having a great life

I kept the dowel perches at the bottom of my birds cages for them to use when they’re feeling lazy and want to climb instead of fly, because birds are playful and silly and sometimes like to jump around on the various perches. But yes, it’s better to keep the real wood branch type perches for them to sit on at the top of the cage where they will sit all night or sit for hours. Like you said, though, it’s ok to have a couple of dowels as long as they’re not at the top of the cage where they sit for hours

I ordered once from there and then called to ask if I could just pick it up instead and i was amazed at the amount of creative toys there are for birds. I have a smallish cage for my parakeet, it’s not a humongous cage but it’s not tiny. It fits around 7 toys that he loves, and since it’s only him in there he’s very content❤️ I also let him fly around a lot so he doesn’t get lonely, so he’s only in there to sleep or to play for a few hours a day. Thanks for the information though!! I’m getting two more parakeets soon, and I’m going to buy a bigger cage as well :)

I have a question about using an all natural mite and lice spray mixed with water in a spray bottle...I adopted a cockatiel hoping around someone's yard with clipped wings and very small injury which is healing....is it safe to use a product like this?

@@bettyduffey3364 unsure who you are directing the question to, but if you are unsure if something is bird safe,I would call your exotic veterinarian if you have one for your bird and see if you could ask them maybe? Birds are very sensitive as far as pets go so I would error on the side of caution and not introduce something to them or their environment if you’re not positive it’s safe

@@bettyduffey3364 also if the birds wings are clipped they are most definitely someone’s pet, perhaps they escaped, if you have Facebook I would put up a public post about finding the bird and look and see if anyone in your area has posted that they lost a cockatiel. Even with their wings clipped, a gust of wind can help a bird fly some distance, so it’s possible the little one you found escaped and flew farther than it expected, hence the injury

1) Those toys with a long chain and slivers of thin wood. My Yellow Nape Amazon goes through like one a week, but this is what happened the first time I gave him one: As he chews away the pieces of wood, the length of exposed chain increases. Thankfully, I was right next to his cage when he started screaming bloody murder because the chain twisted around his leg and he got caught up in there. What I do now is hang the toy in such a way (through the top of the cage but clip it to the side) so I can keep an eye on how much exposed chain there is and adjust so there’s only like an inch or two. Not enough to wrap around his leg. 2) The rope perches are fine, as long as you watch your bird isn’t ingesting it. 3) All cages should have THREE stainless steel bowls. Water, dry food, veggies. And preferably with outside access so you don’t have to stick your hand into the cage. That action, for a new timid bird you’re training, is a disaster. 4) Great channel, and subscribed.

Pet shops should be closed down. Just imagine all the sad, cramped, impacted and sore footed birds there have been over the hundreds of years they have been kept as pets. Just a word about newsprint paper...as they are likely to chew it then that can be harmful too as the ink contains chemicals.

Thank you for the nesting box’s not a bit ago we brought a nesting box for our male and female budgie with the fibers luckily i did take the fibers out very soon after hearing about infections and wounds in there body but now i know to keep the box out of the cage!!! :) (i took the box out 1-2 months after I found out!!! :)✨ Also the bells my budgie loved them and now we make sure when buying them there safe!! :)

I've kept a rope perch in my parakeets' cage for 7 years. They don't chew it and have never had any problems. I replace them when they start showing wear. They also have natural perches, and just the 1 rope perch. Interested in her answer myself, but that's my experience.

Every toy has some kind of safety concern. Thats why its important to keep an eye out. If you start to see fraying, remove it immediately, but I've had birds for over a decade and never encountered a bird that ingests rope.

Yes, I believe that it's okay to have rope perches as long as your birds didn't chew it. I have 5 lovebirds and they all chew on anything 🤣🤣 So I don't have any rope perches or anything with synthetic material or cotton in their cage.

I definitely recommend getting baby cockatiels as they are easier to train. A normal cage needs to have (2 medium-sized food bowls, 2 water containers a nest and a plate-sized bird bath that should be deep enough to swallow their legs. I recommend you getting a mixed diet.) Birds need to be entertained too. So get some friendly toys. If you can entertain them yourself its not necessary.

DUDE I was at the store the other day looking for a cage to prepare for the introduction of a Parrotlet (I've owned Parakeets in the past and would like to own a bird again.) An employee caught me looking at the birds (was watching parakeets cuz they're cute, not interested tho) and cages. I was looking at the larger ones since I heard that P'lets would do better in em, and this guy points out that the two budgies are bonded and that if I wanted one, I should get both. I didn't ask but sure that's fine and all but then the man points at the TINIEST CAGES (around 10"x10") and then goes: "This cage is big enough for both of them." NAHHHH

heres a tip!! if you have a small bird cage u could keep it to 1.put ur birds in and give them outside time 2.use them for car rides to the vet or anywhere for that matter 3.put ur birds in if your cleaning ,remodeling ,and/or doing something to their cage in general

I use my “bonus” cage as an extra spot in the house that my bird can choose to play on. I removed the roof, but kept it filled with food, water, toys, and she spends time there enjoying the change of scenery. I think having a “bonus cage” makes her feel secure in that she always has a place to go.

I have had birds my entire life and I have used about half of these products regularly without even considering what the consequences could be for the poor babies. I even fed my birds only millet for their entire lives. It sucks that people trap animals inside their homes but don't care enough to find out what is good and harmful for them. But what can you expect, most people don't care enough to find out what is good and bad for themselves, let alone another living being. I guess I got what I had coming because one day I took my bird outside (for whatever reason) even though she was not trained and unlike other times, when I clutched her closely so she wouldn't fly away, this time I got confident, put her on the grass, then she got spooked and flew away. I realized that you can't own a life. She was never mine to begin with, but I was under the impression that she was. I was very foolish, and still am, but at least now I know that when you treat living beings like shit, they will one day find an escape (whether it's by death or otherwise) and you will experience the same pain they went through. Birds probably shouldn't be living in our houses, anyways. I doubt they like it like a dog does, but that's beside the point. Just know that we don't get to keep anything in this life. All we have is our soul. Life is a gift. The present moment is an opportunity for us to do better than before. I made mistakes, I hurt animals and people in the past, but I will be more aware from now on and try to never harm a living creature again. Thank you for making this video and opening my eyes a bit more to the importance of considering what I'm about to do before I act.

I get what you are saying when you said "Birds probably shouldn't be living in our houses, anyways" but if a bird is bred in captivity, they can't be released. they don't know how to find food or what to avoid. You defiantly shouldn't release a parrot in a place that species of parrot is not native to, if you decide to release it anyways. That would honestly be worse than not taking care of it correctly.

i am glad that you are willing to learn from your mistakes and move on! if you still have birds, and you want to take them outside safely(the vitamins from the sun are very good for them), you can bring them out in a clear carrier or cage, or you can harness train them (they sell tons of good bird harnesses online), or if you are experienced enough and they trust you, you can free fly them! as for your bird that flew away, it most likely either was found by someone, or it is dead(i’m sorry!). birds and other animals raised in captivity cannot and do not belong in the wild, because their instincts are not there like that of a bird or other raised in the wild. i could obviously be wrong in some areas here so if anyone knows more about this, please correct me

All of these things aren't necessarily bad tbh. Sandpaper perches also help with beak filing. My parakeet loves hers but never uses it habitually. Boings and rope swings are absolutely fine, just know your bird and do daily cage checks. My cockatoo loves and I mean LOVES ropes. I truthfully just check his ropes daily and snip and clean them so he doesn't get stuck or eat them. Plastic food bowls are available for my cockatoo, but they're made of very thick plastic and cleaned daily with water and weekly with very mild dish soap (seriously don't use a lot). Bird vitamins aren't bad in idea but yes please don't use a lot. My cockatoo loves the flavor of it, but I only use a very little bit. Keeps him drinking well. Space it out! Don't give a lot.

My rescued love birds came with nasty rope toys and perches. That was that first thing I took away, they were also cage bound so the next thing was to make them an aviary. And next is replacing the plastic bowls.

100% agree with you that frayed rope products can be dangerous. My lovebird entangled her foot in a string and was stuck upside down. In her panic trying to free herself, she only made it worse. Luckily I was in the room when it happened and was able to cut her free. I threw out that toy immediately and will never place another in her cage again.

...the happy hut was the reason how I lost my Rosie, my little budgie bff. I didn't know, she had a prolapse, did great for surgery but sadly she went down fast after and we lost her when we got back to the vet. 💔 Also avoid petting birds on their backs, bellies, they look at it as you flirting and if you are not willing to give them babies, head scritches are preferred. My birds diet break down was always 60% pellet, 30% fruit and veggies, 10% seed. Also made mash made out of whole grains and veggies. This video is spot on. ❤🙌🏻 Great info! and not to mention birds and their accessories being already expensive it's great info on what not to waste your money on. Put all that towards a nice cage or make a savings account for vet visits. ❤

Thanks for this. I have a small open wood box lined with felt. My girl sits in it sometimes during the day, but doesnt sleep there overnight. I've kept it there so she always has a dark space to go to. I'm not worried about the felt itself, since it cannot fray. But now I'm worried about hormonal issues. I guess I'll take it out, and just hang some of the felt by a perch for darkness? She does like to put her head under felt when sleeping. Does that sound like a good idea?

I filter my bird's water in a pitcher to remove the chlorine. Our city water is heavily chlorinated. I filter my own drinking and cooking water, as well. And I let water sit in the watering can at least 24 hours before using it om my plants, because chlorine evaporates.

@@TrevRevlin Vet wrap is made of a tear resistant material, whereas the rope is soft, unravels easily and can be digested. Not saying the vet wrap can't! Only that I can extend the life of their favorite toy by wrapping and replacing as needed. Good question!

I gotta disagree with the vitamin & supplement section, it totally depends on the kind of bird, how its kept, and of course its diet. Personally I own an indoor pigeon who needs the extra vitamins mixed into the food, since he won't be able to get vitamin d naturally indoors (ultraviolet rays cant go through windows), and other vitamins that he wouldn't get from his diet naturally (his diet consists of seed, grains, corn & peas, etc. Typical grain eating bird diet.) Plus there can often also be calcium in the supplement, which is vital if your bird lays eggs, accidental or not. Of course dosage has to be kept an eye on, since overdosing can obviously be horrible to any animal, but vitamin deficiency can also be bad.

I agree with you..👍 In my personal opinion I understand that she as a pet owner wants to share through her youtube channel some of her personal ideas and beliefs about the things she THINKS is or would be perjudicial to birds, but one point people miss is that.. she is not a certified person, she is not a veterinarian or a scientist. I'm not saying she is totally wrong but people should consider that, I think some of her advices are quite drastic or too general. I would suggest people to do also their own research and talk to their vets before following any advice they hear on social media. Because after all it is all about their pet's life and well-being.

hi! yes that sounds great, letting your bird out of the cage all day is amazing for exercise! birds can also get bored even if they are outside of the cage all day so you also want to make sure that you're interacting with your bird and providing enrichment. this could be anything like training your bird and giving her something to keep busy like playing with toys, trying new foods, etc

If you're ever worried I recommend watching how they act in nature :) a healthy bird generally treats their cage as a safe space where they can feel safe/calm down if feeling overwhelmed. they're not harmful at all if treated as one in nature might treat a roosting spot/nest hollow.

Even though I own canaries, not parrots, these tips are really helpful. Just a few tips. 1. Dowel perches are not really bad, the same with sandy perches, IF those perches are the lowest. Birds tend to sleep on the highest perch. So I just put sandy and dowel perches but they are low. 2. Small cages can be useful travel carriers, but just like you said, they can't be a birds permanent cage, as thwy need space. 3. Cotton rope perches are ok as long as they have no loose strings. 4. Bird litter can be used as a foraging activity, because you can hide seeds or treats in it.

I've found that having a large cage with multiple diameter and shape perches is best. The highest perch is a concrete one with sort of natural rough stone surface, which helps keep his nails wearing down naturally, and he can always move to one of the smooth wooden perches if it hurts his feet. The top of the cage also has a concrete block which he walks on regularly, which also helps keep his toenails wearing naturally, so much so that I haven't had to trim his nails in almost 30 years. He's an African Gray, and that top concrete perch is about 2" in diameter, he also has one of those which are only rough on the sides, though it doesn't feel like it is rough enough to cause wear on his toenails. Dowel perches are okay as long as there are enough different diameter ones available for your bird to stand on.... including 'square-ish' ones. Variety is best.

I guess it really depends on individual birds. I have four birds, Senegal, GCC, lovebird and cockatiel and they all hv sleeping tents and some of the toys mentioned here, but they have been doing fine for about five years now. They don't chew on their tents, although I did remove some fabric perches a couple of years ago after they were chewed on by the Senie. I think you'll just need to keep a close eye on how they behave and if you see anything that could be harmful, just remove them.

Hey, so the food bowl you showed was a hooded food bowl. There is no problem with the ceramic that I'm aware of, but there have been reports of birds getting stuck in the hooded water bowls and drowning. It depends on the dimensions of the bowl, but it would be best if you aware your viewers of this! Just wanted to help love your videos!

I Totally disagree with you saying not to give birds vitamins. Most veterinarian tell you vitamins is good for birds that are picky eater even when you give them a balanced diet of healthy food and vegetables and fruit and nuts they still need extra help. Not all birds like to eat the same thing. I have been a bird owner for more than 25 years. But some of your tips are helpful.

Around 3 months ago my brother accidentally stood on my bird, he broke his hip, snapped it's leg in half and had internal bleeding and was not expected to survive. We drove for hours to get to a special bird vet where they said they can try and save him but it was unlikely he would survive, they put a pin in his leg and tried to save him. We brought him home after two days, every two weeks we had to bring him back there so they could check up on him. After about 2 weeks they told us him was probably going to live but he will never be properly healed and may never walk the same again. Now if you took a look at my bird you would never even know anything ever happened to him. He has made a full recovery and is going to be ok.😊

I have two rope perches, and when I got them I made sure there was no tassels or lose threads, and my birds just climb them and have no interest of chewing luckily. If they do start chewing them then they will be taken away of course, but in the meantime they are fun toys

never realized bells, little box homes, and mirrors were a problem i never knew about the non-natural wood perches and plastice trays (which i wash everyday or everyother) ive had those for YEARS def gon check my birds feet rn and get those trays and perches replaced ASAP to be honest ive never had a problem with bells, or mirror toys a female bird of mine usually says in her little box home and has never gotten hormonal issues from what i noticed might consult and avian about it though thank you for this informational video!
