I just want to say a big thank you for this video. My 3 year old daughter has autism or as we call it her super powers. We are now fighting for my older 2 to get tested as my second daughter is finding school so hard. She can do something one day then find it hard the other day. We got plan in place and an early help plan with a social worker who is going to help us.

My 11 year old hasn't been diagnosed. He's been under CAMHS for a year and they said he has childhood trauma ( he has a heart condition). Primary school said autistic, senior school have said autistic and now a new therapist, we have at the hospital as CAMHS finished with him, has queried why CAMHS didn't do a sensory test. He's always had meltdowns and been sensitive to noise, he had to have speech therapy when he was at nursery and he falls to bits if something doesn't go to plan. I feel like i'm banging my head against a brick wall......he doesn't do that thankfully. He has a great sense of humour and gets on better with adults and older kids, he also has social anxiety. He's a mixed bag bless him.

Hi, Rhi. My daughter from the age of 3 showed these symptoms & more. As a mother, I was too scared to tell anyone, cause I thought they would think I wasn't a good mother & couldn't cope. So I told nobody at all. And struggled all these years, the best I could. She's now just turned 18 & started uni & got assessed by the phycologist at the uni, he said he's 99.9% sure she has. And we are now just waiting for a new referral from the doctor/hospital, to be assessed as an adult, as she got an appointment a few months ago & told them she was away to turn 18, so they put her on the adult waiting list. I really hope she gets the help she needs, as she is bright & I can see her going far in life. It's a bit sad when a 24 year old felt like they couldn't tell anyone & had to struggle though it, themselves.

It's so so hard to get an autisum diagnosis, we've been going through lots of assessments for different things and finally at an appointment the consultant we were seeing saw certain trats and started the wheels in motion, tbh I finally felt a huge relief that what I see and knew was actually not me being the ott parent . Thank you for this video it’s a great help! I’m a mum of 4! Believe that my younger two have autisum but haven’t gone through a diagnosis as of yet. My son who is 5 has a lot of meltdowns, doesn’t like loud noise (this is sometimes) hates having his hair cut etc, very over emotional and has anxiety. But at school they have no concerns 🤷🏻‍♀️ so it seems to be at home he is like this. My daughter who is 3 struggles socially, she only has ever played with her siblings and cousin, she’s been at nursery for a year now, and has on my just started to speak to her teacher, she will not play with other children or speak to them, if we go to the park and a child speaks to her she will not make eye contact and will get off the climbing frame. She speaks very well at home but hardly speaks to anyone outside of our home. Nursery have said it’s lockdown that has caused this. She is very ocd with things as well, every morning we have to make her bed perfectly otherwise she will have a meltdown, even if she gets out of bed to go to the toilet during the night we have to make it perfectly. She has started to not play with her toys as she likes everything in a perfect place so it’s effecting how she plays at home 😔 Do I speak to the health visitor and my sons school? Or see if they grow out of these things? They are both very anxious at night as well, we have to hold their hands and lay with them. My eldest two sons are not like this. X

Really helpful thanks Rhi. My kid is 1, but as half our families are on the spectrum, we're keeping an eye out. Already I see her development is very spikey, she's walking and very focused on certain toys and activities but does not understand dolls or teddies at all. On the plus side she will play with a tv remote for a whole hour, which is great if I need to clean/cook/lay down!

We know a child (boy) that was diagnosed with ASD by one provider and then other provider was like "no way". The child doesn't exhibit any of these specific signs, maybe less inconsistent eye contact. Maybe?? uses less gesture, not sure, started pointing at normal age. More readily and eagerly talks with adults than children. Anyway, the parents are pursuing an ADOS just to get more information because it's super weird to have such divergent opinions. It's also interesting, in your ADOS video, that how children talk about feelings as one of these indicators of autism. A play therapist we know says that for children, describing feelings is way over-rated because words are insufficient for them. It's interesting that it would be part of the assessment.

@@MummyofFourUK We know someone who does EEG's and someone who is researching eye reflex for diagnosis of autism. There is more of a push for biological markers. I think that's interesting because it has a tendency to suggest more "medical" and it's more sort of essentialist, but might be helpful when the spectrum seems to becoming so very wide that it starts to become confusing about where the boundaries are between neurotypical and neurodivergent-- and a bit subjective.

Hey Rhi, my little boy has autism and other than hand over hand that you mentioned he does everything else. It started off with thin lightly flicking his ears and gradually turned into him hand flapping, which he does constantly now and it’s uncontrollable. We’ve had his diagnosis now coming up to 3 years. I started to notice sign at the age of 3 when I spoke to my health visitor who then started to watch him over a few months and agreed something was there. He doesn’t cope with crowds or some noises and he has to use his ear defenders. I would strongly agree if you feel someone doesn’t seem right get it checked out. I’m a mum to an asd and a adhd so it’s definitely worth it.

I think both my children have signs of autism but we haven’t had them assessed. My son has been diagnosed with selective mutism by his school has he doesn’t speak at all when he’s there even though he never stops talking at home. My daughter has major melt downs over the very slightest thing and she is very advanced in her reading and writing

It’s difficult looking for certain signs, when my daughter was around 3 she started only eating certain foods , was a nightmare to get her to eat, as she grew she hated clothing , didn’t like clothes on her skin, at school I used to have to bring her home at lunch time so she could remove her uniform for an hour , going out was difficult as she hated getting dressed, she had a lot of quirks as I would describe, found friendships hard, would become fixated on certain programmes and only want to talk about them, a few family members suggested I get her tested, I was worried for years about her although she was a really happy child, she’s 18 now and just a regular happy teen, loves clothes, and has none of the quirks she had for years growing up, we never got her tested for autism, although we sort advice from paediatric doctors regarding her eating, it’s hard to know really ( for low autism) I never knew if I was doing the right thing 😣 but now she’s grown up and living a completely normal teenagers life x

Your description of a meltdown is exactly our experience and I didn’t even think about spikes development but she has been able to recognise numbers since she was about 2 but her social development is not where it could be. Hand dryers and coffee shop coffee makers are our nightmare (thank god for ear defenders) not looking forward to bonfire night

We ( myself and achool) have suspected my son is on the spectrum for the 4 years he has been in school, he has just had someone come in and observed him while in school qe are waiting for the feed back. My son struggle with social interactions with other pears his age, often starting conversations based on his interests instead of introducing him self, just joining in play and not introducing himself and then gets irritated when they don't include him as they have no idea who he is or why hes just joined in, he has got better with this, he still struggle to hold conversation especially of there not taking about what he wanta to talk about. He struggle qith understanding humour if he does or says something that makes people laugh he will repeat the action of words over and over to gwt the same reaction not realising ot is no longer funny he does the same if someone els says something funny he will repete what happend to get you to laugh with him again. he had obsessive interest in fans when he was younger and would find them everywhere he knew all the different names and liked to know everything about them and watch KZbin videos about different kinds of fans. He often hums and doesn't realises he is doing it, and he struggle with loud noises and distractions he use to wear ear difenders in school to compleet work, he is better with this now but still struggle to focus on school work, he doesn't like change and can get extremely upset if things don't go to his plan. There is probably many other little bits I could go in to but I would be hear all day xxxxxx

Really helpful this video my son is two he had a brain bleed after heart surgery the bleed caused death to some brain cells which affects leaning behaviour difficulty’s and a few other things so his paed is keeping eye on him for autism adhd and so on he already has sensory problems and behind on speech x

I've already had an asd assessment for my son (he was 3 at the time) they said that they felt the traits he illistrated at the time were down to his speech and language delay. He still uses scripted speech, I didnt realise that what you discribed zara doing, bouncing off things was a stim, this is something he does regularly. I want to apply for reassessment as he's now almost 7 but the school are reluctant. I feel that this is due to the fact he has an educational statement (which has been inplace since he was 2 and a half). They keep saying that a diagnosis is for life, my argument is that asd is for life too diagnosed or not. 🤦‍♀️ So frustrating. Xxxx

She also has selective mutism- hence the worry monster, when she is upset about something she literally can not get words out hence she writes it down x any help or advise would be great x x x

Girls are so hard to diagnose as they mask to keep up with peers, My advice would be document, document, document have your class teacher to have a “behaviour/ mood book for school hrs and for you at home …. Be in weekly contact with SEN at school never be afraid to ask …. good luck with your daughters journey your her best advocate and know her the best xx

@Peanut I think families that have experience are also a great to get advice from as they have personally experience. Masking isn't exactly a well known thing and asd in girls is very hard to diagnosed even for a professional.

This is one of a large list of things I feel bad for parents having to deal with in the US because of the cost. I've heard of, at the higher end, it costing up to $5,000, if not more in some cases, for an autism evaluation and testing. It's so complicated to know what it will cost if you can't get it covered due to being very poor. I'm glad you live somewhere that it didn't cause a financial harm to get done for your children.

Signs can be present from day 1, other signs become apparent later on. Mine had some definite signs very early , things that just weren’t “right” in terms of her feeding and sleeping from day 1 , then there were sensory issues and anxiety that become apparent as she got older. Some things were present early but it wasn’t until later when we looked closer as other issues became apparent that it was clear that they were signs
