Hi Danny, thank you so much for all your wonderful videos! I found tiny white bugs (0.5-1mm long) on the barks of my phalaenopsis orchids. some of them seem to have wings... Hi Danny! I love your videos, I have found them very helpful as I am trying to start growing Orchids. I noticed some pale white, tiny bugs (not mealybugs) climbing around my orchids and also in a banana plant I have in the same room. They do not seem to be affecting my plants negatively at all, leaves and roots are healthy. Should I be concerned? I also have an orchid I recently repotted with wilted leaves, everything else looks healthy (blooms and roots) What do you recommend? Can this be reversed?
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
Hi well I am not sure about what they could be, but a picture might help :) just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :) About the Phal, did it have wilted leaves before repottting? or is it a side affect now? if it is, it might be that it needs a bit more frequent water, new medium doesn't retain as much water, so observe the medium it might dry faster than the old one. This is just a guess if you say the roots are in good condition. Just take a look at her and observe the roots again and the medium. Hope this helps :)
@tabithabennett33808 жыл бұрын
I looked at the bugs again and some of them are brownish, they are so tiny and they scurry away very quickly, hard to take a picture. I applied some soapy insecticide to the orchid (i did last week too and it did not damage it) so hopefully that gets rid of them. :) It is a little humid in there for the Phal with the wilted leaves, and the roots are green and plump so I'm hesitant to water. The leaves seem to be perking up slightly? I watered and soaked it last week. Blooms look healthy and leaves are not yellowing or wrinkling. I also applied insecticide to a false alarm of mealybugs to this one that is wilted. I wonder if that stressed it out. Thank you for all your help, it is hard to find consistent tips that work on the internet and I feel your videos offer great continuity and clarity when it comes to caring for Orchids! :)
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
Well if the orchid starts to look better that's a great sign :D one more thing that can make her leaves wilt is temperature, do you keep it in a very warm place? I am just thinking of possibilities now :P
@tabithabennett33808 жыл бұрын
I keep it in the basement where it is moderately warm- average of 69-70 degrees fahrenheit, is that an okay temp? My Oncidium Sweet Sugar is thriving... Also, my friend left her Phal in a box for 3 months and forgot about it and it has super healthy roots and leaves. Don't know how that's possible but I think that's quite remarkable...

HELp I have flying nats. I opened a new bag of chips and now I can't get rid of them.
@sippigrrrl6 жыл бұрын
Theresa Krider Are the gnats coming from a bag of potting (bark) chips, or the chips that you eat? I'm just trying to clarify, but given the forum, I'll assume you mean bark chips. Depending upon how much/big the bag is, I’d just toss the whole bag, and maybe contact the vendor from whom you bought them. I boil any media I use before use (except sphagnum moss, and I only use the best kind, the long fibered New Zealand variety, and rehydrate it using distilled water) which makes any medium perfectly clean, and I always use gloves while handling my orchids and/or their media. You could maybe try boiling your bark chips for about 25-30 minutes before you use it, which should kill the gnats and their eggs, plus you get the added bonus of having nice, clean, moist bark to use when you repot any orchids that you may have already potted up and bark from this bag. Throw this bark into a separate bag to put in the trash, and seal the bag of contaminated bark really well, then when you take your larger bag of trash out, seal THAT trash bag really well, too. Leaving this infested bark out in the trash is like a gnat's wet dream, if they were to have them. So, don't give them that opportunity! Any of the clean and boiled bark that's leftover needs to be dry before it's stored to prevent mold from forming, which is not desirable. When I used bark, I’d always put it on a cookie sheet in the oven at about 325° F for ten minutes or so, which will vary, depending on how wet the chips were, but the oven WILL remove the moisture from the bark, eventually. Then I'll store it in a gallon-sized Ziplock™ bag; conversely. If you still have a LOT of bark remaining, go to the dollar store or somewhere similar, and get a plastic tote that seals pretty well where they join together, although it's not as airtight as the bag, it works for my leca beads. :)

@sippigrrrl6 жыл бұрын
Suzie O'Connor I know that she's gotten a few cute ones from IKEA. They do have great actual plant stands, and some of their bookshelves and the shelving systems for your closet work really well. But I am certain that the white one with the round spaces for the pots put at random intervals is from IKEA, I believe it was called "Socker" but that particular version was from 2014. They still have Socker pots that look different, but I'm not sure if they have any new (or old) stands made specifically for them.

can you use peroxide as a substitute for alcohol in all cases? when will peroxide not work?
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
Hi, hmmm I am not sure if peroxide can substitute it. Personally I don't use alcohol on orchids as I can only find ethanol, isopropil is scarce and expensive. I use alcohol to disinfect tools and working spaces. Peroxide I use on orchids to kill off snails and fungi, it also disinfects but not quite like alcohol I think. I only use the 3% concentration of H2O2 though :)
