What about if your hours keep getting reduced? Your supervisor starts micro-managing you and starts to document everything. If HR gives you dirty looks or laughs at you every time they see you. I would say those above signs are very clear that you don't have much longer to go.

I am the most senior member of my staff and I have been asked to create an actual manual for my team to use to learn everything I do. I have made it clear that plan to retire within the next 2-3 yrs. I am timing the completion of the manual to correspond to my timeline 😂. One of my teammates has been assigned the task of typing the manual as I dictate. She was really bugging me about it at first but soon realized I am going at my pace. I want to exit on my terms and not be forced out. And some key info will be withheld until the end.

PIPs are used to get people fired 99.9% of the time, not "sometimes". If you're given one or your boss is documentating everything, abandon ship.

That was not fair or nice how you lost your job. Sorry but PIP is not a good sign 99.99% of the time. So I will leave 0.01% possibility to work in favor. But definitely in favor of looking for employment elsewhere. The employer can always find several alternative paths, processes to bring an employee performance up to par without formally dropping him into a PIP if they are inclined to keep him. It’s called additional training/coaching/mentoring in simple terms. So I will go with your second explanation how PIPs are used i.e. for the company to shield itself.

I think I might get fired. To give context, my was once upset I had signed up for a one-person shift, because she didn't think I could manage alone. She scoIded a lower-ranking manager for not noticing . When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt beIittIed by her. She said she didn't think so, was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen" and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. Sure, I'm a slow learner and have messed up at work before, but you got a lot of guts labeling and sha ming a guy with learning difficulties like that. That night, while biking, I saw her drop a bunch of groceries outside the store. It was such bad luck. And I ended up smirking. My boss made eye contact with me, and I immediately rode away. I think that--combined with the smirk she probably saw--was a sign of refusal to help her. Again, we made eye contact, and I rode away when I obviously saw her splattered stuff on the ground. Can she fire me for that?

Awesome. This is why I retired. I gave them two months notice and I was asked to write down all of my processes. So basically, that is all I did for the last two months. They wanted me to do a major system upgrade before leaving, which meant giving up at least one of my weekends and I said no. If something went wrong with the upgrade, they would blame me. After I left, I took three people to do what I would have done on the upgrade. Also, after retiring, I have more than doubled my income 😀
