Sigourney was so Deliciously Evil in this movie. I think everyone in their lifetime has had a woman boss like that and it really makes their blood boil. I think that actually was a factor in Sigourney LOSING the Oscar for this role. Members of the Academy HATED her character and gave the Oscar to Geena Davis for "Accidental Tourist" instead. But Sigourney deserved it.

She originally didn't want to do Working Girl bc she'd just returned from Africa for filming Gorillas in the Mist for six months and she was EXHAUSTED. Director Mike Nichols finally talked her into taking the role.

You were a treasure in Working Girl! Now get your, what was it you said? Bony *ss. Get your bony *ss out of my sight. That scene was so awesome, from start (downstairs with the files, "my stuff" to upstairs in the elevator and in the reception area upstairs). I love you so much Sigourney. Whether it is Heartbreakers, Copycats, Alien, Working Girl, even Cabin in the Woods. You just rock!

I always thought the gorilla was a nod to "Gorillas In The Mist" which, if I'm not mistaken, she had starred in right before "Working Girl".

I didn't see it as her making a mistake, it turned out she was the same as the guys and you wonder if she got where she did by stealing other people's ideas. She's smart though, she figured out how to turn the tables at the meeting and almost got away with it. She was a lovable villain, you even feel a bit sorry for her and comical too the way she was chasing the harrison ford character. I guess she got what she deserved in the end.

Such a tremendous cast . . . Alec Baldwin, Joan Cusack, Phil Bosco, Oliver Platt . . . even Amy Aquino in a tiny little role at the end, kills it. No small roles.

What I love most about this character is that she is real. I don't even know if I'd call her evil per se. I'm sure there are thousands of Katherines out there. They are not mean to your face, they pretend to be on your side while only serving their own agenda. Sneakily trampling on anyone who gets in their way, while pretending to be a good innocent person. They don't commit crimes, they are not violent. They just have total disregard for people they see as inferior, manipulating them and using them as they see fit.

Sigourney's honest face, clear, open eyes, and sweet manner make her a bad choice for the role of the main villain. I couldn't see her as evil for almost a second. Sig is good. She couldn't be evil because she's sweet. I love her.

She can play evil because she’s an actor. It’s not real life. She was acting, which she’s very good at. She has played other villain roles as well.

@@Uch16784 I disagree. I thought Weaver was VERY convincing as Katharine Parker in Working Girl. It was one of the most convincing screen performances of that era in my opinion. She didn’t seem like an actor playing a role she seemed like a real person, which is the sign of a great performance. Keep in mind villains can seem honest and sweet mannered on the surface. They can also feel honest and sweet mannered to themselves, justifying their actions. Katharine didn’t see herself as a villain, she saw herself as entitled and deserving. The more interesting fictional villains do. The Wicked Witch of The West was a great character but pretty extreme with no nuance. In real life, plenty of terrible people have been able to convince others that they are good people while doing terrible things. Look at Ted Bundy. Even Charles Manson had a gaggle of female followers who thought he was the cat’s pajamas. You can’t always tell by looking at someone’s eyes, even if you think you can.

What an incredible woman. I just love Sigourney. It’s funny the gorilla is also seen on Melanie Griffith’s back. I used to wonder if it was Mike Nichol’s kind of naughty joke about Melanie’s substance issues on the film. But that’s probably too dark. 😬 It was probably more representative of Katherine’s character in Tess’s life at that stage in the film.

Who is Mike? I love this movie and she was great in it as in Aliens. So decades after seeing it many times I hear that the gorilla was a play on King Kong. That’s a detail that means nothing to me. I watched King Kong Fay Wray version when I was five years old and I had a screaming nightmare that night. Terror! It’s fitting that the first scary movie after King Kong I ever saw was Aliens and I had to be dragged to it. It was great and she was awesome in it. I generally stay away from scary movies even now!

I never thought she was evil in that film. I thought she had the best character to play. People at the bottom see her as evil. But the higher you get professionally the more you see her being just a big fish in the business world. And the corporate world is exactly like a microcosm or wildlife. You don't stay on top of the food chain by being nice and compassionate. The second you show weakness you're out and Catherine couldn't be weak, because the second she was Tess tried to take her place. It is the same with Miranda in Devil wears prada, she is just being a boss, there is nothing evil about her. And Emily is not evil at all, she is just being exactly what is expected of a PA. And the second Emily shows weakness, Andrea takes over. This is how the corporate world functions. If you are not ready to keep your position at ANY cost, then you should not even waste any time or effort trying to have a career. Just be a kindergarten teacher or a cashier at Tesco for the rest of your life.

What a nasty, underhanded, way to look at that. Catherine didn’t HAVE to STEAL Tess’s idea. Tess trusted her. That wasn’t right, no matter how pretty you try and make it look. There’s a line you don’t cross, you don’t steal you subordinates ideas. When you do, you are revealing your true self to them and they know not to trust you again. Can’t cry foul when you get caught.

While your comment makes for a good dramatic read, it’s actually not totally like that. If you keep screwing people over it very well may work against you. Depends on your field, the job, the company. I’ve seen people manipulate their way to advancement by treating people badly and they often wind up paying for it. Keep treating people badly and eventually no one will have your back and that can make a BIG difference in a career. You can also get a rep for being a troublemaker and come downsizing time they’re happy to cut the cord. Miranda is a fictional, highly dramatized character.
