A lot of people don't know this but, verbal contracts are still binding contracts and if you take her to small claims court you can still get your money. Y'all had a mutual understanding of an agreement, she included a requirement without a deadline and you met the requirement. Your mom and the other stylist could testify on your behalf.

Right but to what end? I wasn't prepared just a few months out of beauty school to go to war for $600 at my first ever salon job in the nicest salon in town. I even stayed another few years because I was gas lighted into believing no one else would hire me.

Add depends on the state and the county. For example, verbal contracts are not valid in Texas.

@@MemristerBoogieDown Well, $600 would be Small Claims Court, and the filing fee would be around $100 or so, I'm guessing. If she won, her boss would probably have to reimburse her for that, too. No attorney would take a $600 case, and she'd probably be risking her job to sue her boss, and then there's the issue of collecting the debt after a judgment in her favor. Still a hassle, but probably wouldn't have cost her thousands.

@@siiriparkss plus if she told you she was going to email it to you, asking for it on writing may have felt uncomfortable and redundant. I'm not a stylist / beautician / how ever they are called, but as a young nurse this stuff happened to me. Work would ask me to take some additional CE in an area where they had a staff shortage, promise reimbursement and/or paying my wage for class hours, then get all pickachu face when I ask for what was promised. When you're young and fresh, it doesn't matter the field - someone will absolutely take advantage of you.

One thing I learned from some people is that if they promise to pay you in the future get it in writing and tell them you will take them to small claims court.

Sirii won. She has the loving supportive mother so many of us spent our childhoods longing for. Sirii's mother won. She raised such a compassionate considerate daughter helping people become their best selves instead of the glamorous modeling/acting career that could so easily been hers. She also raised a daughter with enough grace and compassion not to become hard or cynical no matter how badly these awful people treat her. The owner lost. She scammed $600.00, but eventually lost a potentially highly skilled loyal worker. And she has to live with being the kind of person who looks for ways to cheat innocent people, a feeling inside that is nasty.

My former coworker would certify people to become an eyelash-tech. We work in accounting mind you. I was new, didn't think much of it. Probably her side hustle. Then one day she was printing out these very very fake certificates to hand out to her students. Anyways she got fired for not focusing at our job & she went to open up a lash place. Place went under a few months later.

It help to get thing in writing, every task or little thing someone want done I need an email or a memo request, so that I have a paper trail for my evaluation, you can for get about may thing you do so it helps. Also, once it's complete we sent another paper trail like a memo or email. Even the most small thing, I will be like yes I will start working on that but please send me an e-mail so I don't forget, or I send them an email that requires a reply "you wanted me to do this by what date did you need it?" that way they need to reply.

Taking advantage of a young person, for shame! Tip: follow up any meeting with an email stating the summary of what was discussed/decisions made. That way, you have at least a basic paper trail even if there is no written contract, and it is date stamped. Sometimes I even include something like "if there are any corrections please let me know by the end of the week." Then, even if they don't respond, there's a strong implication that all parties are in agreement.

How long ago was this? They took advantage of you, and a verbal contract is still a contract, you may be able to speak with a lawyer, many will do a free consult, to see what your options are.
