SIKHS IN THE SALIENT: Commemorating the Sikh Involvement in the First World War in Ypres, Belgium.
Lecture presented by Dr. Dominiek Dendooven, Curator at the In Flanders Fields Museum (Ieper, Belgium), at the Guru Nanak Foundation of America (Sikh Gurdwara) in Silver Spring, Maryland, on October 30, 2022.
The lecture's title "Sikhs in the Salient" refers to the Ypres (or Ieper) Salient, Belgium, an area of intense trench warfare on the Western Front, of key importance in this war, as masterfully explained in Dr. Dendooven's talk.
This "home-made video" by a member of the Sikh sangat (congregation) at this Gurdwara has recorded Dr. Dendooven's well-researched account of the great role of Sikhs and South Asians in the First World War, and the efforts being made at this museum of World War I in Ieper (Flemish name, = Ypres in French), Belgium, to tell a more complete and inclusive and historically accurate story of the Great War.
The speaker was introduced by Dr. Paul Michael Taylor of the Smithsonian's Asian Cultural History Program, which is partnering with Belgium's In Flanders Fields Museum in their research project.
