Here is a Sikorsky S-76B helicopter during engine start up on the ramp at Princeton Airport (39N) in New Jersey after getting fuel at the pump & waiting for two passengers followed by taxi out & departure on the runway for another flight towards the north. I flew many thousand hours Offshore in the Gulf of Mexico for Exxon Oil to service Communications equipment back in the 1990’s! It’s a great ship as was very comfortable to get to the Oil Production Platforms and spend a week or two each trip,to repair or install Telephone and Two-way radio equipment!

I just noticed the Sikorsky 76, rolling down the runway like a fixed wing but becoming airborne , very shortly about that take off run. It is different that smaller choppers who only have struts to board, but no wheels. I am a fixed wing pilot so choppers are not my thing, though I find them fascinating. Would be fun to have your very own with a limited access to passengers.

That is a non-standard take-off profile which the pilot might have used if there was gravel on the runway and he didn't want to risk smashing a very expensive windscreen with a normal departure from a 5' hover.

@@JohnSapato No, it's not more fuel efficient. My guess is there was gravel on the runway. A normal take-off from the hover can can suck up debris on the runway and smash the windscreen. The rolling take-off doesn't suck up as much gravel.

hunter gatherer No, Kobe’s helicopter did not have a black box. Probably even more important, it did not have a terrain warning. This pilot used an iPad for flights, but it’s highly doubtful that this device can be recovered in working order based on how bad the impact was. This was a high energy impact. We all know this was pilot error anyway. Absent of a mechanical failure that was ruled out, and knowing what we know of the conditions, it is highly likely that the pilot could not see in the fog, and became disoriented. It doesn’t make the pilot a bad man, or a bad pilot, he got caught in conditions where he couldn’t see, which really is no good when you are flying under VISUAL flight rules.
