Thank you.. great video.. the sawing method was not what i expected but made total sense. I have had good luck remoisturizing the tape and just peeling it off.. but you are clearly the master. My confidence is bouyed.. though you years of doing it add an enlightened perspective on grain direction .. really beautiful work..

Amazing. Your work is incredible. The tape removal does look like a PITA. I wonder if it would be worth experimenting with a heat-activated tape and keep a tacking iron beside you? It would definitely take more time to apply, but at the end you could use a heat gun or even heat the whole panel with infrared lamps or an oven and just peal it all cleanly off, skipping all the scrapping and sanding for tape removal.

Hi Silas, I noticed your "The Master Techniques Of Marquetry" is no longer being sold. Is there any chance you might be coming out with a revised version of your DVD in the not-too-far future? As I understand it your DVD goes deeper into the explanation of your techniques than does your book, "A Marquetry Odyssey: Historical Objects and Personal Work." Hope you still respond to questions on this long ago posted KZbin video demo. Thank you.

3/0 blades available from Tools for Working Wood in Brooklyn. I am now sawing my own veneers at 1/24 inch. And I back up the cut with cardboard.

I thought the use of a water-based gum tape was to remove the tape after glue up using steam or moisture. Scraping and sanding is as you say the least exciting part. Beautiful final piece.

Wow, Mr. Kopf... That is amazing. Fascinating. And incredibly intimidating! Your years of experience shine through with the almost casual way you handle the veneer and work your pencil over those imaginary lines... I feel I am mouthing words and saying nothing, in the face of such mastery. Thank you so much for sharing this. I saw somewhere here in the comments that you would think you'd price this at $30,000 if you made it today... How many hours - if you don't mind me asking - did you have in this piece? In the marquetry and then in the actual cabinet? Again, Thank you! Intimidating, yes - but also so inspiring!! :-)

Master, tell me what blade you using for this that do not see the kerf after blade cuts on the veneer's splice? I'm using the smallest what i can buy 8/0 (it's stricte for metal - for jewellery) whitch mean 0,16 x 0,32 mm (names Super Q Niqua 8/0) and actually still can see the kerf. :/ Greetings from Europe.

I use a 2/0 blade. I suspect you break a lot of the 8/0 blades? The size of the blade is determined by the thickness of the veneer, the thickness of the blade, and most importantly, the angle of the tilt of the table. I suspect that if you can see the kerf of an 8/0 blade when you are done that you are cutting vertically. With a 2/0 blade and 1mm veneer the desired angle is about 12 degrees. Experiment with the blades and find the angle. If you are using thinner veneers (.7mm) you can accomplish the same math by putting a waste veneer between the two you are saving. (Note: the package is .21mm versus the .20mm for the two thicker veneers, essentially the same). I hope this helps. Silas

I took a class with Paul Schurch at the Mark Adams school this year. He uses a 2/0. He says smaller is pointless, and after glue-up and sanding the kerf is not noticeable. He also does not use the double bevel method for this reason, It appears Kopf does not either.

The piece was purchased by the Milwaukee Museum of Art when I made it about ten years ago and i can't remember the price. To do a similar piece now would be about $30,000.

Silas Kopf Thanks, that's surprisingly dead on for what I had in my head. I'm sure whoever would buy such a piece would be happy with it, I know I'd be happy to have that in my modest collection. If I'm ever in Milwaukee I'll make the museum the top of my list, do they host any more of your work?

Does anyone know what the third sheet (looks like waste veneer or card) is at 2.40? I'm assuming this reduces the chattering of the veneers and minimises the break-out??
