Silence is a crowd control that you don't see too often in League of Legends. But when you do, it can feel extremely jarring to be on the receiving end of. Today we'll be discussing Silencers and why they're so rare.

Veigar cage technically grounds when touched, which is why it disrupts anyone try to escape with mobility. It is not the same ground as you mention, but it does stop movement. Most stun abilities don't stop the movement of abilities. They complete once in motion and they are stunned where they land. Just wanted to point that out. I know what you were meaning is areas that prevent movement abilities from being cast, but they still can move.

as a malzahar enjoyer, I can confirm that people just seem to gloss over his Q and really pay for it. Especially in the late game, when an assassin rushes at my malz, his silence might as well be a stun because in that 2 second those champs cant use zed w, yasuo windwall or yone blink and just be blown up. same with cho, though that might be more due to the knockup that follows

True, I'm also malzahar player and nowadays most champion rely on their skill so when teamfight happen and Malz Q hit 5 enemy champion midfight they just walk and auto attack like minion lul. Insta win teamfight.

The most painful interaction with silence I've experienced personally is how it Removes Zeri's Auto attack, since you can't Q when silenced, making you effectively useless for the whole duration.

@@dde8721 because shes not a spell caster? shes an adc. her Q is her auto, literally. her q hits wards, her q triggers on-attack, it is an auto, not an ability w/ on-hit. her right click does no damage. she is polymorphed while silenced, essentially. she literally has no options, not even auto, unlike every other adc

Silence is as important as it is cuz of how ability focused the game is, and how easy and plentiful slows are. Notice, all the silences were removed from assasins, those who have the easiest time negating position advantage. The silences that are left are all on imobile champs focused on CC combos or healing over time. In fids case, both. Silence has the potential least impact of any CC, if all your stuff is on cooldown, but the time it buys for a burst champ is fuckin insane

You underestimate just how weak malz E is when people have health regin and mr. 90 damage over 5 seconds has gotten out hp5ed SOOOO often especially vs a dorans or second wind user with an hp pot ticking. Malz greeded yes, but he did get the kill and that is fine.

Sometimes I feel like Silence can be worst than a Root/Stun/Displacement. Not have the ability or item available that you bought to help you basically make you a sitting. Yes you can still auto attack but that won’t mean much if abilities add on to the damage output to potentially live. That’s why Garen’s silence is so impactful you basically lose if you just a squishy or has enough shred to do his ult for the kill

​@@doommaker4000 Stuns and knock up skills are much less subtle. It's why Malphite's ult is the king of all knock-up abilities despite all the power creep. Silence is instantly applied with minimal effort. The few stun or knock-up abilities that take similar amounts of effort are short and telegraphed.

@@xolotltolox7626 I would say that how League was coded because silence in other game, primarily DOTA 2, only disables your active abilities. A lot of League crowd control has very odd coding logic. Like how airborne in League can magically lift you up in the air and hit ability that supposed to surpass you because... you aren't actually in the air based on League logic.

I don't mind a silence affecting abilities, that's what it's designed to do. But the fact it affects also summoner spells and items is a bit too much imo. That's why Dota, whilst having arguably much more cc and silences and many many disabling effects, has silence and mute be separate. Silence affects only active abilities, passives still work. Mute affects items only, which is generally used against those heroes that tend to buy active items that can heal, shield, heal, dispell them etc. Break affects only passives, so for heroes that are designed around a passive, or depend on them, like bristleback for his damage reduction, and phantom assassin for her evasion and high crit, break affects them greatly. Silence in League affects all of them; abilities, items, summoner spells (passives i'm not certain on). If silence only affected abilities, not items and summoner spells, then i wouldn't mind more champions having it in their kit. I rarely play support, but when i do, soraka is one of which that i do play, and the silence + root, is especially powerful if you know how and when to use it. I believe a lot of people underestimate it greatly.

In most RPGs, Silence is more of a "neutralize threat" tool than a killing tool - it doesn't work that way in League because Abilities are universal and used for almost everything. I think that to keep the spirit of the original Silence effect, it might be better to replace it with an effect that makes the target unable to affect enemies at all (as if all enemies were functionally Untargetable to them), but can still use abilities to move and defend.

This reminds me of a poor zed in WR. The man used his ult on me (I was playing as Soraka at the time) and i just casually walked into my own E before Zed's ult finished. And well Zed popped out of his ult and immediately got silenced and Rooted and I used that one boot enchant that does knockback to stop him from teleporting away into his shadows while miss fortune does her stuff on him.

i love silence bcs it feels unique i'd love to have for example a support that puts an aura around a enemy that silences anyone who gets close enough to them for the duration (doesn't silence the target themselves) so you could put that on a botlaner and it would force the support to adapt to the situation

@@kingol4801 That kind of tradeoff would only be useful on champions not reliant on their abilities, which is a very small number. It would also require incredible coordination since one player would basically be stealing another player's abilities, which would never work in solo queue.

You tell that to dota players who have a relatively cheap item with a targeted 5 second silence as an active and increased damage by 30% from all sources for the duration. Though in Dota, you may still use items while silenced, because there's another effect for it - mute. Which is much rarer and doesn't even appear in items.

Always wondered why League designers are so afraid of silences, coming from Dota 2, there are a good amount of champs that can silence and they usually last much longer (although most all crowd control lasts longer in Dota to be fair)

when you play another MOBA where silences are more common like Hots you feel this so much. a few days ago i was playing a game with kelthuzad ( a combo mage), and the enemy team had a stukov (a support with a long ranged channeled silence AoE), and he literally disrupted like 70% of all my combos, it was really annoying to playing against lol

Silence on an ADC could give them a niche of being a weapon against lineups with multiple mages or assassins, acting as self-peel, as well as a strong matchup against more spell-heavy ADCs like ezreal. I think this anti-ability style could fit there quite well and offer an alternative to the parry of nilah and samira.

in teamfights soraka's E is my favorite contribution, soraka E can shit on most combos, prevent some champs to attack high damage bursts and create traps, like i can negate akali's attacks or about anyone that favors tping to ally or others simply by putting an E beforehand, they get silenced and ccd for 2 seconds and they either die or wasted time

If you ever played Dota 2 and played against someone playing Silencer you will realize how awesome it is not to have so many silences in the game. Guy can mute your team for over 10 seconds if built for it.

But silencer sucks though, he is the worst support in dota(for years now) and a subpar carry too. He has play perfectly and even then he would still be even at most, he can't do anything alone and his silences are only defensive at best or a rare bkb bait. You are playing 4v5 with a silencer that the only way you would win is if the enemy fucks up. Even if he can silence for 10 seconds when there's multiple dispel items makes silence irrelevant.

I really think that if silences were common (like replace >50% slows by a silence or something like that), it would be handled a bit more seriously by riot, but a lot more respected by people while not changing that much the balance of the game Yasuo's wind wall exist, and it straight up invalidates some champs (sona for example) but it's still allowed in the game, you can maneuver around it, it's the same for silences i think

​@@nightcorechords5705lulu's polymorph is no longer its own cc. It is a combination of a few disarm being one of them (she also slows and silences during it). The other one is Quinn, however hers works only on non-champions for disarm. Champs become near-sighted instead.

I wish you made videos on heroes of the storm. Valeera, a melee assassin with permanent invisibility, has a 2.5 second, point and click silence that applies a bleed that does a good quarter of any squishies health in damage, and it f*cking teleported her to her target. To add to it, she also had a point and click, teleporting 1 second stun, 2 free targeted dashes, and one of her ults is alkalis W. Not the one we have now, no, it’s the same as the one she had right after her update. So she can just walk around in complete invisibility, teleport directly on to you from out of no where, silence you for 2.5 second and has enough burst to kill you before the silence is gone. Such an awful hero design wise. She’s legit worse than any champ in league aside from old Warwick.

Silencer from Dota 2 ported over to League would be very broken, especially with how different Silence as a Status Effect is handled in both games alone. Would probably be a Mid Laner or Support though since his basically an Auto Attacker with an Anti Ability EMP that’s Global as an ULT.

Lol silencer is one of the most shit heroes ever, silencer gets countered by so many items. To get him to be any useful you need to do so much things right and hope the enemy team fucks up their item builds. Silencer is also one of the most team reliant hero in the game and can't actually act on their own even when ahead. By midgame you're just a walking silence and you mostly use it to stop ganks which they get the kill anyway or the rare baiting out defensive items like bkb/lotus in a team fight that it doesn't matter most of the time. Thats why for years his the worst support and a subpar carry, it's basically playing 4v5 most of the time. Only way facing a strong silencer is you or your team fucked up somehow.

@@fish-kt4iq Eitherway: To stay in topic, even IF we entertained the idea of A Silencer Copy in LoL. It would have to warrant a rework of his Abilities. Like instead of stealing Intelligence (which doesn’t exist in LoL), Silencer in this case would steal Stats like Slark.

Silence to me is like a legacy of early League that they understand it won't be good for the game now or even in the future. With how silence is coded in League, it shuts you down from using any abilities, summoner spells and items. And with how over reliant League champions on their spell casting, silence is just a discouragement to that playstyle and unintuitive to understand. Meanwhile in DOTA 2, silence only disables your active ability. If you want to disable someone's passive, you need "break" status effect and if you want to prevent them from using item, you need "mute" status effect. These effects exist on some champions and can be accessed by buying items that can cause them.

kassadin doesn't have a silence, it only interrupts channeling, even if its written "silenced" it doesn't silence the target at all and therefore doesn't prevent you from using abilities

also give the fact that most silences are visually unenposing, specially in a teamfight, most of the time you wouln't be able to see a soraka E or whatnot theres a change you may not realize you are uncapable of using abilities and go for a play thinking you can do something but end but looking silly.

A very simple nerf to silence so that it can be seen again is to make that it only stop you from casting champion abilities. That's it. No stopping items and no stopping Summoner Spells. I'm honestly surprised Rito didn't do that already.

Yea but silence is one of the few ways to stop recalls and such, they can’t add silence to any new champs because the champs are already so overloaded. Look at soraka, Malz, and Cho, very basic kits with very basic passives.

Make it like Dota 2 where Silence only affects Champion Abilities and affecting Summoner Spells, Item Passives and Actives and Champion Passives are their own status effects. Also make it dispellable. Hell, make anything that isn’t a Hard Coded Stun be Dispellable.
