I believe this is one of those movies where the character wins by losing. He wants to live up to the heroic image he has of Jesus and Ferreira, but he must learn he is actually more like Kichijiro. By realizing that, he actually accesses a deeper level of spirituality in the end.

The human aspect shined before the Christian aspect of the message. In the end he represents the human condition of staying alive over losing your life for Christ. I think the film showcases that even priests fail in faith, and it's ok, they have their weaknesses too. It's hard being a priest, and especially missionaries.

Wrong. If you actually look at Japanese History. Plenty of these Japanese Christians kept Practicing there faith in secret. So much that when Foreigners Came back in the meiji restoration. The Japanese actually believed these Japanese Christians had died out. But when the Missionaries came back around 20,000 Hidden Christians came out of the woodwork that would go on to join the new Churches@@fernman2162

The theme of the movie was that Rodrigo’s determination to live the heroic life of Jesus distorted how Jesus really lived. Jesus was willing to be humiliated, defeated and absolutely submitted to save others. Rodrigo was willing to let others be humiliated, defeated and absolutely submitted to save himself

This. Also, I hate how there is not enough focus about the martyrs. All the priests did was downplay the influence of faith, the meaning of kindness & love. The martyrs were living in a feudal world... then comes some people preaching what they did not understand but that kindness inspired them, it gave them freedom from the oppression & atrocities of life. They were free, the martyrs discovered their own personal Christ to be free & alive forever.
@ensen9496
@ensen9496 4 жыл бұрын
But Rodrigo was willing to be humiliated and even be killed. He told the inquisitor that if he's going to hurt anyone, hurt him (Rodrigo) instead. But the inquisitors learned their mistakes that instead of killing the priests/missionaries, they'll instead kill the followers until the priest apostasize, not even when the followers apostasized. Basically the Japanese put the lives of the followers on the hand of the priest. Renounce = they live, Don't = they suffer a slow painful death. Rodrigo's main problem is his own view of christianity, he's starting to compare himself to Christ. We cannot truly and fully live the life that Jesus did when He was on earth, because we're not perfect but He is. He battled against his own thoughts, Jesus did not. Rodrigo viewed the stepping on the tablet as if he will, in his heart, betray Jesus fully, but we've got to remember that He's our Father, not just our God. A Father understands when his son makes mistakes, how much more our God the Father who is the creator of all things understand how weak the flesh and mind of a human is, that's where His grace, love and mercy always wins
@Gantaipao

Your defination is just one way to look at it. Which is truly not the truth. Despite Rodriguez want to be like the Jesus and want to suffer. He wanted an answer which in the end wanted to be die with the followers but the inquisitors knows that killing him won't do good instead they want to turn around it so that the followers look at their priest defeats and let the Christianity die itself. You could compare a direct parallel That Jesus had to suffered physical pain and Rodriguez had to suffered emotional pain.

Excellent commentary. I saw "Silence" and I found it unutterably sad. I could see why the missionaries broke their faith (apostatized). The circumstances were terrible. I guess what I heard in the silence was that Christ understood that humans are fallible and that's why they need to be forgiven when they abandon their faith. As a Buddhist myself, It didn't seem like a lovely story of redemption. It was a horror story of what happens when you lose your faith completely.
@Gantaipao
@Gantaipao 3 жыл бұрын
Well, as a Christ follower let me correct. One thing. Christ & God already know that human need to be forgiven that's why he sent his only son in human form to be the bridge b/w Him (The Lord) and Human. He is the way... So, Forgiveness is easily done just by asking forgiveness and admiting as Christ as the savior. That's the most important. Plus, in the movie abandoned was more like they suppressed by not showing because for others. One more I have to add :- Statues etc does not mean nothing (written in Bible) so step it or not formality or not it's more towards the person perspective than The Lord because Lord never wanted a statue or idolized figures of any kind etc (written in Bible). In conclusion :- God has nothing to do with human materialistic things he only need is from us that we love him and have faith in him (yes not to show other you can secretly do it because this is also written in Bible that prayer and worshiping can be done alone inside a lock room than showing someone else that you do this stuff).

Japan not only was never colonized it wanted itself to colonize china and korea. It took two nukes , a declaration of war from Russia plus the capitulation of its axis allies to finally give in during WW2. I studied 3 years the language and have family living there. They are not your African or American country you could humiliate, enslave its people and even torture into christianity. I agree with a lot of what you say, however in this scenario failing in your faith is actually being successful. Rodrigues realised it was pride and ego clouding faith and it is not about renouncing god in public as losing your faith but practicing in the silence which determines a deeper spiritual being of faith. So therefore it is a positive testament of faith

I'm glad you realized this. Alot of people think that was Jesus's voice at the end, and I'm like omg open the Bible. I agree this is tackles Christian themes WAY better than something like God's Not Dead, but as a film, It was cyclic, needed some music and was way too long. Now I haven't seen the Last Temptation of Christ but is there not a sex scene with Jesus and Mary Magdalene? How on earth does that show Jesus overcoming temptation? It's pretty easy to see why the Catholic Church had a problem with that...
@Palmieres
@Palmieres 6 жыл бұрын
Wesley Tomsky In The Last Temptation the sex scene is not real, but rather an hallucination Jesus has while on the cross, where he is presented with the possibility of escaping the crucifixion (via miracle), fall in love, get married and have a family as a normal rabi would. But for that to happen he would need to renounce his role as humanity's saviour. And he doesn't, he accepts the sacrifice instead. Maybe it's because I'm not religious, but I think that was a brilliant thought exercise and proof that belief can be incredibly powerful.

Great work with this analysis! One thing you didn't touch on, though, is the theme of misplaced trust in tangible, religious objects (i.e. the cross) as opposed to Jesus Christ. The final shot seems to take advantage of this. We assume he's still a Christian because, in death, he clings to this religious symbol. But I wonder if this is a false assumption. Even if his identity as a priest remained a part of him even in death, this does not mean his personal faith remained. In one interview Scorsese mentions how symbols and rituals can be comforting, but they in themselves are not markers of a real, personal faith. It seems to me that Baron's basic assumption here is false, or at least incomplete. What do you think?

I 100% agree. Many times it seems to turn into idolatry when the main focus should be on the figure. Sure, your outward appearance may display one thing but it's your actions and spirit that determine who you really are.

The Jesuits go into Japan with very arrogant notions of how what are really the trappings of their religion are based on reason and are universal. But we understand from the standpoint of Japan how bizarre and absurd these ideas seem. I live in Japan now, so this point really resonated with me.

The real world has a way of testing everything you think you believe. This movie had a ton of depth and meaning to me because of my own personal experience of chasing Jesus and attempting to be Jesus. The sun/son should wake many up. Also...It reminded me of the first time I saw and understood the main symbol of Jesus(him being on a cross suffering and or dead) as being a WARNING.

I found the movie to be sinister, systematically dismantling the faith of believers, to the point of losing the faith. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. -Matthew 16:25

I want to answer these things about Bible which you can use to interpret with the Movie. 1) We ask for Forgiveness and Admit that Christ is our savior. That's all. Yes, any kind of sin can be forgiven it just you have to truly admit about your confession to God. 2) God doesn't like statues, idolizing etc (written in Bible) he only want your love and faith. That's all. So all those formalities of us having statues or symbols means nothing to him. I guess these 2 point is the most important. There can be said many more but leaving these 2 because alot of people are taking in a wrong way.

This film main theme is you denying God before men. What does that kind of Faith makes you? Lost men of god. Hidden Faith that like lanterns not to shine on others but closed, will eventually died out. But is such men eventually really died in God's eyes? Its uncertain, thats the message implied. And the lesson is no men should bear the weight of someone elses death. The hidden death trap the japanese laid out was not killing them instantly, but instead makes them with weak Faith to step christ images, promising them free life, but then still torture them anyway in front of the Priest so that that the Priest feeling guilty of innocent lives being tortured despite their denouncing of christ. That is Cruel. Either way the japanese wins, whether they insisting, it makes the civils hates Priest or the Priest denouncing christ, then the civils see the example. Because the danger lies on the church politic will eventually creeping on japan, that would be disastrous for that nation. More christian means more padres coming, and eventually the death of a tradition and politic shifting. Thats why japanese saw it dangerous, not christ but the churches influences.

It is not believable that a priest on a dangerous mission suddenly starts telling people to renounce christ to end their suffering because he is so concerned for their well being. He would have known that they would be dammed and that fate is far worse. It's one thing to renounce under duress of pain, it's another to tell others that earthy life is more important then the afterlife. This is not a belivable senario. He is not like Peter. He never repents and comes back to Christ, unlike Kichicheroo. I was waiting for some sort of saving grace in the end ,which never came. This is a terrible film, and I cant understood how can Catholics embrace this apostasy glorification.

Your example of Peter is kinda contradicting. Peter renounced Christ before others, three times. Peter was a broken man, like the main character... but faith & Christ is to bring death to such broken men, to give them life through humility & kindness. Like Christ did with Peter.

Silence is not a film about Christianity, simply tells us the story of a sad human failure. I say that is not Christian because lacks one fundamental thing wich is HOPE. The only thing present in the film is instead DOUBT, which is also common to Christianity, but only until the moment in wich you are called to take a choice between faith in Jesus and disbelief. That's it. In Silence DOUBT is not overcomed by an act of faith, instead until the very end of the movie the only thing that lasts is this feeling of incertitude and as just sad doubt. This lead me to say that there is very little of the "Christian feeling" in this film, in his protagonist and in his filmmaker. Unfortunatly it is very much a JESUITIC film, in the sense that it confuses FAITH with simples wanderings around God, wich only few times can lead you to Him.

I don't know about Roman Catholic missionaries, but modern missionaries would not just barge into another culture like bulls in a china shop. They would spend time with the culture, learn about the indigenous religions and myths. They would operate under the presupposition that the culture was pre-prepared in their religions and myths with analogies into which the message of the gospel can be related. The old thing of missionaries assuming that all the belief systems of other cultures are of the Devil®, therefore need to be aggressively supplanted are not so much the SOP of current missionaries. Americans are control freaks, so it isn't very unusual to find pastors and television evangelists there that are controlling and accusing of non-believers. I think that a better example of a missionary tale was The Mission (Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro), the true story of Jesuits in South America going to the indigenous, and being swept away by the crosscurrents of European politics. Touching on the themes that were pertinent to the time when the movie was made, that of Liberation Theology... No, I don't identify myself specifically as a Christian. I am everyone who identifies themselves as a Christian, I am everyone who does not identify themselves as a Christian, I am everyone. GAME OVER... "He who sees himself as everything is fit to be guardian of the world. He who loves himself as everyone is fit to be teacher of this world"... Tao Te Ching

I feel to save others being tortured Rodriguez renounced his faith and thats what the word teaches us to help one another and help more than what one can do for himself and also jesus died already for all of humanity and he would want the same thing for us to help others even in the risk of Rodriguez bringing judgement on himself. Its also mentioned in the book that our belief shall be within and not into images and idols of jesus so therefore even if he is stepping on jesus image the faith should b in his heart. One more thing Rodriguez was ready and asked to bring the torture in the pit to himself but instead more lives were tortured there instead of himself and to save them he did what was needed to be done earlier. . . Anyone if iam wrong please iam open to hear your views on that!?

I think you're very wrong with your interpretation. Our main character isn't a hero. But he's not a martyr. I think he actually realises by the end the jesuits were wrong, and that proselytizing isn't some noble act. That his faith is his alone.

I watched half of the film, it has a strong message but for me most people are getting the wrong idea. To die a martyr is the perfect thing you can do as a Christian. We are called to live in the faith and to forgive those who hurt us. What they did to the Japanese faithful and the priest is unjust but they helped them to the impossible which is dying for their faith. They wouldn’t do that if they had faith in god. Because to die is Truely better to be with god

If anybody takes offense to what I'm about to say. I truly apologize and it's not my intentions. I just want to make this clear first. I believe in God for my own [personal reasons and experiences]. But I'm not a religious person ✋Let me explain. I believe in a higher power then myself. And I choose to call him,her,it God. But if it makes [you] the reader feel better I'll call him,her, it... fluffy pants. I don't believe in [religious teachings]. Meaning I believe that I shouldn't have to do certain rituals to please God or.... for lack of a better word hate certain groups of people just because they call God or [fluffy pants] by a different name. And yes I know that's not the only reason why they hate. With that being said, I think your missing the point AtZ. And being a little biased. The point being no matter how they [think] they "broke you". God knows what's true in your heart, oh I apologize fluffy pants....P.S he doesn't step on it cuz he chooses the mortal world over his faith. He does it cuz God told him it's alright so is to stop the suffering of others.♯☮❤🤘

Depends on which one you are talking about, but conflating the two is wrong. The Church is always spreading itself, both to colonized and non colonized regions. Obviously its easier and often faster to do it in colonized but that does not mean the religion caused the colonization or vise versa. The example of Japan kinda proves the point, Japan was never colonized, yet its culture did shift to a more western fashion over time. As far as I know Christianity was always a small minority in Japan and Japan was never colonized.

The implied(?) unintended (?) message of the book and the film is a falsification of Christ teaching .Our Saviour never praised apostasy -under any circumstances. The apostasy veiled in compassion serves to create a caricature of Christianity - as mistaken stubborn, irrational ideology, caricature eagerly welcomed nowadays by left oriented audience. It is no surprise therefore that while Christian culture is now conveniently ignored - this particular movie is ...somehow not:) It serves well to dilute and perfidiously distort what the core of Christianity is - fidelity to Christ. By apostatising the priest simply sinned -and turned his life into vegetative state. Those who were responsible for tortures were those who inflicted them -not the missionaries .

You failed to explain the context and thus arrive to a false and very ignorant conclusion that Rodrigues failed. You do not understand Japan and you slept through history class. It took two nukes, capitulation of its major allies, a Russian declaration of war and endless bombing to stop them in Ww2. And even then the US did not dare to hang its emperor like they were doing in Germany with top leaders. Rodrigues did not exactly fail, he underestimated the Japanese elite's resolve and intelligence. I studied 3 years japanese, went there 2wice and have family living in Japan. Remember that Japan is not your Latinamerican or African country, never was strictly colonized like China next door. Those priests were not there to find Ferreira because they could have just said that to the Japanese, paid some ransom to take him back home. they were there for their ambition to also make Japan christian so your soldier behind enemy lines analogy does not work. Try more the Vietnamese war. After the Chinese and French had failed to control it the Americans still went there to get their ass kicked out despite the US military superiority in numbers and technology. The US did not fail as a country but failed to understand Vietnamese historical resolve to defend to their last man.

This movie is a master piece. This isn't sad for me at all. I'm so happy to watch this movie atleast after years of it's release. Being an athiest, I watched 'silence' and learned a lot of things. Rodriguez believes that Jesus is his God. But we can see his situations changing and fading his faith right from his first meal in Japan. Japan kills people believing Buddhism. Movie is picturize in Christianity point of view. I saw the story conveyed few points in Buddhism point of view which accually makes sense. People died for believing in Jesus. Why would God be so silent? He should answer. When did he answered? Never. Because there is nothing like God. It's just some imaginary creators who never exist. After Rodriguez converting into Buddhism, he is not so sinned. He is so sad for what he done ofcource. But what happened to his sin? If there is no sin? What are those Christians died for? Nothing. It's way more complicated than that. Many Japanese wanted to practice their faith. Many of the powerful in Japan (Samurai) didn't like the Western influence of Christianity, and were also brutal. Nagasaki is a major city for Japanese Christians for centuries. 🙂
