“This show can’t scare me anymore. That’s not what it is.” Perfectly said. Exactly. It’s so much more, and that’s the genius of Mike Flanagan. Loved re-watching this on your channel! Thank you for the reaction!

This show is one of the best examples of choosing how to tell a story in two different time periods and deciding when to reveal key moments. This is simply sublime storytelling.

36:18 “At the end of it, he did, he fixed it” I don’t think I have seen anyone else say that but it is true. Hugh was always the one trying to fix things and he did it. You have a lot of great insights into things. I hope you do more shows by Mike Flanagan. I’m already enjoying your Buffy reactions.

This is, in my opinion, one of the few perfect shows out there. Mike Flanagan is a master, and all the cast are just phenomenal from start to finish. It expertly encompasses and explores the ideas of grief, trauma and family, and I wouldn't change a thing about it. Nell's speech in the Red Room brings the tears every time I watch it, then they don't leave until the episode ends. Beautiful ❤️ Do you have any plans to watch the other Flanagan shows (Bly Manor, Midnight Mass and the Fall of the House of Usher)? They all offer something unique, but Midnight Mass is my favourite outside of Hill House, and I think, from the way you've responded to this show, that you'd really appreciate them. Whatever you do next, thanks for sharing your journey :)

It's a minor point but I appreciate the bit you said about hypocrisy. Inconsistency is a part of being human, and it doesn't invalidate when you're right about something just because you've been wrong there before.

If I'm correct, one possible ending for this show was suppose to be that in the scene that Luke blows out the two year cake, you see the red room window behind him, suggesting that they didn't get out. They didn't go through with it and I prefer the ending we got, but still interesting to know
@JhadeSagrav11 ай бұрын
Also that the cake being red is supposed to be a hint, right?

Poppy is shown as an evil force, but do we know if she was that way before she died? Tolkien talks of eternal life as a curse, and mortal beings being gifted with an end to their lives. Poppy talks to Liv about the nightmares of watching her children die, which must have been a reality for Poppy as an eternal being within Hill House. Everyone she loved grew old and died outside the house whilst she stayed trapped inside, with the knowledge that her nightmare would never end. She's known as being insane, but wouldn't facing such an eternity make anyone lose their sanity?
@JhadeSagrav11 ай бұрын
Dang, that's a very deep thought. Maybe some creature who is meant to be immortal can handle it without losing their mind (or maybe due to not having one like those immortal jellyfish dudes), but i wonder if a story has ever explored the idea that any mortal gifted with immortality will eventually go insane from grief. Doctor Who does have a character ("Me" in S9) who is just this young woman that is accidentally gifted immortality. She doesn't lose her sanity, but... _it's sad, and it's beautiful._
@holi11711 ай бұрын
The story tells of her being in an asylum, meeting her husband, then they moved back to hill house. She talks to Liv about her daughters death as she held her hand (and the description of that death mimics little abigail's rat poison tea death...) insinuating poppy killed her children... we also see that poppy's ghost does age up in some scenes, (not the old lady), so she was in that house for a long time. I believe she is also the one who bricked her husband up behind the wall.. poppy may have been driven mad in her younger yesrs by the house, but she certainly embraced it if that is the case. I wonder if she caused the house to become what it was through her own madness and crimes... creating that energy that was doomed to take more and more families

Please do The Haunting of Bly Manor too! When you rewatch this series -- because this is not a once-only watch -- you will find so many other details and foreshadowings that you missed the first time around. At first I was disappointed in the series for not being more faithful to the novel, and for centring a piece of proto-feminist literature on a male self-insert character, but it's just such a GOOD story that I let that go. There are other adaptations if I want a more faithful one. Watching this made to ready to watch anything else Mike Flanagan adapts, be it Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Henry James or anything else. Wouldn't an adaptation of The Woman in Black from Flanagan be so cool? The Haunting of Eel Marsh House.

Thank you for a beautiful reaction to this series. You really did it justice with your commentary (as you always do) and honestly your commentary actually added to my appreciation of the story. I hope you do Bly Manor as well, it features similar storytelling but also tackles completely new themes and changes things up considerably in comparison with Hill House, so nothing feels repetitive or stale as a viewer.

Way back in I think episode 1 or 2, we got a scene where the mom explains blueprints to Shirley and how houses are like bodies and they have a heart and veins and like an energy flow, so in hill house, the heart is the red room. There's something for me, whenever I watch Hill House that like as horrifying as the house is, it also wants to "protect them," in it's own twisted way by keeping them within it's walls and seemingly alive forever. Hill house is in a way the forever home that the Crane's wanted at the beginning of the series. I haven't really formed this thought into anything quite cohesive yet, but I thought I'd leave it here anyways cause it's been on my mind.

This show is so fantastic just the storytelling alone. But then theres all the secret ghosts added into the backgrounds as just a stunning amount of detail. And then so many easter eggs from the book are mixed in as well. The amount of detail in this show is truly incredible. The writing is like Shakespeare level amazing, especially with how they incorporated lines from the book. From the writing to the directing, the acting, the filming and producing, every single piece is just artistic genius.

This show turned me into a massive Mike Flanagan fan, and I absolutely loved your commentary on this show! I do hope you will react to "haunting of bly manor" & "the fall of the house of usher" down the road as well. For me though, nothing will ever match up to that final scene with Nell, she saved them and gave them closure and loved them unconditionally and I bawled. Brilliant show!

I'm glad you loved this show and I encourage you to watch also (and maybe react to) Midnight Mass, another great show by Mike Flanagan. I have also begun to watch your reactions to Buffy which is one of my favorite show and, as soon as I can, I intend to follow you on Patreon because I don't get enough of you (I mean of your inputs and analyses) with the short versions of your videos. Nice reaction, dude! An absolutely incredible series. Very, very good and marvelously executed. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it before although bits of it do remind me of "The Shining." I honestly felt like Fall of the House of Usher was missing the Flanagan "magic". It's a fun if you enjoy watching gruesome things happen to horrible people, but there's no beauty in it like there is in Hill House or Bly Manor.
