After watching the video of you confronting BJ about the money there was a point where Betty retreated to the back of the porch looking scared of BJ and I think it was Larry that said something to the effect that BJ threatens Betty and there home if she doesn't do what she wants her to. I don't know the look that came over Betty's face when she retreated back was very concerning to the point I was worried what was going to happen after you left. Remember Mark Betty and family are seniors and BJ has already exploited them financially who's to say she isn't abusing them physically and mentally. People on drugs will do desperate things to anyone even there loved ones to get there next fix you of all people know this. I myself only picked up the signs cause I work in the health field and adult abuse ( of ALL kinds) is drilled into us on a regular basis so we can see the signs of those under our care and take the appropriate action if needed.

That requires a bunch of legal protections for mark to do targetted payments like that. It's probably better if he sets up a conservatorship that pays rents or whatever. If he paid for their house to be fixed he would need their legal consent etcetc or they could sue him. It's sad but the way life is.

@@ginger-witchdo you mean a trust? A conservatorship is having control of someone’s money and life like Britney Spears. A trust allows you to deposit money and put stipulations on how the money can be used. The beneficiary has to be given the money by the trustee (mark or someone he’d like to appoint) who enforces the rules.

I thought the money was meant to fix up the house? So why didn’t that happen in the first place? Why did Mark just give them money when they asked for it. He should have hired contractors to fix it up as soon as the money was in there. This whole thing is a scam if you ask me . Mark knew what was coming. he gives them fish everyday, instead learning them to hunt fish on their own. so, he can purchase brand new house for them but in two months new house run by them will become shithole as this house they live in now, because they don't know how to work, provide, clean, take care off, etc. Conclusion: they cannot be on their own... providing limitless money to that family cannot result with anything good and productive and long term sustainable...

My vote on the Whitaker situation is... Make it clear that ALL money collected for them goes for a house and just buy them a double wide and put on their land. There will be room for everyone and may or cost a much as a house. You might even be able to find a good used one or discontinued model. They DO need new living quarters

IMO: Even if Mark raised the money to build them a new house, within a short period of time it will eventually look exactly like what they are living in now. They are not capable of being neat and tidy. They have lived this way their whole lives. None of them would know how to keep house in a clean and sanitary way. Also IMO Betty is a lot smarter then what everyone gives her credit for. I believe she is taken advantage of Mark and well aware of what she is doing to him. I wish the best for this family but they will never change no matter how much money you give them. They are not mentally capable of handling finances or establishing a clean way of living. Rebecca I have no words. Just that I wish him the best also!

I didn't hear Larry denying getting half of the money that they drained from Mark. All this coming to the surface has me even doubting that they actually paid anything for the home repairs that were done. I used to live in a neighborhood near a family that lived a lot like they do, wasting everything on junk, and getting different groups to do free repairs on their house. They sure had plenty money for cigarettes, lottery tickets and anything else they could think of though.

I have one critical comment for Mark. While your intentions were good, why weren’t safe guards set up from the beginning. While Betty might be the smartest of the bunch (and no ill intentions meant) but she’s still ignorant and dumb as a a box of rocks. Easily influenced by anyone. They didn’t take advantage of you. People took advantage of them through you. Betty doesn’t grasp the money or what was taken from her or her kinfolk. It’s incredibly sad. Timmy Loves you and it’s shown on all your visits. Mark, you've changed people's lives, but they're also changing yours. A lot of the issues are not easily solved, not by just giving money. I've truly grown to realize that many people need some level of either intermittent or constant intervention to live in the modern world - whether it's financial help, or physical help, or medical help. The sorts of institutions that would previously house such people have been shut down decades ago owing to abuse within the facilities, but what's left is people who are abused on the street and in even worse condition. As a society we need to take more social care of all our citizens.

Yes. It's said that if you really want to see what a family is like, watch how they behave when there is an estate to be distributed. This is the same thing, except it's money from Mark, not from someone's will. I've seen "good" families who "love" each other and "support" each other fight tooth-and-nail over a few measly thousand dollars...and never speak again. The amount of people here who are commenting as if they know the nuances of your personal and private relationship with the Whittaker family off-camera enough to tell you exactly what you should be doing now I think lends to your earlier lamentation of the problem with social media. Good job, you found my point: NONE of us know “zippo”. I’m not saying you shouldn’t be mad at Mark for not being clear where the money was going and what it was actually being spent on. I’m saying that there are a lot of people telling Mark what he SHOULD be doing and telling him HOW he should move forward with this family as if they know more about the Whittaker family, their needs, their lives, and whatever other challenges they face off-camera. Sucks that you lost a bunch of money, you guys must have really big hearts. But the complete mismanagement of these funds does not erase the fact that these people are still a vulnerable family living in destitution and squalor. These are people that obviously need serious help both financially and in getting away from the leeches that want to waste the money on drugs.

Hi Mark, I know you mean well but the extended family is stealing from them. A lot of money has been collected for this family and they still live in swallow, and house needs maintaining & up grades. Have you looked into a conservatorship for them to protect them and the money since you are the one raising the money for them? Peace ☮️

The smartest thing to do for the Whitakers is have a general contractor build them a open concept post frame house on a slab with polished floors with separate bedrooms around the perimeter. It would be alot cheaper than purchasing a house and would be easy to maintain and cheaper on taxes. Purchase a wood fired boiler to heat the concrete floor. The only problem with buying them a house or building something easy to maintain is the taxes every year because if there not being payed there going to loose it eventually unfortunately. I think the post frame house is the easiest and cheapest alternative for them. Please check into it before purchasing a house for them. It's not gonna cost anybody to get estimates from contractors. I'd be willing to help you with information. I've been in construction industry for 30yrs plus and I have alot of connections in that area and could probably work something out with the interior package as far as the drywall and painting part of it. We have a certified apprenticeship training program that might possibly donate the labor for training purposes. Let me know if you have any questions

Tough situation. Wish I had money for a Rebecca book but I also need a job. She is an icon though. Addiction is tough. Praying for them all, and that you can stay sane.
