Not a pencil line in sight. All by eye and in less than 20 minutes. My dad was the same. You sir, are a true craftsman and that spoon is beautiful. I enjoyed every minute of this video - thank you.

Nah, watch the cuts carefully, he replaces the work in his hands with something he prepared earlier, that's why he just hacks away with the axe and makes a lot of wood chips. It's all wood chips and mirrors. I am joking.... obviously

Well i would like to know what knife he is using to hog out that spoon. Its cutting across the grain like butter but could be his mad sharpening skills...what angle do you have on there man? And bam! Why didnt i think of using a hatchet to hog out the shape first....seems a no brainer...and man what a hook knife! Custom made? I wonder if pfiel/swiss made makes one like that

hi, I enjoyed to watch showing your wonderful skills. Can ou tell me where to get such a great hook knife?
@ogi224 жыл бұрын
Usually those are custom made knives. I'm planning on making a couple myself, because right now i'm using Mora and it's not the best one. It's ok as a starter knife, but gives my finger some bad blisters;) Try to google "hook knives" or "wood carving knives" and check for some local blacksmiths making them. I don't remember the website, but i know there were a few in UK making those tools.

So I got a lot of birch for spooncarving. Today I split a log and when carving I noticed dark spots and streaks in the wood... some green or brownish... these spots are about as big as a nails head, anyone knows what this might be?
@pvtpinecone7623 жыл бұрын
What finish would you use for a spoon like that? Something like linseed oil or beeswax?

Hi Timothy - Barn generally uses tung oil to finish his spoons - hope this helps!

Every time I watch one of these I curse myself for jumping straight into working with reclaimed wood, and not spending more time on green wood carving... that said, the upside is that I've been forced to get a lot stronger than I might have been otherwise! (Not that wood quality is everything, but even with my tools blisteringly sharp I sometimes have to work so much harder to get clean cuts like these).
