@@steffyincan They are indeed! They're adorable and not very afraid of humans, but they're also the most mischievous little bastards you can imagine lol well know for tearing rubber and wipers off cars, stealing food from in front of you, posing for photos while their friends tear your belongings apart and, most famously, they were responsible for dragging road cones to block a road every day after workers moved them to the side. I would say about 75% of people that live in NZ have no idea of the beauty that lies just outside the city! I live within an hours drive of three national parks and I am often staggered to learn how little people know about what lies just on their doorstep. I could show you caves, waterfalls, swimming spots, mountains, lakes and rivers that equal the beauty of anything anywhere in the world and nobody even goes there! I once hiked for eight days, on trail, without seeing another person! I can see that section of mountains from where I sit now!

Apart from the wonderful cinematography, the thing I love about this film are all the simple and very beautifully told stories that unfold. A drama made up of a series of scenes about encounters; the sheep mustering along a mountain gravel road, the Kea's descending on camp and creating a little mischief, the skin shredding scramble through native bush and tussock, wet feet/ wet socks, retreating because suddenly the ideal camping area turned to absolute custard, and desperately wanting to eat dinner whilst also being dinner for the sandflies. Many Kiwis will relate to these stories, they are part of our psyche. Well done for showing them so cleverly. No matter the story, it's how you tell it that matters.

Mate I could watch your footage for HOURS! It's beautifully captured. As a long time tramper/hiker born in NZ it evokes strong memories. More than anything it's that the focus is where you are not who you are; the landscapes you are passing through, the wildlife, the movement of light, water, changing typograhy. I'm not strongly against narrative for these types of videos but I have to say your approach is delightfully refreshing. How you captured some of the amazing footage I can only guess but "bravo!" my man. Your eye as a videographer(?) is well on point and renders the poignancy of where you are in the moment amazingly. Gosh, you are such a hardy outdoorsman. This is a film of buffeting wind and water, fierce gradients and progress through scratchy tangles. My favourite moment was the rainbow-hued cascade at 14.54, and the instant cut to you having a crushing deluge of a shower in it. I loved the keas (of course), and all the other birds. Amid all the strenuous activity, there is such a strong balancing element in all those shots of you sitting looking - the camera often shooting over your shoulder, or on your face as you look away from it to the view. The stills you put at the end of your videos seem to gather up these moments of looking, saying 'and this is what I saw'. Another formidable achievement in many dimensions of endeavour.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed feedback! I'm glad to hear that you appreciated the balance between challenging outdoor activities and moments of quiet contemplation in the video, that's definitely how I experience backpacking (the never-ending roller-coaster of ups and downs) and try to capture it. Thanks!

I just discovered you on KZbin, not sure how but I’m happy about that. Unbelievable videos and I just love the fact that it’s quiet -only with a little bit of nice music. I can see what’s out there and vicariously experience a lot of places through your videos! I’m so happy to see that there’s so much beautiful unspoiled earth still left.

Thank you very much for this cinematographic masterpiece, Harmen 😍 I've had the great pleasure to watch all of your so far 21 hiking videos in the YT. Each of them is a visual gem, result of certainly a lot of planning, walking back and forth for the camera, sweating and getting tired. And the results as your videos are wonderful! Thank you for sharing your adventures 💕

One of the very few videos out there which actually brings justice to beauty of this area in NZ. Great effort with the camera and thank you for documenting this for us. Such an inspiring piece of work!

Absolutely fantastic video!!! Loved it. My sister worked with a couple of lab workers from University of Utrecht that invited her to help with their lab in New Zealand many years ago. She has since retired. So I emailed this video to her to remember her time there. Thank you.
