Great content! Were you wearing Brooks Cascadia? What edition? The Gore-Tex ones? I’m interested to know why you chose those even through snow and water? Obviously you could’ve worn much more substantial hiking boots but you chose not to.

How do you maintain enough energy for the hikes? And is it black coffee you keep drinking? I would love to hear any tips for nutrition, calorie intake etc inspire me to feel more confident in doing my own hike this year. Watching from Warwickshire, UK

What were the yellow things on the tree bark that you pulled off and used to light the fire? Some kind of sap deposits?

I'm doing Kili in three weeks -- Feb. 11, 2025. Been checking out KZbin videos to see what it will be like. This is the most spectacular filming that I have seen. Sorry, but I just stumbled upon this video and haven't seen any other work by Harmen yet. Now I'll be searching for more of it. Very well done. I'm an old goat . . . going to be 73 in a few weeks. Thank you for this inspirational motivator!

Hoek is my very favorite solo trekker. His presentations are stunning and mesmerizing. You have stumbled upon the best. You have a treasure trove to watch. Got you beat. I am 82. I won't be doing Kilimanjaro or most of the other places Hoek goes but his videos take me there and I am glued to the screen. Good luck on your adventure coming up. I envy you but I finally cannot do that level of hiking. I still hike however and ski off the tops of mountains on black diamonds so not wasting away on a couch. The best to you.

This summer (which is winter in Argentina where I live), I had a solo hike to Mount Champaqui (2800 meters above sea level). The second day was quite exhausting (I was following an extended track that didn't always have well-defined trails). Going down from Mount Champaqui, I took an extra mile, trying to shorten the distance I had to walk on the last, 3rd day. I was camping at around 2300 meters above sea level, exactly the height I had spent the previous night at. I didn't expect anything unusual. Still, I had quite an awkward feeling. There were no symptoms. It just felt like I didn't have enough oxygen. I tried to fall asleep for around 2 hours with no luck. This is when I decided to take Ibuprofen and drink some sweet (very sweet) tea. I'm quite sure the reason was altitude multiplied by exhaustion.

I believe these films are God inspired, at the end we find Harmen's signature and a Biblical text. When I watch these videos I am reminded of Rembrandt, it is not just Rembrandt nor Harmen Hoak in the outcome of their art. Absolutely, out of this world. I believe noone would be able to reach Harmen Hoek as noone reached Rembrandt.
