Reminder that gryomancy is basically just running in a circle til you fall over and fall over on letters until you either form an intelliglble sentence or die. SH wiki: "Gyromancy is a method of divination in which a person spins around inside or walks the circumference of a circle drawn on the ground, the perimeter of which is marked with the letters of an alphabet. The divination is inferred from the letter at the position where the person either stumbles or falls across the circle's edge. The person would repeat the practice "...till he evolved an intelligible sentence, or till death or madness intervened". The dizziness brought on by spinning or circling is intended to introduce randomness or to facilitate an altered state of consciousness."

I don't know if someone mentioned it already on the streams, but this game had vibration feedback for the damage you took in the form of a heartbeat, the more damage you took, the stronger the heartbeat. This was the most accurate way you could assess actual damage (sadly the item screen doesn't do as good of a job). I was hoping you could play the next games on PS2 so you could experience that and more, plus those are kinda of the definitive versions and easier to run than on PC (but with the caveat of performance if you go the emulation route and the hardware can't handle it, Vinny played it fine though). Yes, the enhanced edition or whatever it's called is way better than vanilla PC, but it still has some issues, especially audio wise, and possibly some other post processing stuff.

Not surprising, while the graphics can be a bit blocky, the atmosphere was also heavily carried by general design and especially sound design that hasn't aged at all (except for VAs). More surprising is the fact that Woolie is finally willing to play horror games for real.

Pat calls it the Evangelion effect, but it can be applied to a lot of other older franchises that inspired newer ones. I call it the John Carter effect since the Barsoom books is one of the progenitors of modern sci-fi. It inspired Star Wars, Star Trek, James Cameron’s Avatar, and Superman. So when you go back to the original material (or better yet, watch the 2012 film on Disney+), you’ll see these different tropes that have been used over and over again for other pieces of work. Shit’s mind-blowing, man.

I find myself going backwards than looking forward for games. I really like the more subdued feel and the experimental designs. One of the games I have, Enemy Zero, is just Alien (the Movie) in FMVs with bits of real time first person "dungeon" crawling and all the enemies are invisible. All you have is this really loud beeping sound that gets more intense as you get closer to something. It's pretty simple but really effective at making you panick.
@casanovafunkenstein50902 жыл бұрын
If you have fond memories of that game I'd recommend looking into D and D2, also by WARP software and headed up by the same director, Kenji Eno. All three of the games are strange and creative horror experiences that push boundaries (though D is incredibly dated, so it may be a bit obtuse and difficult to get into now that the CG-rendered FMV graphics are no longer even slightly impressive) and share the same characters, though in unrelated situations with different relationships to one another. I would definitely welcome someone trying to make something with a similar vibe to E0 with a bit more refinement and some expanded mechanics
@FightCain2 жыл бұрын
And for those really movie lovers, one of the version of the Soviet movie, “Man with a Movie Camera”, Michael Nyman (of GATTACA, the movie Woolie assumingly talked about), reused the soundtrack of E0.

The one Silent Hill puzzle that I have to say has not aged well is the Shakespeare Hard Mode puzzle in Silent Hill 3. I did it for the first time a few months ago and that puzzle requires the player to have a fairly in depth knowledge of a number of Shakespeare’s more famous works and the game gives you no in game material to refer to in order to solve the puzzle. It’s a total contrast to say Silent Hill 2’s coin puzzle where all the clues are in the text of the puzzle.

OK calm down. Let's not get worked up over the nuances of what inspired what from Japan, especially stuff that wasn't localised or wasn't widely available. It's easy to talk about what inspired Star Wars without devaluing Star Wars because the stuff that inspired SW was and remains easily accessible, for a counter example. I bet most Japanese people treat Eva how we treat SW. Or how they treat Star Wars cause SW was heavily influenced by Akira Kurosawa. They've even done Kabuki adaptations of SW.

It's the problem of not being Japanese. Like, I imagine the Japanese fanbase see Eva as we see Star Wars because the stuff that inspired these franchises are more readily available to the respective cultures. Plus the creators wear their influences on their sleeves - Lucas never shied away from his love of Flash Gordon and Pulp adventure and Anno never said he didn't love Ultraman.
@SeruraRenge112 жыл бұрын
Pat the only people who think Evangelion was doing something new were westerners who weren't watching the 20 years of anime that existed before Evangelion in Anno's life because the show really is a mishmash of things from other shows that he likes. It sucks that people nonchalantly sleep on 1 and skip to 2 & 3 in most cases. This has been solidified by Konami since 1 was left off of that collection, as bad the collection itself was, it indicates that 1 wasn't a money maker worthy of even a shoddy remaster to Konami. And before you say "Well its hard for people to get a hold of a copy of Silent Hill 1 specifically these days of course they wouldn't play it" know that this statement is complete nonsense. Other than SH1 being a very emulatable game on pc, its also still available, as of April 2024, on the ps3 psn for 6 bucks as a ps1 classic. If you got a ps3 you can nab this game for cheaper than it is to buy lunch. There is no excuse to not play the og. I honestly think most people are just averse to older media like when you'd hear a classroom of dumb kids sigh when a movie is in black and white.
