I think James' sexual frustration is far more complicated than "he wants his hot, sexy wife back." He's more three-dimensional than that. He does feel sexually frustrated but he also feels guilty for his urges. People will argue that the Maria ending shows him as a callous sex pest who just wants a hotter Mary. The illness stripped Mary of her beauty and her kindness. James hates himself for his inability to cope with her dying. He is not a selfish, horny man - he is a desperate, grief-stricken, lonely man who has entered a dissociative fugue state. I don't say this to defend his actions. He's guilty, but he definitely knows it and the town is punishing him accordingly.

In the beginning of the game I didn’t like James, since it was obvious he did something / didn’t want to admit to himself something. (I’ve never seen silent hill story before) As the story went on I got that same exact feeling. He isn’t just a guy that hated his sick wife because she got sick and wasn’t hot just an inconvenience. I think he was consumed by his guilt of loving her but the pain of watching someone die makes you want them gone. It’s like torture and you just want them to “die already”.

Just like we see in the first game, the town reflects what's inside of people. All 3 of them believe they deserve to be punished. Even pyramid head isn't punishing James, just echoing his own actions. *SPOILERS ALERT* Skipped to the end of the video to hear your thoughts (as I have already completed the game myself) and here are a few things worth mentioning: 1. Laura and Mary were in the same hospital, but it is likely not a Brookhaven Hospital. It's probably St. Jerome's Hospital located in Ashfield, as Mary often refers to nurse as Rachel and we know from SH4 that Rachel worked in that hospital, not the Brookhaven. Also, Brookhaven hospital is a mental institution and Mary was diagnosed with a skin disease (maybe cancer but not 100%) so it would explain why she would not be in Brookhaven. 2. Laura is very much alive, not dead and definitely not a ghost. She however, does not perceive Silent Hill as James or Angela or Eddie do. For her, SH is most likely looking like a child's playground or something a child would find nice to be in. That's why she locks James in that room with a boss fight, because for her there is no such monster, for her it's just some nice looking room. You got the "Leave" ending where James and Laura probably bury Mary in SH cemetery and afterwards leave that place and James maybe ends up adopting Laura (as she is an orphan) and Mary mentions that if things were different, she would adopt her. 3. Silent Hill consists of 3 parts: The real world (people live normally, all is good), The fog world (covered in fog with monsters walking around), The other world (which is the worst one and basically looks like a nightmare). 4. Silent Hill's backstory is filled with mass murders, "demonic" worship etc. and so the town attracts occultists and lunatics in general. 5. James killed Mary days prior to coming to Silent Hill and her body can be found in the backseat of his car covered with blankets and in one of the endings, you notice he is looking back at the body. For him she died 3 years ago because for him she "died" the moment she got sick. 6. As you said, the remake does not get any better. What an amazing experience it was to play it.

How did Laura got into Silent Hill I thought she is sick, no?
@allthenights19173 ай бұрын
@@popsickle6207 Yeah this usually causes confusion but here's a short breakdown. Laura is an orphan (it is unclear how her parents died) and she was staying at St. Jerome's hospital (for unknown reasons, it's never mentioned what she suffered from), where she met and befriended Mary. It is also uknown how she got to the Silent Hill but it's possible that she ran away from the hospital or even orphanage, met Eddie somewhere along the way and they both wound up in Silent Hill. This would explain why she is friendly towards him and they can be seen talking and joking with each other throughout the game (in OG and in the remake).

So yeah, you could say that it is a speculation as it was never confirmed by the game designers but it is a logical conclusion based off of the limited information that we have. Mary loved SH and told Laura great things about it, showed photos etc. so that's why she most likely travelled there. And the part of them not being in Brookhaven but in St. Jerome's is like 99.9% true.

1:14:28 Yeah, the Born From a Wish DLC re-contextualized Maria in a tragic and horrifying way. She's not just a figment of James' imagination, she's a full-blown person with her own perspective, experiences, and inner thoughts. Created by the town as nothing more than a tool to punish James, she gets killed over and over just to torment him. He's the only living person she's ever met or could ever meet, the person she was created for, and she can't convince him to stay with her. And even in the ending where James tries to leave with her, the town gives her Mary's illness to continue the cycle of suffering. She was doomed, utterly doomed from the start.

That just adds to the sense that the game has about its other characters, in that sometimes you're just not able to do anything to help. Characters like Eddie and Angela were already beyond helping by the time we find them, so them dying was probably the best thing for them considering how irreparable the damage to them was shown to be. Maria in a way could be a representation of that helplessness James has towards others, and she was made to mimic the same thought process Angela and Eddie both have towards their situations.

(3) It is purposefully ambiguous throughout the game and different endings allow for different interpretations. (4) Mary's body only seems to be in the car in the remake, not the OG. The Remake has a few strange design choices, like removing important lines from the final letter that Mary reads during the ending. So take stuff like that with a pinch of salt.

18:04 I don't think Angela fully tackled her problems there. Her biggest issue was her guilt over killing her father, even though he very much deserved it. James still had her knife when he encountered Abstract Daddy, which is the core of her trauma. To 'resolve' her trauma, she'd have to be the one to use the knife to kill it, herself. Silent Hill is an amoral force, just reflecting things. It does have an awareness, though. And a sense of irony, even if that irony is deeply, DEEPLY cynical. The way it affects James is pretty clear, too. He's lying to himself. All his enemies are abstract edges of his guilt and repressed desire, but they all lack faces. They aren't 'true' because he refuses to admit to himself what he's guilty over. He abandoned Mary. He wanted intimacy but couldn't bear to tell her he didn't have desire for her anymore.

as someone who experienced something similar to angela, that whole sequence defiantly strikes a cord with me, it’s accurate asf about how it feels, even the boss fight feels like a panic attack. the scene actually makes me feel super seen, when others never believed me. I always appreciate when games portray these kinds of subject matters in a respectful and careful way. Sh2 almost holds you hand and tells you it’s okay, even if it’s a horror game and made to disturb people. there’s a saying i feel fits, “art is meant to disturb the comforted and comfort the disturbed.” such a well executed sequence, it doesn’t make me feel upset at all even if it’s highly disturbing, it just makes me feel like someone believes me. I will always value art that gives a safe place for those it’s relating to.

It's not necessarily James that's in a loop, but the player certainly is. That's just my take on it tho, cuz I don't want there to be a singular interpretation of the game to be locked in or confirmed, I think it works better--much like Silent Hill itself--if it's just an experience that's intepreted differently by each person that plays it ^^

3:09:30 It's believed that Pyramid Head represents several things, one of which being James' guilt over having killed people, the 2nd Pyramid Head only appears after you kill Eddie, and it seems that the eggs they have are representative of the 2 lives James has taken, the Rust-Colored Egg for Mary (due to it being an older murder than Eddies and/or because the rust is meant to parallel her illness) and the Scarlett Egg for Eddie (because it's a more recent murder and/or it's representative of how Eddie died violently hence it being blood red).
@RynKimVay3 ай бұрын
He's meant to remind James he's human and to make him remember what he's done. The inspiration for Pyramid Head's role in the story comes from a bit of dialogue in Jacob's Ladder (fantastic film, by the way), and I think it just adds more weight to what you've just said: The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you. They're freeing your soul. If you're frightened of dying and... and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all.

There are similar moments with Eddie, Angela, and Laura that force people to think critically about them. Literally helping people understand the emotional state of the characters better strengthening the player's empathy. This is probably one of the biggest strengths of the Silent Hill franchise a strength that you usually find in books. For me the character that did this the most was Heather Manson from the third game. Silent Hill 2 and 3 are more art than game and we are very lucky to have them. I hope they remake 3 too. It's unknown what illness Laura had/has, but Mary seemed to believe Laura would go on to live a long happy life so it must not have been anything serious.
@aplix7472 ай бұрын
Silent hill is about moving past trauma. The phrase "Life goes on" summarises this. Both Eddie and Angela allow their trauma to destroy them. Eddie lets himself become the fat, disgusting monster he believes everyone thinks he is, because he truly thinks he has no other option but to be the villain. Angela throws her life away the moment she realises she'll never have her revenge or peace and kill her mother. She's convinced she'll never fully recover. James is the only person not consumed by the idea of "Revenge", and we see this when he repeatedly pushes Maria away, knowing that it's not right to try and fix things and let the town win. The town seems to finally lose Almost every monster in the town is a distorted version of Mary. It starts off abstract. As a puking body or some pairs of legs, but gradually the monsters start to resemble her more and more as James allows himself to think about her and the truth becomes clearer. The fog is literally James disassociating from his actions. Pyramid head is the only exception. It actually seems to be actively killing and destroying the monsters, like an emotionless executioner tasked with a horrible job of slaughtering his wife. This is how James saw himself when he killed her. Pyramid head represents who james really is and the truth keeps hunting him down.

I don't condone Eddie's actions of hurting animals, but it does make perfect sense why it would bring a sense of power to a person who's been on the receiving end for far too long. When you suddenly are given the means to subject that form of mistreatment or abuse onto another creature or person, it can make the aggressor feel a sense of empowerment, as twisted as it might be. I don't believe it's as simple as Eddie being born a psychopath and been such a way since birth, but his environment certainly helped him become that way. Mental issues are very complicated and trauma could scar any ordinary person into becoming a twisted form of themselves, physically or mentally.

Eddie doesn't see the dead bodies as James. James sees them as himself because in his deepest mind he knows what he has done and he believes he should die for it. Eddie sees, what I assume, is his bully who he probably did kill in the real world. Silent Hill has people see different things. How James sees things is not how the others view it. Eddie always sees things as frozen and cold, Angela always sees the fire, James always sees the rotting. But what I find odd with James is that he could see Angela's monster but neither Eddie or Angela could see his.

I thought maybe it had something to do with their repeated meetings. Their perspectives just started to bleed into one another. Yes, James had the knife, but he didn't have anything of Eddie's. There weren't any meetings where James' monsters were nearby, where Angela or Eddie might have seen them. But for all we know, James fighting Abstract Daddy and the cold room could have been a plot device, just so we could understand what the others were going through, and what the town was doing. Nothing deeper than that. Maria could see James' monsters, but Laura couldn't, and Laura probably couldn't see Maria, else she might not have run away (if James' mistook her for Mary, why wouldn't Laura? Unless she didn't look like Mary to her). I don't know, so much to unpack in this game.

Masahiro Ito the monster designer had said originally that James only sees Abstract Daddy the way he himself would perceive it and is a projection of his own inner demons that are familiar to the manifestation of Angela's monster, but Angela ultimately herself sees Abstract Daddy differently than James. Notice this little detail in James and Angela interaction 14:45? When Angela raised her voice to James... James: "Calm down" Angela: "Don't order me around!" James: "I'm [stutters] not. I just... [exhales] It's okay, it's over." This empasizes 2 thing: 1. She's so broken that when James asks her nicely to calm down she mistook it as an order, which reminded her trauma her Dad and her brother ordering/forcing her to do "things" that she didn't want. 2. That stutter and exhale in his sentence after Angela raised her voice to him it shows his frustration and trying to be patient. After being reminded of him verbally abused by Mary in their last years. Man, what a BEAUTIFUL writing.

I took his stutter as being empathetic to Angela's issues. Her demeanor is meek from the get go in her interactions with James, and it's apparent that she went through a lot of trauma and abuse. He stutters around Maria as well, but that is because she looks like his wife.
@rodrex63163 ай бұрын
@biteofdog hum... i see, i took it has the opposite tho, james seems like someone with some anger issues, he seems way to depressed to let it out but sometimes it slips, throughout the game james starts raising his voice especially when interacting with angela, i think james starts to understand what she went through and realises that the best outcome is to keep calm, i know people with anger issues and stopping and taking a breath is normally a way to calm themselves down. And his wife when writing to laura seems to say stuff like "yeah i know he seems mean but deep down he is a nice person" which seems like Laura has seen james being abusive at least verbally. but this is of course my point of view, the beauty of silent hills is that nothing is spelled out, like a normal and realistic person, stuff happened to that person that we, as spectator, did not see or where there to fully understand

Man, seeing the ending made me tear up. My older brother had cancer and passed away at 22 while i was 15. He was always handsom and a wonderful person and never complained about the pain. But he did at times ask why i didn't come see him after his surgeries (which i did go to some) as well as him asking me to be around him but leave just how Mary was telling James. She and my brother hated how they looked sick and weak so they craved your warmth but didn't want you to remember them like that. The ending and what she says to him was so accurate to a cancer patient who knows they will die but also finds peace with it at times. Part of me resonates with James to some extent where you wish they could live in peace without pain wither that is in heaven or fully cured. Seeing someone you love be in pain but also not knowing how to help is so frustrating. James walking alone and facing all of silent hill, reflecting his past hits a spot in my heart, but also him ending with walking out of the cementary and taking the girl with him is such a good ending. Its not a "happy ending" but there is no happy ending for someone who lost their person. You just live on remembering them and trying your best to live a rightful life until its your turn.

Didn’t he say he was killing her not because she was suffering but because he was hating her? James is a very bad person.
@iroquoispliskin42623 ай бұрын
James didn't truly hate her. He did truly love Mary, and couldn't bear to see her in pain like that. A clue as to why this is true, is that Pyramid Head was a way for James to be punished for what he had done. But only because he believed he deserved the punishment. Is James a great, amazing human being? No. Is he truly a bad person, though? No.
@TKiY_Hastur3 ай бұрын
@@iroquoispliskin4262 If you listen to some of the dialogue, you hear her ask him to, because he's suffering too. She knew the doctors were prolonging her life/suffering for money, and saw how it was also killing james internally. I also resonated a lot with this story, taking care of a dying family member and hospice keeping them alive for more money, and as bad as it sounds I did hate it due to how hard it was and often woke up hoping it was the last day. It's something a lot of people go through when in that situation, not because they hate the person but out of a mix of love for them and anger at a situation they cant fix or control. If it makes me a bad person for feeling that way then so be it, but it's a situation you can't really judge until you experience it yourself. Yes he says he did it because he hated her HOWEVER if you listen to what he says he says he wanted his life back bit she immediately asks why he looks sad if its true. It implies that the life he wants back is the one with her but knows he cant have that, so he did what she asked him to and helped her end it.

1:16:56 Walter Sullivan. The antagonist of Silent Hill 4: The Room. Backstory: his father accidentally got Walter's birth mother pregnant and, not wanting to have a baby, abandoned him in room 302 of South Ashfield Heights before he got sent to St. Jerome Hospital by the superintendent, Jim's father Frank Sunderland, who also kept the umbilical cord as he felt its too precious to throw out. Walter then became a ward of the Wish House orphanage, located in a forest near Silent Hill and forced to be part of the cult. Walter, at age 6, was told his mother was "asleep" and where she was but misinterpreted it and believed Room 302 as his "mother" and visited each week but had problems. When he became an adult while having faced a lot of problems growing up, he believed that doing the "21 Sacraments" would help "awaken" his "mother" so they can be reunited by killing 10 of 21 people, marking them as 01121-10121, before killing himself at age 24 and marking on his feet 11121 and has been killing as a ghost for 10 years, marking his victims 12121-15121 all before the events of Silent Hill 4: The Room.

I love how they changed the final parts of Eddie's story. Instead of the two worst boss fights, he got a really cool stealthy boss fight. And him talking face-to-face with James during his monologue is a really nice twist on things. Considering James also punches Eddie, it makes the fact that Eddie probably sees the bully he shot instead of James most of the time more apparent. Do kinda miss the "a human being..." line from James, but I can see that that line might come off kinda weird with the drastically different voice acting

The most disturbing thing about the abstract daddy, is the fact that it's a bed with a person laying ontop of another person while covered in bedsheets... Edit: What's even more tragic and disgusting in the original, is that the walls of the room Angela was in, were covered in holes with pistons moving in and out of them. I've heard a theory that the amount of holes was the amount of times...

God, they managed to make Abstract Daddy EVEN WORSE in the remake... I am so uncomfortable with it. Good job, developers. EDIT: the looping hallways it's much worse than just a room with the pistons, because gives that desperation of running and running but never being capable of truly escape. Her nook between the walls makes it even sadder. Also, it's even worse that James instantly turns things around and makes it about him. She is having a breakdown and all he cares about is that she is defensive towards him. Instead of sympathizing with her, all he wanted was to clarify that HE isn't like her father. Shows how his mind works regarding his selfishness. Angela gets that immediately when he says "my Mary".

I find it kinda funny how James did not even question what the hell is going on, not even once. Like everything was supposed to be, like it was normal, it just like that. Any normal person would immediately knows something is not right when you meet the girl that was stabbed a few hours ago, all kickin, alive and well. And here James just being James and did not call the bullshit at all. Another example is him casually sticking his hand in the wall hole and jump into the abyss without trying to find another solution. It's like he simultaneously know and doesn't know about Silent Hill. Maybe the whole looping thing is right. It's like you replaying Skyrim again and force your own brain to forget certain things so you can have that first time feeling again.

I think people who go to Silent Hill are all incredibly lost in their own head, we see that with all the characters in this game, aside from Laura who is just a child and doesn't understand Mary is dead. So James is so lost that he kinda ignores or doesn't realize things are way too weird to be real, until he realizes it by the end, but things still interact with him so he has to defend himself
@xav73113 ай бұрын
Maybe when you're in silent hill things just "make sense" you instinctively know what to do and how to do things, there's even some text in the games indicating that you can't deviate from what the "town wants", some things that should work just doesn't work until you do it "the right way", like it's all a convoluted plot (or like a dream, where things just happen or don't work how they should work)

I think the reason why dead Maria doesn't have the stab wound is because she actually died in the bed James left her to in the hospital, hence why we find the body in another hospital bed. And then, much later, she's stabbed and taken away. I think Maria and her lifespan throughout the game is all a mirror of Mary, where James perceives her death as the one in the hospital bed, not what happened thereafter.

Potential Spoilers Ahead: Correct me if I'm wrong about anything here but, as for Eddie, he was relentlessly bullied for his weight and appearance to the point that he went to one of the bullies houses and shot his dog. When said bully tried to confront him he shot him in the leg, but didn't kill him. Eddie fleeing from the police is what lead him to Silent Hill. The closest comparison you can kind of give to Eddie is Gomer Pyle from Full Metal Jacket, just bullied to the point of psychopathy. As for Angela, its heavily implied that her father, as well as her brother on occasion, physically and sexually abused her. Her mother never did anything to stop it, which eventually lead to Angela taking her fathers life by stabbing him several times with a knife. She also killed her brother by means unknown, but its theorized that she killed him by trapping him in the house and setting it on fire, hence her always seeing fire. Its been stated my Masahiro Ito himself that Angela also died by the end of the game, but we don't currently know how, (I assume by taking her own life.) Its also never stated what happened to her mother, though its also theorized that she fled and took her own life unbeknownst to Angela, which is why she's desperately trying to find her. Two very sad and tragic stories, but there is a stark difference between the two, being that Angela killed out of pure defense and in an act of trying to escape a seemingly unescapable situation, and Eddie killed an innocent defenseless dog, as well as crippled a kid potentially for life. Even though Eddie didn't deserve to be bullied, he committed an evil act, which is why most people find it hard to feel any sympathy for him like they do Angela. As for your questions about Laura, she was in the hospital with Mary getting treatment for unknown reasons, and they became very close. Mary actually wanted to adopt her as she was an orphan, but she was close to death by that point, and was unable to do so. James didn't actually kill Mary 3 years ago, in fact it was only about 3 days prior to the start of the game. This is further proven by the fact that Mary's body is in the back seat of James's car covered with a blanket (you can see it by noclipping). James leaving with Laura at the end of the "Leave" ending, is basically him leaving with only part of Mary that was left, as well as fulfilling Mary's desire to adopt Laura. She's not a ghost as far as I'm aware. Its kind of a shame that most people don't consider Leave to be the canon ending, as its the most satisfying in my opinion. Most consider the depressing "In Water" ending to be canon, and Bloober further hinted at that being the fact by not having James respond to Angela when she asks if he plans to use the knife on himself. It goes even further when James' father in Silent Hill 4 says that his son went to Silent Hill and never returned. Also i love the time loop theory for James. Its always kind of been a thing since the original game but it feels like the remake is leaning into it much more especially with the UFO ending. This is all off the top of the dome so I wont be surprised if some of this information isn't 100% accurate, just let me know if any of it needs corrected.

I can't fully hate Eddie even though he did kill an innocent dog. He could've been severely bullied to the point where his whole life is miserable.
@linkparadox7773 ай бұрын
As far as I'm aware, all of what you've said is accurate for each (as far as popular theories go anyways). Another thing to note is that the first time you meet Eddie, there's a bunch of football stuff around the apartment, implying that his bully is a jock, and in shooting his bully's leg Eddie ruined the bully's future prospects, hence he says he cried more than the dog. Also, as Jack noticed, the hunks of meat in Eddie's boss arena don't actually really resemble any animal, as it's Eddie's perception of himself from the relentless bullying he's been subject to. I also think that the Leave ending is a very fitting cannon ending, as it means that the three people we see tormented by silent hill end up dealing with confronting their trauma in different ways: Eddie goes off the deep end, Angela sees no other way out, and James resolves his trauma and is able to move on.
@darlenebuck4313 ай бұрын
in a not complete way I kind of felt bad for Eddie for being bullied for being called "fat" and "ugly" I went through that in middle school and I've been self-conscious about my weight and looks my whole life but what Eddie did was wrong too about harming an innocent animal. I've never snapped at anyone I just lock myself up and cry my eyes out.
@iybsky33313 ай бұрын
@@linkparadox777 yeah the original is a bit less subtle some things with Eddie imo, like him saying something like, "he wont be playing football on that leg anymore" and also all the meat in the room looking like they have pants on and just sort of obviously resembling Eddie. If there's anything about remake Eddie, it feels like they made him feel more disgusting and unlikable way earlier on than the original. Like in my first playthrough of the original I didn't really suspect anything of him until towards the end. And yeah Leave is perfect to me. In Water just doesn't feel like a satisfying conclusion to the game after all that James and the player went through. Its a shame that its so obviously teased that its the canon ending though.
